TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SUNDAY COLLECTION BASKET AUGUST 28, 2016 $ 9,140.00 AUGUST 30, 2015 $ 8,164.50 SEPTEMBER 4, 2016 First Reading: Wisdom 9:13-18b This reading acknowledges that people have had a difficult time attempting to know God's wishes. At times we have difficulty understanding the things that happen on earth. Therefore, learning of things in heaven would have been impossible, except that God sent us wisdom and the Holy Spirit to help us understand him. Second Reading: Philemon 9-10, 12-17 Paul writes to Philemon regarding Onesimus, a slave who ran away and encountered Paul. Although Paul wished Onesimus could remain with him, he did not want to violate Philemon's wishes. Paul asks that Philemon receives his friend Onesimus as a beloved brother, not as a slave. He closes by saying, "Welcome him as you would me." Gospel: Luke 14:25-33 Jesus warns people who wish to follow him that they must abandon everyone else first. A person calculates the amount of money needed to complete a project before they begin it. In the same way, Jesus warns these people to consider exactly what is involved before they make a commitment to follow him. ROCKLAND 9-11 MEMORIAL MASS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10TH AT 7:30 PM We invite everyone to please save the date for this year s Rockland County 9-11 Memorial Mass. Because this special mass is traditionally hosted by the Vicar/Dean, this year it will be held right here at Saint Aedan s Church. During the mass, we will pray aloud for all of our Rockland family members and friends who perished during the Attack on America, September 11, 2001. We will also pray for God s continued love and protection upon all those they left behind on that terrible day. Uniformed responders, both retired and still on the job, are invited to attend in uniform. Others may wish to wear shirts appropriate to one of the uniformed services. Following the mass, refreshments will be served in the parish hall. The Ladies Guild would welcome your help in providing refreshments for the hospitality table immediately following the mass. INTERFAITH COFFEE & CONVERSATION LOVING YOUR (RELIGIOUS) NEIGHBORS TODAY SUNDAY 4:00 PM HERE AT SAINT AEDAN S Want to better understand how your neighbors worship? SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17TH 12 NOON 3 PM CHURCH GROUNDS Food - Beverages Games Family Fun LABOR DAY - AN AMERICAN HOLIDAY Labor Day is a United States federal holiday which is observed on the first Monday in September. This year it happens to fall on September 5th. The first Labor Day was observed on August 26, 1878, in Boston, by the Central Labor Union of New York, the nation s first integrated major trade union. It became a federal holiday in 1894, when, following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshalls during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority. By unanimous vote, Congress passed a law making the day a national holiday some six days after the workers deaths. Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of summer. In the bygone years of high society, Labor Day was considered the last day of the year when it was fashionable for women to wear white. The day is often regarded as a day of rest and barbeques and parties. In U. S. sports, Labor Day marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons. For many school age boys and girls, Labor Day also marks the last day of freedom before returning to school. (Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) PARISH OFFICE HOLIDAY CLOSING St. Aedan s Parish Office will be closed on Monday, September 5th Labor Day Holiday HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY! MONTHLY PATRIOTIC ROSARY The Patriotic Rosary will be recited at St. Aedan s Church on Tuesday, September 6th at 7 P.M. There will be patriotic songs between each decade. ALL ARE INVITED!!!! This will be the 40th year of the Legion of Mary at St. Aedan s. MAY MARY, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH, SUPPORT US AND BE OUR PROTECTION ALWAYS! Take some time on that day to honor Mary as the woman giving her generous consent to God's plan for her. Mary, receive our gratitude by our prayers. May all who venerate you feel now your help and protection. Be ready to assist us when we pray to you and bring back to us the answers to our prayers. Amen. PARISH 50TH ANNIVERSARY ACTIVITIES We did our best to make sure that every currently registered individual and family in the parish received our recent parish-wide mailing. This is a very important parish family event and a time when we would like everyone to come together to celebrate a really important event in the history of our parish. A lot of work has been done by a lot of people to help ensure the success of our 50th celebration so we would really appreciate your support. What can you do? -Reserve some seats at the Gala Dinner Dance at the Hilton - October 21st. -Help us get to solicit sponsors and advertisers for our parish journal. Late registration will be accepted September 6-7-8. Students who register then will be able to begin the 2nd week of class. Registration cannot be accepted during class time the first week of class. For information or to register please call and leave a message at 735-2036. Messages will be returned the week of 9/6. Registration Forms are be available in the Rectory during business hours PARISH BLOOD DRIVE HUGE SUCCESS Our parish blood drive, held in the parish meeting room last Sunday, received a total of 53 units of blood, the highest number of donations in recent history. NY Blood Bank Account manager, Robin Friehling, noted that This was an incredibly difficult weekend for blood collections and the Saint Aedan blood drive was a star this past Sunday. 47 donated whole blood units and 3 donated double red cell units on the ALYX machines (each counts as 2) for a total of 53 units. The whole blood units are separated into 3 components (red cells, platelets and plasma) so the drive has provided 147 blood products which will touch the lives of patients in need. Many thanks to blood drive chairman Kieran McCormack and his hard working committee, Brian Cory, Beth Coyle, Kathy Carty, Gina Vittiello, Ellen McCormack and Coleen Miller. Further thanks to our PREP school boys and girls who helped us, Jack McCormack, John & Margaret Fogarty, Timmy Lotto, Timmy Clancy, Jack Michaelson, Julia Vittiello and Julia Gassler. Our grateful thanks to all who registered to donate the gift of life to our brothers and sisters in need. Well done! Whatsoever you do.that you do unto me! PARISH CONCERT DATE RESCHEDULED Originally scheduled for September 24th, the 50th Anniversary Concert date has been re-scheduled for Friday evening, November 4th at 7PM. Scheduling the concert for a Saturday has been the single biggest stumbling block in recruiting commitments from many of the individuals and groups we have been reaching out to. We sincerely wish this concert to be one of the highlights of our 50th Anniversary year. In our view, it is more important to re-schedule the date and provide a first class concert than stick with the original date and struggle along with a potentially disappointing program. Please note the re-scheduled date and time your personal calendars - FRIDAY EVENING NOVEMBER 4TH FROM 7 9 PM. PARISH FAMILY MASS RESUMES SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH 10 AM GRANDPARENTS DAY OBSERVANCE Now that our summer vacation schedule is over and our children are back in school, we will resume our 10:00 AM parish Family Mass each week. Although we welcome everyone to the Family Mass, we would like you to know that the preacher will be presenting a more child friendly, interactive homily which will most often entail the younger children being invited to come forward and sit around the steps of the sanctuary throughout the homily. Additionally, each week, different families will be invited to bring up the offertory gifts of bread and wine at the appropriate time. Next Sunday, as our nation pauses to honor all of our grandparents, we are hoping to see many of our grandparents attending mass with their grandchildren. Regardless of which mass you decide to attend, please remember to have our PREP school students stop by, following mass, to greet our priests and deacon and to hand in their mass cards. We greatly appreciate the patience and ongoing cooperation of our parents with this new procedure. Saint Aedan, pray for us! MONTHLY PRO-LIFE MASS There is a Pro Life Mass celebrated every 1st Monday night of the month at 7:30PM at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 128 Parrott Road in West Nyack. The next Pro Life Mass will be on Monday, September 5th.
