SEP 2017 FROM THE DESK OF PASTOR GENE It s our ministry!!! I share two examples of congregations who have misunderstood who owns the ministry, the congregation or the pastor, and offer encouragement. First, the overarching observation is this: Pastors come and go, but congregations remain. We re at that point in the transition process where the inclination might be to say, Let s wait until the pastor arrives. No, we outlined our ministry in the Transition Process Report, and listed in our Ministry Site Profile (MSP) the characteristics we re seeking in the next regularly called pastor; it s our ministry, and we ll extend a call to someone to partner with us in forwarding our ministry. Based upon the information available to me (recall my article in last month s Crossbeams The truth as it occurs to me ), I m aware of two congregations who now find themselves directionless because their ministry was pastor-centric, i.e. they built their vision and ministry centered NOT upon the Spirit s working throughout them as a congregation, BUT upon the pastor. Now, since each of their pastors has gone elsewhere, they re struggling: in one case, the pastor chaired the congregation council throughout his entire ministry there for multiple decades; with his leaving, a leadership vacuum exists!!! In the other case, the pastor and one other member of the congregation possessed the vision for the congregation; now that both are NO longer there the one moved because of being relocated by the employer, and the pastor took a call elsewhere the congregation has yet to sense the direction of the Spirit s wishing them to go. Because both of these congregations chose for whatever reason(s) to entrust their ministry into the hands of just one or two persons, they find themselves struggling, a consequence that could have been avoided had they listened to the psalmist: Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help. When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish (Psa 146:3f.). The pastor departs; the plan perishes. WORSHIP 9:00 AM SCHOOL 10:30 AM All children Welcome! Fellowship Hour Following Worship Continued on page 2 Page 1

Pastor Gene...Continued from page 1, It s our ministry!!! We re now seeking a pastor to invite to partner with us in the pursuit of our ministry. Yes, we move the ministry forward now, making decisions, allocating resources, etc., following the Spirit s leading; when our next regularly called pastor arrives, the pastor s very first action is to catch up!!! Peace & Joy, Pastor Gene Attention all you creative crafty people. We need you to think of all of Trinity's past and on-going activities. Think: Christmas pageant, blessing of pets, vacation bible school, bell ringers, confirmation, Chrismons, past Christmas trees, food distribution, game nights, dinners, and on and on. Then, when you have an idea that you think you can illustrate, take a 12 inch cotton fabric square (from Lee B. or Carol M.) and go to work. Simple is fine. You can paint it, piece it, draw on it, color it (yes crayons work), applique it, or any combination you can think of. As long as it fits within an inch of the edges of the fabric (think an inch border all around). If you need help with your idea, feel free to ask. + Christian Symbol + THE CANDLE Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven. September 10, 2017 God s work. Our hands. Sunday -- our ELCA Dedicated Day of Service -- God s work. Our hands. Sunday, started in 2013 for the 25 th Anniversary of the ELCA, is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. The designated day of service is an extension of the important ministry our congregations already do. Watch for more information in the Sunday bulletin. This will be our 5 th year to wear our yellow GWOH t-shirts at congregation activity events. We encourage all to wear their yellow t-shirt to our worship service on Sunday, September 10 th. Council Business: Congratulations to Patti Risk and Mary Sletten. They were elected to fill the two Council vacancies until the next annual meeting. For current Council meeting minutes, don't forget to check the bulletin board next to the Pastor's Study. The recommended ELCA amendments were added to our Constitution. The updated Constitutions are available in the Narthex, and will be sent out by e-mail. The sections that were changed are highlighted in yellow. This updated Constitution will be voted on at the September 24 th Congregation meeting. If you have any questions about it, please feel free to call or e-mail me. Eric Sletten, Council Secretary Please remember to sign up for altar flowers. We have several Sunday s available. If Jesus Came Would you have to change your clothes Before you let Him in? Or hide away some world ly magazines, And put the Bibles where they'd been? Would you hide your world ly music, And put some hymn books out? C ould you let Jesus walk right in, Or would you rush about? And I wonder: If the Savior, Spent a day or two with you, Would you go right on doing, The things you always do? Would you go right on saying, The things you always say? Would life for you continue, As it does from day to day? Would you take Jesus with you, Every where you go? Or would you maybe change your plans, For just a day or so? Would you be glad to have Him, Meet your closest friends? Or would you hope they'd stay away, Until His visit ends? Would you be glad to have Him, Stay forever on and on? Or would you sigh with relief, When He at last was gone? It might be interesting to know, The things that you would do, If Jesus came in person, to spend some time with you. Author Unknown Page 3
