the newsletter of Community United Methodist Church Glorify God August 2014 SUNDAY MORNING DRAMA Due to the eight-o-clock first service, on Sunday mornings I have to hurriedly give the dog her morning walk. As I make her fast-step around the block I notice many of my neighbors going about a leisurely Sunday morning retriving their newspapers in their bathrobes, gardening, sitting out on their porches with their second cups of coffee. Yes, I sometimes envy them. They are using Sunday mornings to relax and play and they seem to be as happy and content as clams. So why do we take the time for worship and all the other church activities when it seems like most people these days get along perfectly well without the bother? Allow me to suggest an answer. We do it because at some point and to some degree we have responded to the invitation of Christ to come follow him. Encourage One Another Share Jesus Being a follower of Jesus requires a price. Author Flannery O Connor wrote: The truth does not change according o our ability to stomach it. The constant temptation for religious leaders of any age is to make religion palatable to their hearers; to make it over into something which conforms to the most recent opinion polls. We resent the flinty objectivity of truth. That s why the beginning of true spiritually is openness to whatever the Spirit of God has to say to us, even if it runs counter to our natural proclivities or cultural trends. In Isaiah 30: 15, 16 the prophet puts to us the only two choices we have; we can run toward or away from genuine spirituality. We have no other choice. By the way we conduct our lives we will do one or the other. For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength. But you were unwilling, and you said, No! We will flee upon horses ; therefore you shall flee away; and, We will ride upon swift steeds ; therefore your pursuers shall be swift. Peoples lives are not always what they seem. The film, Chariots of Fire, tells the story of two men, Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell. Both are great athletes who represent Great Britain in the 1926 Olympics. Abrahams competes out of an inner drivenness. He is deeply insecure. He has to prove something. It s all about him and his own self-validation. Liddell also competes to win. But he runs out of a sense of God s goodness. He is an utterly free man. He runs for the glory of God. Two men, two motives, two inner lives Liddell who is filled with the Spirit of God and Abrahams who is filled with the spirit of self. The genuine pursuit of spirituality opens our eyes to the reality behind the clever illusions we tend to construct for ourselves. There is great drama and incoherent longings just under the surface of any given bucolic Sunday morning when the sun is bright and the grass in green. We who are in the process of living in the light of truth feel compelled to pursue the call of God. His Spirit has taken hold of us and we move toward a destination which is a mystery but the outcome will be joy. Pastor Scott

A note of thanks all the way from Appleton! Carrie and I want to thank you wholeheartedly for the kind, generous and creative way of your goodbye to us. Thank you so much for the collection that you as a congregation have given us upon our leaving. It was good to have the time of bidding farewell on June 15 when I had my last Sunday with you. We cherish the memories of our 4 years with you as a congregation even Hans sparks up when he comes across some of your pictures in our house! Carrie, Hans and I have settled in at our new location in Appleton and are in the sweet process of getting to know a new community and church. We wish you all the very best for your future and ask for God s richest blessing for your journey as a church with Pastor Scott. Thank you again for all your loving kindness that you have shown not only at our good-bye but throughout the years we journeyed together. In Christ, Markus with Carrie and Hans We want to thank everyone for their kind expressions of sympathy in the loss of our husband, father and grandfather. Roy s passing was peaceful. God took him home without any suffering or pain. We praise God for that.. Thank you to Ron Tichy for the beautiful message at the memorial. Also to Shari Langusch and Adam Schweitzer for the beautiful music. Thank you Doug for your work in setting up the sound system. Also a big thank you to the women who prepared the lunch. It was delicious. And to Cindi Schweitzer and the Integrity Funeral Home staff for the attention to all the details. Many people have commented on the beautiful service and our fine church.
