Homeschooling with Proverbs: Additional helpful tips for teaching Lesson One for children Read the book of Proverbs 1:1-7 with your children. Read it several times, slowly so they can let the words sink in. If your children read, let them take turns reading the book to the family. Explain why Solomon was considered the wisest man of all time. God blessed Solomon with wisdom because he was pleased that Solomon requested this instead of wealth or power. Discuss how we can please God. Discuss the purpose of Proverbs to give instruction on how to make the right decisions in life based upon the laws of God. The book teaches young and immature Christians about how to live a godly life that is pleasing to the Lord. We can all learn not matter our maturity level or our walk with the Lord. Highlight how Solomon learned from his father, King David, in the same way the children are learning from you and from God in His word. However, be sure to ask the children to practice how to ask God for encouragement. Help them with this. (We all need to practice this!) Explain the differences between the wise and foolish. A wise person is open to hearing God s teachings and that allows God to increase his knowledge. A person who is a fool can not learn wisdom because he does not want to learn. Teach children how to be reverent and have reverence for God. Use a quiet place or time to pray as a family. Focus on teaching children to prayerfully listen. Teach meditative skills such as clearing your mind, focusing on the Lord, and listening. Additional Study: Use the Ten Commandments from the book of Exodus to illustrate the importance of loving God above all else, being truthful, honoring, not stealing, cheating, etc. Give relevant examples: not stealing from the internet, downloading movies or songs illegally. Copying information that does not belong to us in books without paying for it, keeping money we find instead of trying to find the owner, etc. Make a list with the children of ways we can learn from mistakes and way to prevent others from happening.
