CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD In France, Pere Noel may dress like a bishop, an American Santa or wear a plain red or brown robe tied with a rope. He travels with his donkey named Gui (Mistletoe). The usual milk for Pere Noel is replaced by a glass of wine. French children leave their shoes by the fireplace to be filled with gifts instead of hanging up stockings. In Holland Sinterklaas appears as a bishop with a luxurious white beard. He rides a white horse and wears a long red robe trimmed in golden braid. His tall hat is a bishop s mitre and he carries a shepherd s staff. Dutch children put out wooden shoes filled with carrots and hay for Sinterklaas horse. In Germany, Kris Kringle leaves candy and gifts in childrens shoes. Today his costume is much like any modern Santa though in earlier times he was sometimes shown dressed in brown fur or a red robe carrying a small Christmas tree. In Sweden and Norway, holiday gnomes dressed in red and white, deliver gifts to good children. The gnomes long, pointed hat is their most distinctive feature. In Russia, Ded Moroz, also known as Father Frost, wears a red or blue robe and fur topped boots. Sometimes his robe contains frost designs and his hat has large, curling horns. He may be accompanied by his granddaughter dressed in a glittering, frosty gown. In the U.S., Santa became famous in the 19 th Century but it wasn t until the 1930 s that Santa, as we know him today, appeared with his red suit, fur trimmed hat and black, shiny boots. Sinterklaas
