To appropriate the new life that is beyond the power of death means we must die with Christ who was raised for us. To live for Christ, we must die with him. New life requires a daily surrendering of the old life, letting go of the present order, so that we may embrace the new humanity. I die every day! asserts Paul (1 Corinthians 15:31). Resurrection necessitates death as a preceding act. The church s peculiar Lenten claim is that in dying we live, that all who are baptized into Christ are baptized into his death. To be raised with Christ means one must also die with Christ. In order to embrace the resurrection, we must experience the passion of Jesus. The way of the cross, the way to Easter, is through death of the old self. In dying, we live. Therefore, at the beginning of Lent, we are reminded that our possessions, our rulers, our empires, our projects, our families and even our lives do not last forever. You are dust, and to dust you shall return (Genesis 3:19). The liturgies throughout Lent try to pry loose our fingers, one by one, from presumed securities and plunge us into unknown baptismal waters, waters that turn out to be not only our death tomb but surprisingly our womb of life. Rather than falling back into nothingness, we fall back on everlasting arms. Death? How can we fear what we have already undergone in baptism? Page 2 The Carillion (continued from page 1) It is the power of the resurrection on the horizon ahead that draws us into repentance toward the cross and tomb. Through the intervention of God s gracious resurrection, lifelong changes in our values and behavior become possible. By turning from the end of the old self in us, Lenten repentance makes it possible for us to affirm joyfully, Death is no more! and to aim toward the landscape of the new age. Faithfully adhering to the Lenten journey of prayer, fasting and almsgiving leads to the destination of Easter. During the final week, Holy Week, we hear the fullness of Christ s passion, his death, and resurrection. From Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem and on to the Triduum (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday), all of Holy Week focuses on the passion. As his followers, we travel Christ s path of servanthood through the Lord s Supper and the suffering of the cross toward the glory of Easter, all of which underscores the inseparable link between the death and resurrection of Jesus. Ash Wednesday Worship Service Ash Wednesday Worship Service at Saron/1st will be at 12 noon on February 14th. Come and get your ashes, prepare our hearts for the beginning of Lent, and praise God together! For an evening service in town Amazing Grace Lutheran Church in Aberdeen is having a 7PM Worship Service. Church Council We merged the Saron Church Council and 1st Presbyterian Board together into one leadership council this past December. Firstly, a BIG THANK YOU for your service these past years to Marilynn Anderson, Nola Bell, Tom Ozwarski, Tim Pelan, and Diana Petrich. And Carole Sandstrom will be and is deeply missed from council. Thank you to Sue Swantek and Sharal Whitecliff for volunteering to serve on council. Also thank you to Myka Wayman for being willing to serve as youth representative. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3:17

Page 5 A 40 Day Lent Journey The One Word Devotional Lent is the time from Ash Wednesday to Holy Week, when we enter into a spiritual journey with Jesus. It is a time of reflection and contemplation of our relationship with God, how we are called to be disciples, and Christ s ministry. I invite all of you to be part of this journey with me with prayer and reflection of scripture. Each day there is a scripture to be read and a word from scripture to reflect on. As you read the scripture and reflect on the word, ask yourself the following questions: How does the scripture connect with me today? What is God saying to me here? What is God up to? Jesus is the Word spoken and made flesh (John 1), so how does God s word speak to you? One word can call us to change, to hope, to love, and one word can change the world. -Pastor Michelle de Beauchamp Day 1 2/14 Day 2 2/15 Day 3 2/16 Day 4 2/17 Day 5 2/18 FAST LIGHT SHAME SIN COVENANT Matthew 6:16-21 1 John 1:3-10 Psalm 25 Psalm 32 Genesis 9:8-17 Day 6 2/19 Day 7 2/20 Day 8 2/21 Day 9 2/22 Day 10 2/23 GRACE LOVE WEARY FAITH REMEMBER Ephesians 2:1-10 1 Peter 3:8-18 Proverbs 30:1-9 Romans 3:21-31 Psalm 22:23-31 Day 11 2/24 Day 12 2/25 Day 13 2/26 Day 14 2/27 Day 15 2/28 SEES LIFE COVENANT LONGING FEAR Genesis 16:7-15 Mark 8:31-38 Psalm 105:1-11 Hebrews 11:13-19 John 12:36-43 Day 16 3/1 Day 17 3/2 Day 18 3/3 Day 19 3/4 Day 20 3/5 WORDS PRECIOUS MOUNTAIN TEMPLE FOUNDATION Psalm 19:1-9 Psalm 19:10-14 Mark 9:2-8 John 2:13-22 1 Corin. 3:10-23 Day 21 3/6 Day 22 3/7 Day 23 3/8 Day 24 3/9 Day 25 3/10 BLESSED TEMPLE SIGN TIME BORN Psalm 84 Ezra 6:1-16 Genesis 9:8-17 Daniel 12:5-13 John 3:1-13 Day 26 3/11 Day 27 3/12 Day 28 3/13 Day 29 3/14 Day 30 3/15 LIGHT DESERT CHAINS SUN REST John 3:14-21 Psalm 107:1-16 Psalm 107:1-16 Isaiah 60:15-22 Hebrews 4:1-13 Day 31 3/16 Day 32 3/17 Day 33 3/18 Day 34 3/19 Day 35 3/20 CREATE WRATH LIFE WITNESSES WONDERS Psalm 51 Habakkuk 3:2-13 John 12:20-33 Isaiah 43:8-13 Acts 2:14-24 Day 36 3/21 Day 37 3/22 Day 38 3/23 Day 40 3/24 Holy Week BELIEVE SERVANT GRUMBLING RESTORE Begins..
