Connected by Pastor Cara I have a confession sometimes when I am engaging with a devotional resource I simply skim the Scripture reference. You? It is tempting. We think we know what it says, O yeah, I know John 15. That s the one about the vine and the branches. True, it is. But I invite us all me too - to read it again; savor the promises and brace for the calling. I am the Real Vine and my Father is the Farmer. He cuts off every branch of me that doesn t bear grapes. And every branch that is grape-bearing he prunes back so it will bear even more. You are already pruned back by the message I have spoken. Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you. In the same way that a branch can t bear grapes by itself but only by being joined to the vine, you can t bear fruit unless you are joined with me. I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you re joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can t produce a thing. Anyone who separates from me is deadwood, gathered up and thrown on the bonfire. But if you make yourselves at home with me and my words are at home in you, you can be sure that whatever you ask will be listened to and acted upon. This is how my Father shows who he is when you produce grapes, when you mature as my disciples. I ve loved you the way my Father has loved me. Make yourselves at home in my love. If you keep my commands, you ll remain intimately at home in my love. That s what I ve done kept my Father s commands and made myself at home in his love. I ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I m no longer calling you servants because servants don t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I ve named you friends because I ve let you in on everything I ve heard from the Father. You didn t choose me, remember; I chose you, and put you in the world to bear fruit, fruit that won t spoil. As fruit bearers, whatever you ask the Father in relation to me, he gives you. But remember the root command: Love one another. ~~~John 15 the Message~~~ Connected in covenant with God in Christ (vine) and with one another (branches) for the sake of the life and fruit. For the next four years - in the UMC we call that a quadrennium - our East Ohio Conference will be inviting this passage of Scripture to work on us. Challenging us to live connected and live into God s call for each and all of us. I wonder how North Canton Faith can benefit from allowing this Word to shape us? I wonder how each of us might find ourselves bearing healthy and abundant fruit in our own lives and in the life of the beloved community as we remain connected to God in Christ and to one another? As you receive this wonder I invite you to allow it to: Find a resting place within your own divided self. Come to rest upon your most intimate and casual relationships, both. Reveal itself in both micro and macro engagements. Shape - Your financial life - The time you allot to particular activities - The use of God s giftedness through you to the world - The stories you tell Your church offers many opportunities this summer to renew your connection to the vine and the vine-grower. Take a look in the pages which follow.

As I work to give myself over to Jesus call to remember the root command to love one another and out of that rootedness to grow in my discipleship I find it a challenge and a comfort, both. I am praying for us all as we remain connected to the vine this summer. Pastor Cara One Service Sunday, July 2 The words service and worship are often used synonymously. As in, Which service do you attend? Or I went to the Christmas Candlelight service. Well, on Sunday, July 2 at 10 am, we will be worshiping at One Service. We will gather for song, prayer, and Communion and THEN we will be sent out with this benediction, The worship has ended and the service has begun. A variety of mission and ministry opportunities requiring a variety of gifts and skills will be available at Faith and in the community. Perhaps God is calling us to: Make the church hospitable for our Camp Read-A-Lot and Created By God kids and families. Pack lunches for the families of the North Hill neighborhood. Visit some of our home-bound members. Beautify the side of the highway or the corner of an intersection. Distribute necessity bags to our brothers and sisters in Canton and Akron who are food insecure and homeless. Come to One Service on Sunday, July 2 at 10 am. Join the Welcoming the Stranger Ministry Group in packing lunches for the families of the North Hill neighborhood in Akron. Each Sunday beginning June 18 through the July 23 we will have Sun-butter sandwich-making stations in the Gathering Area and the Family Life Center. Jesus invites all to the table come on, let s eat.
