November Services and Music Music for Remembrance Over November we will be marking this particularly poignant Remembrance-tide with some very moving music indeed. On Saturday 10 November at 19.30, Benjamin Britten s War Requiem will be performed in the Cathedral by Salisbury Musical Society, Chelsea Opera Group and our own choristers. The work was completed in 1962 and first performed for the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral, which was built following the destruction of the fourteenth-century cathedral during a World War II bombing raid. The following day, Remembrance Sunday, we will keep the Act of Remembrance at the 10.30 Eucharist; music will include Douglas Guest s famous For the fallen, and Mark Blatchly s equally fine setting of these words. At Evensong (16.30), our organ scholar Alex Palotai will play the Elegy by George Thalben-Ball, which has become strongly associated with Remembrance-tide. On Tuesday 13 November at Evensong (17.30), the boys and lay vicars will sing John Ireland s affecting cantata-anthem Greater love hath no man. Alongside these musical works for Remembrance, the Cathedral Chamber Choir will be singing Gabriel Fauré s Requiem for All Souls Day on Friday 2 November.
