Munera: Teach, Govern, and Sanctify Laudetur Iesus Christus! Never mind Christmas coming quickly, 2019 is just around the corner! Although the New Year is here we are still in the middle of our Christmas Octave. We celebrate Christmas for eight days, December 25 January 1, makes the octave. The Christmas Octave is interesting in that several saints have their feast day as part of the structure of the eight days. St. Stephen, December 26 th : the day after the joys of Christmas the Church asks us to think about the saint who first died for his bold proclamation of faith in Jesus. As in the past we, as believers, will do again in the year ahead profess Jesus as Lord! We are reminded that a life of faith is not always so joyful here on earth. St. John, December 27 th : the only apostle not to be martyred, although legend says an attack was made on the youngest apostle. Just as in the past and in the year ahead we will listen to the Word of God and believe. There is an old custom of blessing wine on St. John s Day as a remedy for good health and liberation from the evil one. The Holy innocents, December 28 th : these small boys, under the age of three, were killed in hopes of the Christ Child being killed. As in the past, we continue forward being men and women who respect LIFE at all ages and stages. St. Thomas Becket, December 29 th : this saintly bishop had to turn against his friend and king because his king turned away from our Lord s Church. May this saint help us in all the new hard choices we will have to make in the future? The old title for New Year s Eve is Sylvester after the saint whose feast day is celebrated on December 31 st. Sylvester was a saintly bishop and pope. For over 2000 years we have been united around St. Peter and his successor may we continue to pray for the Holy Father in the New Year? January 1 st is the Feast of the Circumcision, and Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God. Let s just say it s a good thing to start the New Year off with Mass and turn to the Name that Saves and His Mother. And so, a New Year is around the corner but, really the same challenges and opportunities for blessings is given to us again. May 2019 for all of you be a true year of grace and deep faith in all that will make-up the year ahead. God Grant you Many Happy Years! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you, Rev. Fr. Stephen A. Saffron
