MISSION SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 What can Martin Luther and Lutheran theology offer the current tensions in the world especially as we see them developing with ISIS, and in China, as well as America? On Sunday, September 21, at the 8:30 worship service, Martin Luther will tell the story of how his life was transformed. As a man plagued with doubt, despair, and depression, Luther was constantly looking for something to relieve his inner anxiety. The answer he received changed him and western civilization. In the 10:30 service, Pastor Johan Hinderlie will proclaim this same reality of Christ that is still changing lives through the gospel. His message will illustrate how efforts to control this message in various parts of the world cannot succeed as long as one element of the Christian life is functioning well. But if that element is missing, then the outcome for church and society could be similar to what happened in Germany under the Nazis. Pastor Johan Hinderlie has been portraying the life of Martin Luther since 1979. His love for Luther s insights into the Bible and the message of the gospel have affected his preaching, his marriage, and his prayer life. Johan served for 28 years as the director of Mount Carmel Family Camp in Alexandria. There he had the privilege of welcoming international students from many parts of the world but especially from China. His understanding of the problems facing China comes from those conversations. His additional work with China Service Ventures, which is serving the poor in the Henan Province of China, have enlarged that understanding. In addition to its ministry to the poor, China Service Ventures is bringing opportunities for the gospel message to find a hearing in many of its ventures, especially among college students who serve in its summer camping ministry. Johan is married to Sonja. They live in Minneapolis and have three adult sons and three granddaughters.
