December 30, 2018 Fellowship Hall Service 9:30 and 11:00 a.m.
Order of Worship * Welcome and greetings Brian Salter, lead pastor * Call to worship taken from Psalm 33 Leader: Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him. For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. Leader: By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you. * Hymn of praise Our Great God Eternal God, unchanging, mysterious and unknown; your boundless love unfailing, in grace and mercy shown; bright seraphim in endless flight around your glorious throne, they raise their voices day and night in praise to you alone. Refrain: Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God! Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God! Lord, we are weak and frail, helpless in the storm; surround us with your angels, hold us in your arms; our cold and ruthless enemy, his pleasure is our harm, rise up, O Lord, and he will flee before our sovereign God. Refrain Let every creature in the sea and every flying bird; let every mountain, every field and valley of the earth; let all the moons and all the stars in all the universe sing praises to the living God, who rules them by his Word. Refrain text and music by Fernando Ortega and Mac Powell 2002 Word Music, LLC, ARR, ICS, UBP, CCLI Lic.#152036
* Prayer of adoration Affirmation of the necessity of Scripture Leader: The light of nature and the works of creation and providence manifest the goodness, wisdom, and power of God, to such an extent that men are without excuse. Yet the works of creation and providence are not sufficient to give a saving knowledge of God and of his will. Therefore it pleased the Lord, at various times and in different ways, to reveal himself and to declare his will to his church, and afterward to commit that revelation completely to the writing of Holy Scripture. Leader: Holy Scripture, the written Word of God, contains all the books of the Old and New Testament. The Old Testament books are: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, First and Second Samuel, First and Second Kings, First and Second Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, The Song of Songs, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi. Leader: The New Testament books are: The Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; The Acts of the Apostles; The Epistles of Paul: Romans, 1st and 2nd Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1st and 2nd Thessalonians, 1st and 2nd Timothy, Titus, and Philemon; The Epistle to the Hebrews, The Epistle of James, The 1st and 2nd Epistles of Peter, The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Epistles of John, The Epistle of Jude and The Revelation. All of the Bible is given by inspiration of God to be the rule of faith and life for all. based on the Westminster Confession of Faith, 1.1-1.2 Call to confession taken from Joel 2 and Proverbs 28 Even now, declares the Lord, return to me with all your heart. Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. The man who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
Prayer of confession taken from Psalm 51 Leader: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. Leader: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Hymn of confession Depth of Mercy Depth of mercy! Can there be mercy reaching even me? God the Just, his wrath forbears, me the chief of sinners spares. So many times my heart has strayed from his kind and perfect ways, making clear my desperate need for his blood poured out for me. Give me grace, Lord, let me own all the wrongs that I have done. Let me now my sins deplore, look to you and sin no more. There, for me, the Savior stands holding forth his wounded hands, scars which ever cry for me; once condemned but now set free. text by Charles Wesley, 1740 Silent prayers of confession Assurance of God s pardoning grace taken from Titus 3 When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. * Hymn of assurance My Faith Has Found a Resting Place My faith has found a resting place, from guilt my soul is freed; I trust the ever living One, his wounds for me shall plead.
Refrain: I need no other argument, I need no other plea, it is enough that Jesus died, and that he died for me. Enough for me that Jesus saves, this ends my fear and doubt; a sinful soul I come to him, he ll never cast me out. Refrain My heart is leaning on the Word, the written Word of God: salvation by my Savior s name, salvation thro his blood. Refrain My great Physician heals the sick, the lost he came to save; for me his precious blood he shed, for me his life he gave. Refrain text by Lidie Edmunds, 1891 Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory hymn May the Mind of Christ My Savior May the mind of Christ my Savior live in me from day to day, by his love and power controlling all I do and all I say. may the word of God dwell richly in my heart from hour to hour, so that all may see I triumph only through his power. May the peace of God my Father rule my life in everything, that I may be calm to comfort sick and sorrowing. May the love of Jesus fill me as the waters fill the sea, him exalting self abasing this is victory. May I run the race before me, strong and brave to face the foe, looking only unto Jesus as I onward go. May his beauty rest upon me as I seek the lost to win, and may they forget the channel, seeing only him. text by Kate Wilkinson, 1925; music by D. * Hymn of response O Great God * Benediction * Doxology * Postlude O great God of highest heav n occupy my lowly heart. Own it all and reign supreme. Conquer every rebel power. Let no vice or sin remain that resists your holy war. You have loved and purchased me, make me yours forevermore. I was blinded by my sin, had no ears to hear your voice, did not know your love within, had no taste for heaven s joys. Then your Spirit gave me life, opened up your Word to me through the Gospel of your Son, gave me endless hope and peace. Help me now to live a life that s dependent on your grace. Keep my heart and guard my soul from the evils that I face. You are worthy to be praised with my every thought and deed. O great God of highest heav n glorify your name through me. text by Bob Kauflin 2006 Sovereign Grace Praise, EMI Christian Music Publishing,ARR, ICS, UBP, CCLI Lic. #152036 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Proverbs 4:20-5:6 20 My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. 21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; 22 for they are life to those who find them and health to a man s whole body. 23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. 24 Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. 25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. 26 Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. 27 Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil. 1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom, listen well to my words of insight, 2 that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. 3 For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; 4 but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. 5 Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. 6 She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths are crooked, but she knows it not. NEW SERMON SERIES: SCRIPTURE ALONE John Frame insightfully claims, The issue before the world today, as in the garden of Eden, is Has God said? As followers of Jesus, the good news is that we are not left in the dark concerning what God has said. We have his revealed Word, the Bible. But do we know what God says in his Word? Do we live in diligent dependence upon God s Word? Are we listening to God through the faithful reading, meditating, memorizing, and applying of God s Word to all of our life? The Westminster Shorter Catechism question 2 asks, What rule hath God given to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him? The answer is, The Word of God, which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him. Are we ruled by his only rule to guide us, the Word of God? As we begin the new year, we desire to commit afresh to the study of and submission to God s revelation in the Scripture. Along with this January sermon series, we are making available a Community Bible Reading Plan Journal as well as a very accessible resource entitled Know How We Got our Bible. Let us renew our commitment to the authority and necessity of God s Word as we begin 2019.
