Heartbeat INDIAN HILLS COMMUNITY CHURCH October 30, 2016 Grace and peace to you, beloved of God, on this last Sunday of October. We trust as we worship together that God will be honored in all of our thoughts and words. We praise Him for the revelation He has made of Himself through the Word of God; that we may know Him and know Him in a personal and intimate way. As believers in Jesus Christ, we are especially grateful for what Jesus Christ has done on the cross for us. May we never forget His sacrifice on our behalf as His very life was required to pay our sin penalty. Debt of Gratitude Thank you is extended to each one for all you contribute to the ministry of the Word at Indian Hills Community Church. We know God hears your prayers and we trust He is working through each one, as it is your faithfulness that keeps the ministry going. Not only do you cover the ministry with prayers, but many of you have given your very lives your time, strength, talents and treasure to the work of the Lord through this local church. We truly have a huge debt of gratitude that we can never repay and no matter how many times we say thank you, we continue to be in your debt all the more. Each of us has a choice of where we invest our time and strength, and we are deeply thankful for all you do for our Lord through this local fellowship of believers, known as The Hills. Busy & Exciting Days These are busy and exciting days in the ministry. Our fall programs are up and running, and God s Word is being taught and proclaimed. By God s grace, faithful and gifted servants are teaching the truth to every age and these classes are a time of encouragement and spiritual enrichment. Your continued allegiance to the truth is an encouragement to our leaders and a godly example for our children. Daylight Saving Time Ends Don t forget to turn your clocks back before you retire on Saturday, November 5. Have a good week! Heartbeat 3

New Senior Associate Pastor Jeff Horn Jeff Horn will be joining the church staff as Senior Associate Pastor on November 1. Jeff s spiritual gifts are administration and teaching and he will be relying on God s guidance as he serves as church administrator. Besides implementing the plans of the elders, Jeff will be mentoring younger staff, coordinating activities, and assisting this local fellowship of believers with meeting the spiritual needs of our people. Jeff will continue teaching his home Bible study, and fill in for Sunday school teachers as needed. Jeff has been on the Board of Elders since 1994. He will continue to sit with the Board, but will not be a voting member. The difference is that Jeff is now a Staff Elder, instead of a Board Elder. The elders have been discussing the need to fill the Senior Associate Pastor position for some time. Although Jeff was comfortable working in a secular job (he sold banking software) he thought this would be something he d like to do. The elders unanimously agreed to offer Jeff the position and Jeff accepted, believing God is leading him in this direction. Jeff grew up in Broken Bow and attended a small country church with his family. His parents by Gale Engle Jeff Horn and the adults of the church had been saved during a missionary conference when Jeff was young, so he grew up hearing Bible stories and the gospel. When Jeff was six years old he recalls talking to his mother and understanding that he was a sinner, separated from God. In faith, he turned from his sins and believed Jesus died for him. At that tender age, Jeff became a child of the King. Over the years, he has seen God s hand in his life, molding and directing him. The first time Jeff attended Indian Hills was in 1981, during his last semester at UNL. After graduation, Jeff moved to Kansas City, where he met Janice. They were married in 1985 and returned to Lincoln in September 1988. We came to Indian Hills the first Sunday we were here, and we ve been here ever since, Jeff said. Jeff and Janice are the parents of two grown children. Heartbeat 5

Present the Gospel Like Jesus Did Gil Rugh The Bible clearly teaches that salvation is a gift from God that cannot be earned by any works. Yet, true faith always includes a willingness to turn from sin and surrender to the lordship of Christ. That is the message Jesus preached and that is the message His servants are to preach. It is good to constantly remind ourselves that being a disciple of Christ is a serious commitment. It means putting Christ above family and possessions, and it includes counting the cost. Today many people are saying, If the gospel is preached that way, you ll drive people away. However, that is the way Jesus said the gospel must be preached, because it is the truth. We must be careful that we present the gospel faithfully, in the same way that Jesus presented it. While it is true many people will not respond to the gospel, the elect will. Some people who profess faith will want to hang on to their old religious systems or not end immoral relationships. Others will be unwilling to offend their families, yet claim they are Christians because they have believed in Christ. But that is not the gospel Jesus preached. He said that a person must consider those things and be willing to give them up before making a commitment to Him. When we share the gospel we must be willing to confront sin as Jesus confronted it. up sin is uncomfortable for most of us, but sinners cannot be saved without realizing that they have offended a holy God. We must preach to an unbelieving world that there is a living and holy God who will someday judge their eternal souls. If unbelievers are not willing to come to Christ in faith and confess Him, Jesus will deny them before the living God and sentence them to an eternal hell. People should also know that if they do come to Christ, it might cost them their job, friends or family. Often we are afraid of preaching a works-based gospel, so we don t tell people to give up their immorality, drunkenness or whatever sins they are living in. Salvation is then reduced to fire insurance, because we imply that people can escape hell while continuing to live godless lives. But Jesus never made those kinds of bargains. As the crowds following Jesus grew, He made clear that being a disciple meant making Him the number one priority in life. In our presentation of the gospel, in every situation, we must be careful to present the same message Jesus presented. The heart of this message is the cross. A person must understand that Jesus paid a great cost for our sins and that sin must go. When a person comes to believe in Jesus as Savior and Lord, their life belongs to Him. The gospel is a hard message to accept. In fact, only those who are called by the Spirit of God will respond to it. But praise God, it is the message that brings life. Purpose of a Home Bible Study Home Bible Studies provide a great atmosphere for spiritual growth. The benefits of becoming part of a Home Bible Study are great and we encourage you to consider the following verses and pray about your involvement in this area of ministry. For more information, contact Duane Nelsen at 402-483-4541. Study the Word of God Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, handling accurately the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105). All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work (2 Tim. 3:16, 17). Love One Another Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God (1 John 4:7). This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you (John 15:12). And walk in love, just as Christ also loved you, and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma (Ephesians 5:2). For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, You shall love your neighbor as yourself (Galatians 5:14). Pray for One Another Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much (James 5:16). Comfort One Another Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15). Bear one another s burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2). Encourage/Exhort One Another Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, that it may give grace to those who hear (Ephesians 4:29). Therefore encourage one another, and build up one another, just as you also are doing (1 Thessalonians 5:11). 8 Heartbeat

We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with all men (1 Thess. 5:14). Fellowship with One Another We who had sweet fellowship together, walked in the house of God in the throng (Psalm 55:14). I am a companion of all those who fear Thee, and of those who keep Thy precepts (Psalm 119:63). Serve One Another For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another (Gal. 5:13). Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many (Matthew 20:28). For the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12). If you d like to be part of a Home Bible Study, contact Duane Nelsen at 402-483-4541.
