St. Mary on the Hill November 27, 2016 Advent, a Time of Hope, Preparation and Joy Sunday November 27 is the first Sunday of Advent, a new liturgical year. Advent comes from Latin, Adventus, which means the coming, the arrival. Fr. Meza s Corner Advent, a Time of Hope In his play Waiting for Godot, Samuel Becket presents two characters, Vladimir and Estragon. Both of them are waiting for a man named Godot: VLADIMIR: We re waiting for Godot. ESTRAGON: (despairingly). Ah! You re sure it was here? VLADIMIR: What? ESTRAGON: That we were to wait. VLADIMIR: He said by the tree. It happens that Godot did not arrive that day. So they waited and stayed until the next day ESTRAGON: He should be here. VLADIMIR: He didn t say for sure he d come. ESTRAGON: And if he doesn t come? VLADIMIR: We ll come back tomorrow. ESTRAGON: And then the day after tomorrow. In the meantime a boy came to tell them that Mr. Godot would not arrive that day On the day after they waited but Godot did not arrive. So they waited but Mr. Godot did not arrive. They waited again Vladimir and Estragon represent the mentality of many people in our society who wait and work for things that do not endure and most likely will never arrive. People who put their hope in brilliant careers, many possessions and comforts, financial or social power, riches, etc At the sunset of their lives, they realized that most of them did not arrive. Contrary to Vladimir and Estragon, we as Christians do not wait endlessly and in vain, because we have a sure and only hope: God. A God who came already into the flesh. A God who comes every time that the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is celebrated. A God who will come at the end times to judge the living and the dead in order to call to himself those He deigns to inherit life eternal, for He assumed at his first coming the lowliness of human flesh, and opened for us the way to eternal salvation, that, when he comes again in glory and majesty and all is at last made manifest, we who watch for that day may inherit the great promise in which now we dare to hope. (Preface of Advent I) Advent, Time for Preparation As one of the Liturgical Laws (the General Instruction of the Roman Missal) reminds us: The liturgical color for Advent is purple, like Lent as both are seasons that prepare us. Both Advent and Lent include an element of penance an excellent time to prepare the way for the Lord, and make straight paths for Him. (Mk 1:3) To do so, many of our Catholic Churches organize a special day or evening for confessions. Here at St. Mary on the Hill we will have a special day for confessions on Tuesday, December 6, 2016. Take this opportunity to reconcile with the Lord and prepare your heart to celebrate his Nativity. Advent a Time of Expectant Joy Advent is a time of expectant joy. During his visit to our Parish, last month for Confirmation, our Bishop Gregory Hartmayer presented this example. In his book, The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, narrates the story of a Prince who comes to this earth from an asteroid. The tale is narrated by a pilot, who, stranded in the dessert, meets him and tries to understand his place of origin. During his tour around the earth the Little Prince discovers some animals and makes friends with them. One of them was a fox. However, to be his friend, he needed to be tamed. So he asked the Prince to do so day by day. Due to his busy schedule, he could not tell the fox the exact time of his daily arrival. However the fox was adamant to know the hour. On the second day the fox told him, It would have been better to come back at the same hour, said the fox. If, for example, you come at four o clock in the afternoon, then at three o clock I shall begin to be happy. I shall feel happier and happier as the hour advances. At four o clock, I shall already be worrying and jumping about. I shall show you how happy I am! But if you come at just any time, I shall never know at what hour my heart is to be ready to greet you. (The Little Prince) We all have experienced the pleasure of being happy in advance, prior to the meeting of a person whom we loved so much or whom we have not seen in years. Advent could be seen in that perspective. First, we should be happy in advance because we will celebrate the coming of the Lord during Christmas. Second, we should be happy in advance every time that we come to Mass, because we will have a real encounter with the Lord in the Most Holy Eucharist. Finally we should be happy in advance, because, if we follow Jesus and obey his commandments, at the end times He will call us to himself to share with him an everlasting glory. Advent is a time of hope, preparation and joy. Live this season of Advent in its fullness!

Covenant Care Adoptions provides a semiopen relationship between a birthmother and the adoptive family. This means that the birth mother chooses the family that will adopt her baby and has the opportunity to meet the family and receive yearly letters and pictures as her child grows up. This type of relationship honors the birth mother and allows for sharing the love of Jesus with her throughout the adoption process.
