May we be blessed by our worship this day, and may we prove faithful to our Savior every day! Amen.
Opening Anthem: Grades 7-8 (1 PM) The Order of Worship Call to Worship (Spoken with soft musical background; Congregations sings last stanza) Pastor: Come to Calv ry s holy mountain, sinners, ruined by the fall; Here a pure and healing fountain flows for you, for me, for all, In a full, perpetual tide, opened when our Savior died. Come in poverty and meanness, come defiled, without, within; From infection and uncleanness, from the leprosy of sin, Wash your robes and make them white; you shall walk with God in light. Come in sorrow and contrition, wounded, powerless, and blind; Here the guilty, free remission, here the troubled, peace may find. Health this fountain will restore; they that drink shall thirst no more. Cong.: We who drink shall live forever; tis a soul renewing flood. God is faithful; God will never break His covenant of blood, Signed when our Redeemer died, sealed when He was glorified! LSB 435 Invocation P: We worship today in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: (sung) Amen. How could I refuse to shun Ev ry sinful pleasure Since for me God's only Son Suffered without measure? Graciously my faith renew; Help me bear my crosses, Learning humbleness from You, Peace mid pain and losses. 2
May I give You love for love! Hear me, O my Savior, That I may in heav n above Sing Your praise forever. LSB # 440 (alt. TLH 140:1,4,6) Our Confession of Sins and God s Absolution P: This is the message which we have heard from Jesus and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. (1 John 1:5) C: If we say that we have fellowship with God, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. (1 John 1:6) P: But if we walk in the light as God is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ God s Son cleanses us from all sin. (1 John 1:7) C: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:8) P: If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9) C: O LORD God, we rejoice that You have called us out of darkness and into Your marvelous light. Yet, we must confess that at times we find ourselves falling into darkness. All too often our thoughts, words, and actions violate Your commandments and dishonor Your name. We confess these sins to You, O Lord, and grieve over them. We pray that You would by Your grace forgive us and cleanse us, even as You have promised. We plead for Your mercy and trust in Your promises! P: Dear children of God Your heavenly Father has loved you together with the entire world. He sent Jesus to be the atoning sacrifice for your sins and those of the whole world! Rejoice, therefore, in the mercy of your God, be assured that you stand forgiven before the cross, and pray for the Spirit s power to enable you to walk in righteousness. 3
Liturgical Hymn: 4
Lenten Reading Part 1 Musical Selection: Congregation Cross of Jesus, cross of sorrow, Where the blood of Christ was shed, Perfect man on thee did suffer, Perfect God on thee has bled. Here the King of all the ages, Throned in light ere worlds could be, Robed in mortal flesh is dying, Crucified by sin for me. Cross of Jesus, cross of sorrow, Where the blood of Christ was shed, Perfect Man on thee did suffer, Perfect God on thee has bled. LSB 428:1-2,4 Lenten Reading Part 2 Confession of Faith: Luther s Explanation to the 2 nd Article I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sin, from death, and from the power of the devil, not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and His innocent suffering and death. He did this that I should be His very own, live under Him in His kingdom, and serve Him in eternal righteousness, innocence, and joy; just as He is risen from death, lives and reigns in eternity. This is most certainly true. Hymn: Jesus, Grant That Balm and Healing 1. Jesus, grant that balm and healing In Your holy wounds I find, Ev ry hour that I am feeling Pains of body and of mind. Should some evil thought within Tempt my treach rous heart to sin, Show the peril, and from sinning Keep me from its first beginning. 2. Should some lust or sharp temptation Fascinate my sinful mind, 5
Draw me to Your cross and Passion, And new courage I shall find. Or should Satan press me hard, Let me then be on my guard, Saying, "Christ for me was wounded," That the Tempter flee confounded. 3. If the world my heart entices With the broad and easy road, With seductive, sinful vices, Let me weigh the awful load You were willing to endure; Help me flee all thoughts impure, And to master each temptation, Calm in prayer and meditation. 4. Ev ry wound that pains or grieves me By Your wounds, Lord, is made whole; When I'm faint, Your cross revives me, Granting new life to my soul. Yes, Your comfort renders sweet Ev ry bitter cup I meet; For Your all-atoning Passion Has procured my soul's salvation. 5. O my God, my Rock and Tower, Grant that in Your death I trust, Knowing death has lost its power Since You crushed it in the dust. Savior, let Your agony Ever help and comfort me; When I die, be my Protection, Light and Life and Resurrection. LSB #421 (alt. Pastor: Go in peace. Serve the Lord with gladness. Benediction: (sung by Congregation) Closing Hymn: (1:00 p.m.) Jesus, Refuge of the Weary 1. Jesus, Refuge of the weary, Blest Redeemer, whom we love, Fountain in life's desert dreary, Savior from the world above: Often have Your eyes, offended, Gazed upon the sinner's fall; Yet, upon the cross extended, You have borne the pain of all. 2. Do we pass that cross unheeding, Breathing no repentant vow, Though we see You wounded, bleeding, See Your thorn-encircled brow? Yet Your sinless death has brought us Life eternal, peace, and rest; Only what Your grace has taught us Calms the sinner's deep distress. 10
3. Jesus, may our hearts be burning With more fervent love for You; May our eyes be ever turning To behold Your cross anew Till in glory, parted never From the blessed Savior's side, Graven in our hearts forever, Dwell the cross, the Crucified! Amen. LSB 423 (alt. TLH 145) (7:00 p.m.) All Praise to Thee, My God, This Night 1. All praise to Thee, my God, this night For all the blessings of the light. Keep me, oh, keep me, King of kings, Beneath Thine own almighty wings. Forgive me, Lord, for Thy dear Son, The ill that I this day have done That with the world, myself and Thee, I, ere I sleep, at peace may be. 2. Teach me to live that I may dread The grave as little as my bed. Teach me to die that so I may Rise glorious at the awe-full Day. Oh, may my soul on Thee repose, And may sweet sleep mine eyelids close, Sleep that shall me more vigorous make To serve my God when I awake! 3. When in the night I sleepless lie, My soul with heav nly thoughts supply; Let no ill dreams disturb my rest, No pow rs of darkness me distress. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav nly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. 11 CW #592 (alt.
