New Translation of the Prayers of the Mass Begins November 26-27, st at the Masses for the 1 Sunday of Advent Please take a copy of the Catholic Update: A Walk Through The Mass. The copies are in the vestibule. This update is being provided to help renew and deepen our understanding of the Mass in anticipation of the new translation of the prayers for Mass. For the next several weeks, in preparation for the new translation of the Mass prayers, information (in the church bulletin and in other educational materials) is being provided to explain the change in translation and to renew our understanding of the Mass. In the following pages of this week s bulletin we have provided our own side-by-side comparison of the people s responses in the current and new translations. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have also provided a side-by-side comparison of the two translations, and you can view it by going to the USCCB link on our parish website. The responses are not difficult. The newly-translated prayers that the priest says may require some practice to properly express them. Here is a comparison of the current Preface VIII and the newly-translated version to be used in the new missal: Our current missal: Father, all powerful and ever-living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks. When your children sinned and wandered far from your friendship, you reunited them with yourself through the blood of your Son and the power of the Holy Spirit. You gather them into your Church, to be one as you, Father, are one with your Son and the Holy Spirit You call them to be your people, to praise your wisdom in all your works. You make them the body of Christ and the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. In our joy we sing to your glory with all the choirs of angels: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might.... The new missal will be: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For, when your children were scattered afar by sin, through the Blood of your Son and the power of the Spirit, you gathered them again to yourself, that a people, formed as one by the unity of the Trinity, made the body of Christ and the temple of the Holy Spirit, might, to the praise of your manifold wisdom, be manifest as the Church. And so, in company with the choirs of Angels, we praise you, and with joy we proclaim: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts....

People: Glory to you, O Lord. NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
