----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------- Order of Worship June 3, 2018 Reflection How could the blood of bulls and goats really deal with sin? The animals themselves were not volunteering for this slaughter; they were dragged to the altar by their owners. The animals lost their lives, but they were scarcely willing victims. So far as willingness went, it was the people who owned the sacrificed animals who were losing something. Of course, this sacrificial system was appointed by God himself. He taught thereby that sin demands death and in the sweep of the Bible s storyline, that a better lamb would be needed. The sins of the people were thus covered over until such a sacrifice should appear. But the blood and ashes of animals provided no final answer. - Don Carson Prelude As worship begins, please silence your electronic devices. Call To Worship 8 Psalm 1

Leader: O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! People: You have set your glory above the heavens. Leader: Through the praise of children and infants, you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. People: O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Song 10,000 Reasons Chorus: Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul; Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul; I'll worship Your holy name. The sun comes up, it's a new day dawning, It's time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me, Let me be singing when the evening comes. (Chorus) You're rich in love and You're slow to anger. Your name is great and Your heart is kind. For all Your goodness, I will keep on singing; Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. (Chorus) And on that day, when my strength is failing, The end draws near, and my time has come; 2

Still, my soul will sing Your praise unending Ten thousand years, and then forevermore! (Chorus) Worship Your holy name; worship Your holy name. Prayer of Invocation O gracious and holy God, give us diligence to seek you, wisdom to perceive you, and patience to wait for you. Grant us, O God, a mind to meditate on you, eyes to behold you, ears to listen to your word, a heart to love you, a life to proclaim you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Affirmation of Faith Colossians 1:15-20 Minister: Who is Jesus, the Christ? All: We believe Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and 3

through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, And to the Son, And to the Holy Ghost! As it was in the beginning, Is now and ever shall be: World without end, Amen, Amen! Prayer of Confession Almighty God, to know you is the fulfillment of our deepest longings and the satisfaction of our most ardent desires. Yet foolishly we have sought our pleasures elsewhere. We have put the seeking of idols, which are bound to leave us feeling empty, above seeking you. We have failed to love you with our whole heart, soul, and mind. We have failed to love our neighbors as ourselves. Forgive us for our sins for the sake of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. And grant that from now on we might serve you in newness of life. Amen. Private Confession 4

Song Hide Away in the Love of Jesus Come weary saints, though tired and weak; Hide away in the love of Jesus. Your strength will return by His quiet streams, Hide away in the love of Jesus. Come wand'ring souls and find your home, Hide away in the love of Jesus. He offers the rest that you yearn to know, Hide away in the love of Jesus. Chorus: Hear Him calling your name; See the depths of His love In the wounds of His grace. Hide away. Come guilty ones weighed down with sin, Hide away in the love of Jesus. The freedom you long for is found in Him, Hide away in the love of Jesus. (Chorus) Come hopeless hearts do not despair, Hide away in the love of Jesus. For ten thousand joys await you there, 5

Hide away in the love of Jesus. (Chorus) Hide away; hide away in the love of Jesus. Words of Pardon and Comfort 2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Song Satisfied All my life long I had panted For a drink from some cool spring That I hoped would quench the burning Of the thirst I felt within. Chorus: Hallelujah! He has found me, The One my soul so long has craved! Jesus satisfies all my longings Through His blood I now am saved. Feeding on the filth around me Til my strength was almost gone. Longed my soul for something better Only still to hunger on. (Chorus) Poor I was and sought for riches Something that would satisfy. 6

But the dust I gathered 'round me Only mocked my soul's sad cry. (Chorus) Well of water ever springing Bread of life so rich and free. Untold wealth that never faileth, My Redeemer is to me. (Chorus) (Children through Kindergarten are dismissed for Children s Church; they will return for Communion.) Prayer of Intercession (Concluded by the Lord s Prayer) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. High Desert Highlights See Announcements on page 17 Offertory Scripture Hebrews 9:1-28 9 Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly place of holiness. 2 For a tent was prepared, 7

the first section, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence. It is called the Holy Place. 3 Behind the second curtain was a second section called the Most Holy Place, 4 having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's staff that budded, and the tablets of the covenant. 5 Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. 6 These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties, 7 but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people. 8 By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing 9 (which is symbolic for the present age). According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, 10 but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation. 11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more 8

perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. 15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. 16 For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. 17 For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive. 18 Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. 19 For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you. 21 And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all 9

the vessels used in worship. 22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. 23 Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, 26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. Sermon: Dan Rose The Perfect Sacrifice Rev. 10

Song: Blood What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus; What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. Nothing But The Chorus: Oh! Precious is the flow That makes me white as snow; No other fount I know, Nothing but the blood of Jesus. For my pardon, this I see, Nothing but the blood of Jesus; For my cleansing, this my plea, Nothing but the blood of Jesus. (chorus) Nothing can for sin atone, Nothing but the blood of Jesus Naught of good that I have done, Nothing but the blood of Jesus. (chorus) This is all my hope and peace, Nothing but the blood of Jesus; This is all my righteousness, Nothing but the blood of Jesus. (chorus) Celebration of the Lord s Supper 11

This is a time for all people to seek the Lord. For Christians, the Lord s Supper (also called Communion or The Eucharist, which means thanksgiving ) is a time to meet with their Savior by faith, to be strengthened and renewed by Him as they eat the bread and drink the elements. All baptized Christians who trust in Christ alone as their Savior and Lord, belong to a church that embraces the gospel, are at peace with their fellow neighbor, and seek strength and grace to live more faithfully to Christ, are invited to participate. If you are not a Christian, or if you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer (see Prayers on page 16) and to consider more deeply your relationship to Jesus Christ. We also ask that children who have not yet publicly professed their faith in Christ refrain from partaking until doing so. Both wine (red) and grape juice (white) are offered in each serving tray. Words of Institution Memorial Acclamation Minister: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of the faith: All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again! Minister: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. All: Therefore let us keep the feast. 12

Minister: The gifts of God for the people of God. Communion Song There is a Fountain There is a fountain filled with blood, Drawn from Immanuel s veins; And sinners, plunged beneath that flood, Lose all their guilty stains: Lose all their guilty stains, lose all their guilty stains; And sinners, plunged beneath that flood, Lose all their guilty stains. The dying thief rejoiced to see That fountain in his day; And there have I, as vile as he, Washed all my sins away: Washed all my sins away, washed all my sins away; And there have I, as vile as he, Washed all my sins away. E er since by faith I saw the stream Your flowing wounds supply, Redeeming love has been my theme, And shall be till I die: And shall be till I die, and shall be till I die; Redeeming love has been my theme, And shall be till I die. 13

Dear dying Lamb, your precious blood Shall never lose its pow r, Till all the ransomed church of God Be saved to sin no more: Be saved to sin no more, be saved to sin no more; Till all the ransomed church of God Be saved to sin no more. Prayer of Thanksgiving We thank you, O God, that through Word and sacrament you have given us your Son, who is the true bread from heaven and food of eternal life. Strengthen us in your service that our daily living may show our thanks, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Song Before the Throne Before the throne of God above I have a strong and perfect plea; A great High Priest whose name is love, Whoever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on His hands; My name is written on His heart. I know that while in heav'n He stands, No tongue can bid me thence depart, No tongue can bid me thence depart. When Satan tempts me to despair 14

And tells me of the guilt within, Upward I look and see Him there Who made an end of all my sin. Because the sinless Savior died, My sinful soul is counted free. For God the Just is satisfied To look on Him and pardon me, To look on Him and pardon me. Benediction Postlude Behold Him there the risen Lamb, My perfect, spotless, righteousness. The great unchangeable I Am, The King of Glory and of grace. One with Himself; I cannot die, My soul is purchased by His blood. My life is hid with Christ on high, With Christ my Savior and my God, With Christ my Savior and my God. 15

All songs used by permission. CCLI License #11101021 Prayers Prayer for Those Searching for Truth: Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen. Prayer of Belief: Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the 16

dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin: Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the Pioneer and Perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment: Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen. Announcements Next Sunday we will gather for worship at 10am at DRMS.
