INTRODUCTION The Haynes Family Papers, 1680-1930, was a gift from Mrs. M.H. Culbertson of Chapel Hill, Tennessee. The collection consists of ca. 900 items and occupies 1.64 cubic feet of shelf space. There are no restrictions on this collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENT The Haynes Family Papers, containing approximately 900 items, spanning the period of 1680-1930, although the bulk is largely concentrated in the years of 1830-1930. The collection is composed of accounts, clippings, correspondences, genealogy, legal documents, notes, photographs, and writings. The mass of the collection is comprised of correspondences. The correspondences are largely written by family members to other family members concerning events of the times and family news. Of special interest are five letters written by Zillah Resigh Haynes concerning his work as a teacher in Lawrence County, Tennessee, and a letter by Margaret Haynes concerning a ladies group drilling for the Civil War in Smith County, Tennessee. A complete explanation of the correspondence can be found in the Name Index. The genealogy in the collection concerns the Haynes and Wilson families, giving a very good description of the family.
