10 Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 3 The Secretary s Memo Pad Ill. William F. Rook, 33º The Happiest of the Holiday Season to all! In November we welcomed all our new Knights Commanders of the Court of Honor. This month we are highlighting the five men who were elevated to the rank and distinction of Inspector General Honorary. Find their bios in his edition of the Bulletin. A quick reminder, that dues are due and payable now. As I mentioned before there are some modification concerning payments of dues. You may pay dues online at www. scottishrite.org; you may submit your credit card payment on the dues notice and send it back to us. And of course we accept the old fashion check or money system. But please pay your dues. It is the only support for the Lodge of Perfection. Dues cards are plastic this year and are to be your permanent dues card with annual sticker updates in future years. But now, if you lose you dues card and desire a replacement, it will now cost you $5. Not our office charge but Supreme Council s charge. Please note that Life Membership cards are gold color, all the others are silver. So think about upgrading to gold. Remember on Saturday, December 14 at 2 pm is the annual Lodge of Perfection Children Christmas Party. There will be entertainment, food and of course Santa. We welcome your family to attend. If you wish Santa to present a gift to our child, please bring a wrapped gift and give it to one of Santa s helpers and he will presented to the child. And finally, to all, a wish for a wonderful holiday season and even a better New Year. Rees W. Padfield, 32 KSA Commander Council of Kadosh Brethren, we are now the approaching the time of the joyous season of Thanksgiving and the holidays that follow. As we prepare in own way to celebrate let us always remember the men and women of our armed forces, whither so ever they are stationed around the globe and give them thanks and pray for their safe return. Without their sacrifice and that of their families we would not have the freedoms that we now enjoy. I know we were all disappointed in not conferring our degrees and watching the Spirit of Hiram. The Cathedral Board is diligently working to fix the ceiling problem. They are in the process of receiving cost estimates for several options of correcting the problems. By the December Stated Meeting we should know what is going to be done if it has not already been started. Please have patience. Remember that we are meeting in the classroom. It would be a great demonstration of interest in the Scottish Rite if we filled the classroom as well as the dining room. Our attendance can always be better, and to encourage attendance, we will have a small Jazz band for entertainment during dinner. The meetings are more than just paying the bills and going home. The meeting and talking with old and new found friends on the level is part of what makes Masonry so special. As we start our meetings we call on the tiler to insure that the meeting place is secure from cowands and eavesdroppers. The word tiler is derived from those less skilled in stone masonry. Their duty was to lay flat tiles on the roof and that gave them the advantage of height to look out for strangers during any lodge (or group of stonemasons) that may be meeting in the building. Today they act as our sentinels. The Council of Kadosh is responsible for recalling the deaths of martyrs and inculcates the principles of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. It also maintains the necessity of law and order.

Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 4 Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 9 The P.R. s Corner Ill. Michael J. Bess, 33º IN MEMORIAM Here s hoping you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving, or the first day of Hanukkah, as many celebrants dubbed it Thanksgivukkah. Whatever your faith, I hope you and yours have a most joyful Holiday Season. If you have small ones or Grandchildren, plan on attending the Childhood Language Center s annual Christmas Party which will be held on December 14th between 3:00 and 5:30 P.M. in the dining room. Bring the kids out and watch their eyes light up when they see Santa. Bring a gift for Santa to give to your little one, but be sure you print their name on the gift. I want to announce the appointment of Brother Miles Bresee, III, 32 o to round out the Cathedral Association Board of Directors. Brother Miles is a welcome addition to the board. Many of you have already heard we have had to shut down the use of the auditorium for some much need repairs. The closure has effected this year s Fall Reunion and the spring production of the Spirit of Hiram play resulting in the cancelation of both. Unfortunately it cannot be helped; the repairs must be made, and made properly. Hopefully, we will up and running for the Spring Reunion in the auditorium. If not, the Spring Reunion will be held in the dining room. It will a Reunion in the Round. Again, a Happy Holiday Season to each and every one of you, family and friends. Language Center Holiday Join Santa and his merry elves for a joyous party on Saturday, December 14, 2013, at 2:00 P.M. at the Pasadena Scottish Rite Cathedral dining hall. Parents with small children are encouraged to bring a wrapped toy (to give Santa a hand).

Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 8 Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 5 Knights of St. Andrew When I first arrived at the Pasadena Scottish Rite I was intrigued by the men wearing Scottish caps with silver badges. After hearing the explanation of who they were and what they did, I obtained an application. At the end of my initiation into the 32,and sheepishly asked Jim Hoerricks if he would sign it and, although this was 5 years ago, I still remember him saying, Don t make me regret this. Although I knew he was partially kidding I also knew he partially wasn t. By vouching for me he placed his faith and trust in me that day and gave me the opportunity to represent the Valley of Pasadena at the frontlines of service. It is with similar faith and trust that I now hand over the reigns of the Knights to our incoming officers. Although the color and style of my cap will be changing from black to red, I will always feel a strong connection to our chapter for it is where I spent my formative years as a Scottish Rite Mason. I know our Valley is in very capable hands, from our senior leadership and office staff, down through stagecraft, make-up and our Knights of St Andrew. It is with great pleasure that I announce the 2014 Officers of the venerable Pasadena Scottish Rite Knights of St Andrew. Please welcome, congratulate and support them in all their endeavours. Jim Hörricks is a mostly non-verbal yet highfunctioning autistic person who credits his path trough Freemasonry (and the many wonderful men with whom he s shared that pathway) for helping him find his own voice. When he is not working at one of his many jobs, or working on his dissertation, or at a Masonic function, he s at home on his ranch with his wife and five children, one of whom, like him, is a high-functioning autistic person. Utilizing the mimicing/voice-over talent that he learned as a child to get by in school, he enjoys reading stories with his children in their library... and making the stories come alive. Mr. Benn books are their current favorites. Herb Rohwer grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Salt Lake City, Utah and Southern California. He is married to the love of his life, Kathy, and has lived in the San Fernando Valley for the past 38 years. They have two children and four grandchildren. Herb has served the Pasadena Scottish Rite Valley as Class President, Knights of Saint Andrew, Stage Craft & Lights, and he currently serves as the Director of Stage Craft & Chairman of the Childhood Language Center Board of Directors. Herb will be installed as Venerable Master of the Lodge of Perfection in 2014. The white caps are worn by those who have been honored with the 33 Inspector General Honorary. The Thirty-third Degree is conferred by the Supreme Council upon members of the Rite in recognition of outstanding service to the Rite, or in public life, to the principles taught in the Degrees. The 33 cannot be asked for and if asked for must be refused. At its biennial session, the Supreme Council elects members of the Rite to receive the Degrees. These 33 Scottish Rite Masons are Inspectors General Honorary and honorary members of the Supreme Council. The active members of the Supreme Council are chosen from among them. A member must have previously been invested with the Rank and Decoration of Knight Commander of the Court of Honour, be a KCCH for at least four years and have attained the age of 35 years before he can be nominated for election to receive the 33.
