REVISITS THE ARDENNES The skies of Belgium in winer are jus as gray oday as hey werehiry-fouryears ago when he unexpeced and horoughly planned Rundsed Offensive broke ou of he dark woods of he Schnee Eifel on he unsuspecing soldiers of he 106h Division near S. Vih bu he counryside oday is filled wih aracive, solidly buil new houses and he villages we knew so long ago are immaculaely clean and unbelievably prosperous. HEUNION IN FRIENDSHIP An enerprising Texas ravel agen creaed a rip o his region under he ile of a Reunion in Friendship which was o have had paricipans from boh sides of he line and in which wo ofhe principals were o have been our own General Wesmoreland, who was presen wih his charming wife Kisy and, from he oher side, he commander of he Fifh Panzer Army General Baron Hasso von Maneuffel who unforunaely passed on in lae Ocober nor did any oher German veerans ake par in he program. In any case, I fel ha his wa~oo good an 0pporuniy o pass up so I :;:~4'4".. arranged o join he group in ~':'!:~~i':x">:;:""'~~'~":'"'' Luxembourg and o come home h. from Brussels. The areas of m~ ineres o he 9h Division were' somewha removed from ha of ~"} many of he veerans who:/ comprised he our so in order o visi he Vich-Hurgen Monschau area I engaged a selfdrive car o have a more leisurely look a he errain for myself. MEMORY PLAYING Fj\LSE TRICKS I migh be well opoinoil1 ha while roads and direcions are well marked, memory has a way of playing false ricks and i is easy o ge urned around, if no acually los, when looking for some dimly recalled rack or farm. Also he days a his ime of year, Dec. 12-18, are very shor so ha ime for reverie is sricly limied. Never-he-Iess, wih he help of 8 Sars o Vicory and he volumes of he Office of he Chief of Miliary Hisory on he Seigfred Line and he Ardennes, i is quie easy o revisi any of he poins of ineres ha an individual migh wan o find. i: ~J':':: SIGNS OF WAR HAVE.DISAPPEARED In mos places he signs of war have disappeared and in some cases roads have been widenedor "recurved" so ha landmarks are no easily found, a case in poin being hegashof Peer Heinen in Muzenich, near Monschau, which was he 7h Infanry CP from December 19, 1944 o January 30, 1945, and which I found easily in 1956 bu could no be cerain of oday. Driving is easy alhough he evining rush hour is as frusraing in Leige as i is in.ourciiesandheabsence of an observed speed limi on he limied access high ways creaes some concerns, also here are many large rucks coupled o four-wheel railers ha we do no see here. The Michelin maps (1: 200,000 No's. 2 & 4) are invaluable alhough some place names are hard o find and racks on he map can be easily passed by on he ground. There are many blownup bunkers bu only a few dragons-eeh, he ones I saw being near Simmerah. The foress are being inensively logged over and heir cu imber.is being replaced by newly pianed conifers. id~~~:~~~:c:{ 47h Infanry C.P. a Vich. REVISIT EACH RE(iIMEN TALAREA I is no possible o revisi each Regimenal area as he fron he Division covered was so large bu I was able o go up he road Roegen-To-Zweifall ino Vich and hen ou o Mausbach, Gressenich and Schevenhue o see how hings look oday. The 47h CP sill sands solidly in he almos unchanged cener of Vich and he buchershop nex door is sill in busin~ss. Also he prosperous farm ha was Major Murphy's S-4 headquarers is easily locaed. Wha he said showed ha he was righ up where he could see how a good hard bale is fough. INFANTRY IN COMBAT Here is one of his repors on Infanry in comba: "We're now wih an Infanry oufi ha has baled ceaselessly for four days and nighs. "This norhern warfare has been in he lllpunains. You don' ride much any more. I is walking and climbing and crawling counry. The mounains aren' big bu hey are consan. They are largely reeless. They are easy o defend and bier o ake. Bu we are aking hem. "The Germans lie on he back slope of every slope of every ridge, deeply dug ino fox holes. In fron of hem he fields and pasures are hideous wih housands of hidden mines. The forward slopes are lef open, unenaned, and if he Americans ried o scale hese slopes hey would be murdered wholesale in an inferno of machine-gun crossfire plus morars and grenades. PULVERIZING THE ENEMY "Consequenly we don' do i ha way. We have fallen back o he old warfare of firs pulverizing he enemy wih arillery, hen sweeping around he ends of he hill wih infanry and aking hem from he sides and behind. "I've wrien before how he big guns crack and roar almos consanly hruou he day and nigh. They lay a screen ahead of our roops. By magnificen shooing hey drop shells on he back slopes. By means of shells imed o burs a few fee from he ground, hey ge he Germans even in heir fox holes. Our roops have found ha he Germans dig fox holes down and hen under, rying o ge cover from he shell burss ha shower deah from above. Our arillery has really been sensaional... He was wounded a Gafsa, Tunisia, by a German mine as he was helping clear a minefield as a member of he 9h Infanry Division's 15h Engineers. UNBEUEVABLECAULDRON OF FIRE "All he guns in anyone secor can be cenered o shoo a one spo. And when we lay he whole business on a German hill he whole slope seems o erup. I becomes an unbelievable cauldron of fire and smoke and dir. Veeran German soldiers say hey have never been hru anyhing like i. "Now o he Infanry - he God- damned infanry, as hey like o call hemselves. LEARN TO LIVE "I love he infanry because hey are he underdogs. They are he mud-rain-fros-andwind boys. They have no comfors and hey even learn o live wihou he necessiies. And in he end hey are he guys ha wars can' be won wihou. "All along he lengh of his ribbon here is now a hin line of men. For four days and nighs hey have fough hard, eaen lile, washed none, and slep hardly a all. Their nighs have been sleepless and miserable wih he crash of arillery. "The men are walking. They are 50 fee apar, for dispersal. Their walk is slow, for hey are dead weary, as you can ell even when you look a hem from behind. Every line and sag of heir bodies speaks heir inhuman exhausion. "On heir shoulders and backs hey carry heavy seel ripods, machine-gun barrels, leaden boxes of ammuniion. Their fee seem o sink ino he ground from he overload hey are bearing. "They don' slouch. I is he errible deliberaion of each sep ha spells ou heir appaling iredness. Their faces are black and unshaven. They are young men, bu he grime and whiskers and exhausion make hem look middleaged. SIMPLE EXPRESSION "In heir eyes, as hey pass is no hared, no exciemen, no despair, no he onic of heir vicory - here is jus he simple expression of being here as ho hey had been here doing his forever, and nohing else. "The line moves on, bu i never ends. All afernoon men keep coming round he hill and vanishing evenually over he horizon. I is one long, ired line of anlike men.
