For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 WELCOME: A sincere welcome to all who worship with us here today. May our Great God, who has sent His only begotten Son to us in the miracle of Bethlehem, find in your life also the devotion of a true worshipper. May your life be filled with His praise. Please join us in the Fellowship Hall following the morning service for refreshments and fellowship. Children aged 3-5 meet your teacher in the foyer during the offering this morning for Children s Church. From Council: the budget, missionary support, 5:30 PM service time, and multiple nominations for council positions were approved for 2018. We will have the drawing of Elder and Deacon names this morning. Please pray that God s will be done in the selection of His men to lead our Church family in the coming year. Christmas Program practice will start today for grades PreK-8 th in place of Sunday School. Senior High Catechism will continue to meet through Sunday, December 17. Adult Bible Study will meet today at 5:00 PM in the Society Room. We will continue to Discover Philippians. Lesson 3: Christ s Attitude and Ours ABOUT OUR MESSAGES This morning is the first Sunday of Advent, a church season focusing on the arrival of Jesus Christ. This year, we will be focusing on the question of an old Christmas carol: What Child is This? Our first answer to the question comes from the line, The Babe, The Son of Mary. This child is, first and foremost, a real, human child, and Galatians 4:3-5 says that is good news for any human being trapped in the slavery of a world in sin.
This evening, our catechism series in the Lord s Prayer moves to the prayer, Your kingdom come. Morning news shows can be quite popular, and many times there will be headlines that you are surprised to find in the morning. Isaiah 52:1-10 provides God s people with this wake up call: the shouts of those announcing The Return of the King. This is the kingdom we pray for, where God reigns in justice and righteousness. PRAYERS AND PRAISES This Thursday, Ella Reiser, 18 month old granddaughter of Larry & Jan Hansum and daughter of Nikki & Aaron Reiser, will be undergoing corrective heart surgery in Omaha. Please lift Ella up to God's care in prayer and ask that the peace of His presence guard the family throughout this procedure. Thank you to those who sent cards and expressed condolences following the death of our father and grandfather, Gerritt Vander Streek. ~John & Gracia Kuipers and family Dear Friends at Platte CRC: Ana María is a new believer connected to the church we are planting, New Life Presbyterian Church. Recently she wrote: My son, Cristian, recently got hired at Oracle I want to ask you what would be the most correct and adequate way to thank God. I have been reading the Psalms of praise but I have not found a specific verse yet. If you could give me some verses to use to pray, I would be very grateful. Give thanks for Ana María s discipleship baby steps! Pray also for her husband, Mario, and son, Cristian, that they, too, would come to faith. Thank you for your partnership in the gospel in Mexico, including your most recent generous offering! ~Rev. Ben and Amy Meyer and family, Resonate Global Mission, Guadalajara, Mexico (bmeyer@crcna.org) Sioux Falls Church Plant Update: Please join us in thanking God for encouraging signs of support to plant a new CRC in the fastest growing region of South Dakota, northwest Sioux Falls. ABOUT OUR OFFERINGS This week, our regular offerings will be for Dakota Christian School. Dakota Christian School educates children and young people from the perspective of God s Word, in the Holy Bible, in all subjects. We emphasize God s truth in all areas of life to equip students for service in our world today and tomorrow. (from dchs.net) Our morning s Communion Thank Offering will be for World Renew: Hurricane Relief. World Renew serves worldwide as the development, disaster response, and justice arm of the Christian Reformed Church in North America. (paraphrased from worldrenew.org) Next week, our offerings are for the Abbott House in Mitchell, SD. For more than 75 years Abbott House has provided girls ages 7 to 23 with a second chance at youth a place of hope and recovery for those who have suffered trauma and abuse. Without help now, many of these young women perpetuate the cycle of violence and punish themselves indefinitely for the tragedy that was placed on their shoulders. It is a place where girls get another chance to turn the abuse and victimization of their past into experiences they live with, but that do not overwhelm their lives. Abbott House strives to provide premier services for girls and their families.
