We wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to Jane and Dostal and her deceased husband Vern who had set up a memorial account at St. Mary that paid for the installation of the are conditioning in the sanctuary of the church. You generosity and consideration will be appreciated not only in the moment for but for those clergy who will follow to be able to celebrate Mass in comfortable conditions beneath the warm lights of the sanctuary. Let us pray for our beloved deceased, most especially for Jeff Rozmus who passed away this past week and whose funeral is this Monday at 10:30 am. At St. Mary. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. An Interesting Statement is, "Know Your Rights" On Friday, June 22, the Feast of Ss. John Fisher and Thomas More we began observing Religious Freedom Week. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops ( USCCB ) has created a series of daily reflections and suggestions for actions one might take. It is no mistake that the founding fathers declared that the first right illumined in the Bill of Rights is the Right of Religious Freedom. Historically, several groups fled Europe to the United States in search of Religious Freedom. Sadly, it seems as though some in our country have forgotten our history. It is significant that we begin the observance of Religious Freedom Week with the Feast of Ss. John Fisher and Thomas More. Both men loved Britan. Thomas More was the Chancellor of England and John Fisher was Chancellor of Cambridge University and Bishop of Rochester. They were faithful to their country, however, both men realized they were being forced to choose between their faith and their King in Henry VIII's desire to divorce Queen Catherine and support the King's Act of Supremacy. Both men remained faithful to their religious beliefs and were martyred for their faith. Many people of different faiths made their way to the New World searching for a place where they could observe their faith without persecution. The county's first leaders remembered the goal of the settlers of this nation and enshrined the Right of Religious Freedom as the First Amendment of the Constitution. We must exercise our rights and remember them. We should remember all of those who have given their lives in defense of our Religious Freedom. We have to "Know our Rights." The reason that I say that the statement "Know Your Rights" is interesting is that there is a presentation "Know Your Rights" that seeks to educate immigrants on their rights in this country. The link between the phrase "Know Your Rights" is significant because if we don't, the outcome can be the same. If we don't know, respect, defend, and exercise our Rights un the Law, it could be that we might lose those rights. As is said, "If we don't remember our past, we are doomed to repeat it;" "If we ( Americans and Immigrants ) don't defend our rights we might lose them." I encourage you to observe Religious Freedom Week with us. Log on to the USCCB website and pray, reflect, and act along with the Church. We will give you an "umph." Printed in the bulletin this weekend are the reflections for Saturday, June 23 and Sunday, June 24.
