CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH of the PCA GATHERED TO WORSHIP DECEMBER 23, 2018 CHIMES WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE The prelude is a sacred curtain dropped between the world and our time of worship. During this time of preparation, you are encouraged to pray silently, asking the Holy Spirit to enable you to cling to and delight yourself in Christ. *CALL TO WORSHIP (PLEASE SILENCE ALL PHONES AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES.) *AFFIRMATION OF PRAISE (# 203) Hark! the Herald Angels Sing *COLLECTIVE CONFESSION Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways, like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done, and there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults. Restore thou them that be penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind, in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy name. *ASSURANCE OF PARDON 1 John 2:1-2 Be comforted and hear the good tidings of the Gospel: If any man hath sinned, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 2
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Unison: The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty Maker of heaven and earth; I believe in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; World without end, Amen, Amen. HYMN (# 204) Away In A Manger PRAYER OF CONSECRATION OFFERTORY *DOXOLOGY Praise God from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Children (up to age 5) may be dismissed to nursery building AFTER the doxology. 3
*MORNING PRAYER (CLOSING WITH THE LORD S PRAYER ) Our father, who art in heaven; Hallowed be Thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts; as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil; for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *CHORAL RESPONSE SPECIAL MUSIC Noel Mrs. Elizabeth Syverson Mr. Adam Bell THE NEW TESTAMENT LESSON LUKE 2:8-20 Minister: This is the Word of God. People: Thanks be to God! PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SERMON Sola Deo Gloria Pastor Dick Jones *HYMN (# 207) *BENEDICTION CHORAL RESPONSE *POSTLUDE Good Christian Men, Rejoice Regarding The Apostles Creed the reference to descended into hell, is not a declaration that Christ literally went to hell, but rather that Christ truly died on the cross. The earliest versions of the Creed use the word Hades (the abode of the dead), rather than hell. Further, the reference to the catholic church means the universal church; the word catholic means universal. Reminder: ~ Children s Bulletins are located at the back left entrance. ~Please take your children to the restroom before the service starts. ~The Nursery is available for children 0 through 4 years of age. ~ We have a cry room for nursing moms & babies just across from the elevator. 4
The Heidelberg Catechism Q & A # 31-32 Minister: All: Minister: All: Why is He called Christ, that is, Anointed? Because He is ordained of God the Father, and anointed with the Holy Spirit, to be our chief Prophet and Teacher, who has fully revealed to us the secret counsel and will of God concerning our redemption; and our only High Priest, who by the one sacrifice of His body has redeemed us, and makes continual intercession for us with the Father; and our eternal King, who governs us by His Word and Spirit, and defends and preserves us in the salvation obtained for us. But why are you called a Christian? Because I am a member of Christ by faith, and thus a partaker of His anointing, that I may confess His Name, present myself a living sacrifice of thankfulness to Him, and with a free and good conscience fight against sin and the devil in this life, and hereafter reign with Him eternally over all creatures. REMINDERS *FOOD AND BEVERAGES (including water) are not allowed in the sanctuary. *PLEASE FILL OUT the Welcome Pad and pass it down your row for all to sign. *CHILDREN S BULLETINS are available in the sanctuary at the back left entrance. *ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES are available for use during the service and may be obtained from the sound technician located in the rear of the sanctuary. MISSION STATEMENT Seeking to make disciples as God s Word is taught and the people of God seek the Glory of God as they Worship in Spirit and in Truth. During that historic period known as The Reformation, men of great courage and conviction set about to reform a Church which had departed from many of the essential truths of Orthodox Christianity. These truths are often referred to as the solas. The Latin phrases are: SOLA SCRIPTURA or THE SCRIPTURE ALONE! SOLUS CHRISTUS or CHRIST ALONE! SOLA GRATIA or GRACE ALONE! SOLE FIDE or FAITH ALONE!
