ORDER FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OCTOBER 29, 2017 10:30 AM INTROIT A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Trinity Choir The tune and text (based on Psalm 46) of A Mighty Fortress were written by Martin Luther in 1529. Trinity Choir is singing the original musical setting. HYMN OF PRAISE No. 92 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God WELCOME & INVOCATION Jeff Morrow Connections Pastor CONFESSION & ASSURANCE The following prayer and words of assurance are from 1539; they were used by both John Calvin at Geneva and John Knox in Scotland. LEADER PEOPLE Come now and let us make confession to God the Lord together; let everyone, with me, acknowledge our sin and shortcomings: Almighty God, eternal Father, we acknowledge and confess to you that we were born in unrighteousness. Our life is full of sin and transgression; we have not gladly believed your Word nor followed your holy commandments. For your goodness sake and for your name s sake, be gracious unto us, we pray, and forgive us all our sin, which is very great. Amen. LEADER LEADER Let each of us come before the face of the Lord, confessing our own faults. (Silent confession) This saying is true and we should believe it: that Christ Jesus came into the world to rescue sinners. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might be dead to sin and alive to all that is good. To all those who repent, therefore, I proclaim to you the forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 1
HYMN No. 168, v. 1-2, 4-5 I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art This hymn is sometimes attributed to John Calvin, though it is not likely that it was written by him. It was published in the 1545 Strasbourg edition of Clement Marot s Psalms and was later reprinted in an 1868 edition of Calvin s Opera (vol. 6). HYMN OF PRAISE Before the Throne of God Above 2
HYMN OF PRAISE No. 100 Holy, Holy, Holy! THE APOSTLES CREED PEOPLE I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into the grave. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy worldwide church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PASTORAL PRAYER TITHES & OFFERINGS CHOIR My song forever shall record the tender mercies of the Lord. Thy faithfulness will I proclaim, and every age shall know thy name. I sing of mercies that endure forever builded firm and sure, of faithfulness that never dies, established changeless in the skies. 3 Canticle of Faithfulness Trinity Choir
CHOIR PEOPLE CHOIR The heavens shall join in glad accord to praise thy wondrous works, O Lord. Thy faithfulness shall praise command where holy ones assembled stand. Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father. There is no shadow of turning with thee. Thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not; as thou hast been, thou forever wilt be. Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see! All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! In all thy works and vast designs thy faithfulness forever shines! Alleluia! MINISTRY UPDATE Global Missions Conference SERMON Isaiah 40:12-31 is on page 599 in the ESV Bibles. This morning s communion liturgy is exerpted and adapted from John Calvin, Strasbourg, 1545. LEADER We have heard how our Lord observed his supper with his disciples. Therefore, let each of us examine our conscience to see whether we truly repent of our sins, desire henceforth to live a life consistent with God s will, and above all to trust in God s mercy seeking salvation wholly in Jesus Christ, and, renouncing all hatred and dissention, determine to live in peace and love with our neighbors and to discern the unity of Christ s body which is the church. If we have this witness in our hearts before God, never doubt that he claims us as his children, and that the Lord Jesus addresses his Word to us, inviting us to his Table and giving us this holy sacrament offered to all his disciples. Above all, believe the promises of his unfailing truth, that Christ is truly willing to make us partakers of his body and blood, in order that we may possess him wholly and so that he may live in us as we in him. Though we see only bread and wine, we affirm that he fulfills in us everything he shows us in these visible things: that he is the true bread of heaven and food for eternal life. In giving himself to us, he claims us as his own. Therefore, come and let us receive this sacrament as a pledge of the goodness which his life and death has gained for us. May we never pull ourselves away from the one who invites us by his Word, but present ourselves to him with believing hearts, that he may give himself to us. Come, then, and receive what Christ offers. PEOPLE The Lord be with you. And also with you. SONG OF PRAISE All I Have Is Christ 5

NEW ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL STARTING NOVEMBER 5: Modern culture would have you believe that everyone has a soul-mate; that romance is the most important part of a successful marriage; that marriage does not mean 'til death do us part, but merely for as long as my needs are being met; and that when serious differences arise, divorce is the best solution. According to the bible, all of these modern-day assumptions miss what marriage is all about. Starting November 5, Trinity will offer a new Sunday school class following the book, The Meaning of Marriage, by Timothy Keller. Along with Kathy, his wife of thirty-six years, they draw a profound portrait of marriage from the pages of Scripture that neither idealizes nor rejects the institution but points us back to the relationship between God and man. The result is a vision for marriage that is refreshingly frank and unsentimental, yet hopeful and beautiful. This class is for anyone from singles, to couples considering marriage, to those who have been married recently or for a long time. It will be taught by Scott McNeill, Jeff Morrow and Michael Wichlan in room 130 at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Please pre-register for this course online at our website or at the Connect Desk. ELDER-LED PRAYER: Our next Elder-led Prayer will be Sunday, November 5 at 5:00 pm. Come join us for an elder-led prayer service where in community we are privileged to busy ourselves in prayer as a community and for our community as we seek the gospel to take root in our lives and to go out where we live, work and play. 8
