Heartbeat INDIAN HILLS COMMUNITY CHURCH October 23, 2016 Ministry of Prayer Your prayers serve as the backbone of this ministry. Many have shared how you regularly pray for the Lord s work through this local church and we are thankful for your ministry of intercession. While we enjoy many blessings from the Lord, we must not forget that we are in a battle. The call to duty has been sent out and reinforcements are needed on the front line. If you have retired from active prayer duty, we urge you to reenlist. Put on your spiritual armor and report to the all-mighty, allpowerful God. Prayer warriors are needed to lift up the ministry, pastors, staff, Sunday school teachers, Awana leaders, the brethren, etc. As God s soldiers, each of us must dedicate ourselves to ceaseless intercession. The Holy Spirit will remind us of prayer items and guide us as we commune with the Father. Prayer is hindered when we haven t been faithful, but God is quick to forgive His children, and when we come to Him with a penitent heart, intimacy is restored. May our heavenly Father guide each of us in our commitment to pray without ceasing. Surely we will be amazed at the peace we experience, and humbled to see God s hand at work, in and through us. Being Thankful We have much to be thankful for, both as a local church and as individuals. It has been said that the first negative step in any person s life is in ceasing to be thankful. Contemplating on God s blessings is a good way to remind ourselves to be thankful, remembering how God provides for us as His children. Above all, He has provided Jesus Christ as the redeemer and sin bearer for each of us as individuals. Have a good week reflecting on the great richness of God s grace. Heartbeat 3

Wednesday Evening Study Begins October 26 In Harmony with the Spirit Larry Riekenberg Through the years the study of the person and work of the Holy Spirit has been neglected in some Christian circles. They echo the disciples of John the Baptist who said in the Book of Acts we have not Larry Riekenberg even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit. A look at an evangelical threevolume set of Systematic Theology with 2,260 pages shows ten pages dedicated to the study of the Holy Spirit. One 400 page book on Systematic Theology devoted six pages, and this is tucked in the doctrine of Salvation. The Holy Spirit and His work is an often misunderstood doctrine of Christianity and it is so very vital to our lives as believers and our growth in the Lord. This study will look at how the Spirit of God is presented in Scripture; and how He practically works in our lives to give us security, comfort and power. Larry Riekenberg will be teaching this class. Protecting God s Reputation God is clear about Himself and said, I am the Lord, and there is no other. I am the One forming light and creating darkness, causing well-being and creating calamity. I am the Lord who does all these (Isaiah 45:6, 7). We think we are protecting the Lord s reputation when we claim, It wasn t the Lord s will for that to happen, or The Lord wouldn t have wanted that to happen. Those statements are simply not true. We must be certain to base our theology on the Bible, not from our emotions or our own personal sense of right and wrong. God creates the calamity. It was God s will for the house to fall upon Job s ten children. The sovereign God did that, but He does not delight in making people suffer. As His children, we don t have to fear Him, but we do have to accept what He does with the people and the world He has created. He does what is best for His children, even though we may not understand how that is possible as we live through sometimes extremely difficult and painful situations. Join Pastor Gil Rugh as he searches the Scriptures to determine if God is sovereign over everything on earth, including both good and evil. God s Sovereignty over Good and Evil by Gil Rugh is free and available at Sound Words and in the lobby book racks. New Book by Gil Rugh God s Sovereignty over Good and Evil Tension exists between God s total sovereignty and man s full responsibility. If total sovereignty means that nothing happens that is not under God s sovereign control, how can man be held responsible? On the other hand, if man is responsible in making his own decisions, how can God be in control of what a person will decide to do? Who is in charge of affairs on earth? Is it God or the Devil? It s agreed that God reigns supreme in Heaven, but with all the evil on earth, could God really be in control? Heartbeat 5

Teacher Training All men interested in teaching the Word, wondering if they have the gift of teaching, or would like to hone their skills as a Bible teacher are invited to attend the Teacher Training Bootcamp beginning Saturday, October 29. The four-week class is free and will meet in the conference room from 9:30 10:30 a.m. each Saturday with the last class taking place on November 19. Duane Nelsen will be teaching the class, which will begin with an introduction to preaching and teaching. Men should pick up the training manual from Duane, 402-483- 4541, or Sound Words. Plan to read the introduction through chapter 3 before the first class. If you are high school age or older and would like to learn more about choosing the right study tools; choosing the passage; and How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news! (Romans 10:15). 6 Heartbeat Pastor Duane Nelsen determining the context of the passage, this class is for you. The second, third, and fourth classes will deal with determining the literary type; determining word relationships; determining word meanings; finding the main point of the passage; putting a sermon together; and selecting a plan of delivery. A teaching lab will be available on November 19 for anyone who would like to put a message together and present it for pointers from a couple seasoned teachers. Men are needed to teach the Word at many levels. Each week men are needed to teach in nursing homes, in the children and adult Sunday school classes and in home Bible studies.

God s Amazing Plan Gil Rugh God s intention from the very beginning was to prepare man for the coming of His Son. God began this preparation process with Adam and Eve, the first people on earth. As a result of disobeying God s command, they were overwhelmed with guilt. While seeking to hide themselves from God, they attempted to make themselves coverings from leaves. God came and confronted them regarding their sin and provided coverings for them made from animal skins. The slaying of those animals and the provision of covering were a declaration to Adam and Eve that the penalty for sin was death and that God had to make provision for them. This act foreshadowed Christ coming to make provision for us. A little later, Cain and Abel came to present their sacrifices to God. Cain brought an offering from the produce he raised. Abel also brought the best of his herd as a sacrifice. God accepted Abel s sacrifice, but He did not accept Cain s. The reason, very simply, was that Cain s sacrifice was not given in faith. This showed that God is concerned with the condition of man s heart. Later on, Abraham was commanded to take his own son, Isaac, and sacrifice him to God. Just as Abraham was ready to carry out that act, God intervened and provided a ram as a substitute in fulfillment of what Abraham had told his son: God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son (Gen. 22:8). This was a reminder to Abraham and to us that in God s time He would provide the sacrifice necessary to pay the penalty for sin. The entire sacrificial system in Israel was designed to constantly remind people of their sinfulness and their need for forgiveness, and that the penalty for sin was death. Yet the Bible says, For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins (Heb. 10:4). The sacrifices could only remind the people of their sinfulness and of the penalty for their sins; they could not take away those sins. God never intended that animal sacrifices should pay the penalty for sin. The sacrifice for sin needed to be one who completely identified with humanity, a human being in every way, yet without sin. That is why God provided His own Son, Jesus. The Bible tells us that at the proper time, God sent forth His Continued on page 8 Heartbeat 7

Continued from page 7 God s Amazing Plan Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons (Gal. 4:4,5). It was God s sovereign plan for all of human history to lead up to this crucial event. Jesus Christ was born as a hu- man being, in every way humanity as well as deity. He came to earth for one purpose to pay the penalty for the sins of mankind through His own death on the cross so that God might offer forgiveness and deliverance to all who would believe in Him. Jesus died for our sins and then rose from the dead. That is God s testimony that salvation is complete and that redemption is secure. 9:15 a.m....light Brunch (15 minutes) 9:30 a.m...
