Hebrews Hebrews 13:20-21 Words of Wisdom - Part 7 June 6, 2010 I. Words of Wisdom A. Hebrews 13:20-21...Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, [21] equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. B. Prayer II. Words of Wisdom The God of Peace Makes Peace and Brings Peace A. Biblical Benedictions A benediction is a prayer seeking God s blessing and protection on those being prayed for. In our day, benedictions are often part of a religious ceremony and most often come at the end of the ceremony as the last prayer given before departing. 1. Numbers 6:24-26... The Lord bless you, and keep you; [25] the Lord make His face shine on you, and be gracious to you; [26] the Lord lift up His countenance on you, and give you peace. 2. Romans 15:13... Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. 3. I Timothy 1:17... Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. 4. Amen. 5. Jude 1:24-25... Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, [25] to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. B. Our benediction today begins with Now the God of peace 1. This phrase, The God of Peace is used seven times in the New Testament six other places besides here in Hebrews 13.

a. Romans 15:33... Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen. b. Romans 16:17-20... The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you. c. II Corinthians 13:11... Finally, brethren, rejoice, be made complete, be comforted, be like-minded, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. d. Philippians 4:2-9... I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to live in harmony in the Lord. [3] Indeed, true companion, I ask you also to help these women who have shared my struggle in the cause of the gospel, together with Clement also and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life. [4] Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! [5] Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. [6] Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. [7] And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. [8] Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. [9] The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. e. I Thessalonians 5:23... Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. f. II Thessalonians 3:14-16... If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of that person and do not associate with him, so that he will be put to shame. [15] Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother. [16] Now may the Lord of peace Himself continually grant you peace in every circumstance. The Lord be with you all! 2. As the God of peace, He willingly paid a dear price to reconcile once rebellious sinners who repent and trust in Christ to Himself.

a. Colossians 1:19-20... For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, [20] and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. b. Romans 5:1-2... Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, [2] through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. 3. As the God of peace, He proclaimed through Isaiah and the angels who spoke to the shepherds of Christ s birth that Jesus would be the author of peace on earth among those who live a life pleasing to God. a. Isaiah 9:6-7... For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. [7] There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this. b. Luke 2:13-14... And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, [14] "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased." 4. As the God of peace, He is the source of inner peace for all who trust Him to be their provider, protector or all in all. a. Romans 8:5-8... For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. [6] For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, [7] because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, [8] and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. b. Psalms 119:165... Those who love Your law have great peace, and nothing causes them to stumble.

c. Isaiah 26:3-4... The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, because he trusts in You. [4] Trust in the Lord forever, for in God the Lord, we have an everlasting Rock. d. Philippians 4:6-7... Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. [7] And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. e. John 14:27... Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. 5. As the God of peace, He makes it clear that His kind of peace either prevents or resolves conflict. a. James 4:1-3, 7-10... What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? [2] You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. [3] You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. [7] Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. [8] Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. [9] Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. [10] Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you. b. Luke 19:41-44... When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it, [42] saying, "If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. [43] "For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, [44] and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation." c. Matthew 10:32-39... "Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. [33] "But whoever denies Me before men, I will also

deny him before My Father who is in heaven. [34] "Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. [35] "For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; [36] and a man's enemies will be the members of his household. [37] "He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. [38] "And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. [39] "He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it. 6. As the God of peace, He is the source of peace in the church. a. I Corinthians 14:31-33... For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted; [32] and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; [33] for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. b. Ephesians 4:1-3... Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, [2] with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, [3] being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. c. Romans 12:10-11, 16-18... Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; [11] not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;[16] Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. [17] Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. [18] If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. III. Conclusion A. Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, [21] equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
