Padre s Corner August 5, 2018 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Memories of life with persons, places, and things enrich human existence while building a bridge that connects past and present with the future. Isolated from each other without the cohesive glue of faith renders them virtually meaningless. God must be the bonding agent, like a couple getting married on their wedding day promises. Manhattan author R.J. Palacio reflected in her book Wonder these observances: The things we do outlast our mortality. The things we do are like monuments that people build to honor heroes after they ve died. They re like the pyramids that the Egyptians built to honor the pharaohs. Only instead of being made in stone, they re made out of the memories people have of you. Recalled Emily Griffin in Something Borrowed : Songs and smells will bring you back to a moment in time more than anything else. It s amazing how much can be conjured with a few notes of a song or a solitary whiff of a room. A song you didn t even pay attention to at that time, a place that you didn t even know had a particular smell. Haruki Murakami in Kafka on the Shore writes: We re so caught up in our everyday lives that events of the past, like ancient stars that have burned out, are no longer in orbit around our minds. There are just too many things we have to think about every day, too many new things we have to learn. New styles, new information, new technology, new terminology... But still, no matter how much time passes, no matter what takes place in the interim, there are some things we can never assign to oblivion, memories we can never rub away. They remain with us forever, like a touchstone. Nearly fifty years ago the Lettermen recorded a song called Traces/Memories which in part sang these verses: Memories pressed between the pages of my mind. Memories sweetened through the ages just like wine. Quiet thoughts come floating down and settle softly to the ground. Like golden autumn leaves around my feet, I touch them and they burst apart with sweet memories. Faded photographs covered now with lines and creases, tickets torn in half memories in bits and pieces. A few more anecdotes that unite memories with the pursuit of wisdom in the scope of faith. Jim Nantz, sportscaster of the March Madness basketball tournament, commented this way about Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt the 98-year old cheerleader for the Loyola Chicago team who lost in the final four to Michigan on March 31: She s been really a great figure for a lot of people. The message of hope. We need hope. Her gentle spirit and her enthusiasm and support of that team goes way beyond that band of believers in that Loyola Chicago locker room. She s touched the whole nation. We ve had underdogs at this event before. This might be the best underdog story you can ever find. Sister Jean has elevated that to go beyond college basketball. Who can t fall in love with this story? To see this sweet soul, who prays before the games not only for her team, but for the other team, for the officials. A decade ago I received a signed photo by mail from this classy sportscaster. About learning from the wise voices of the past in broadcasting such as Jack Whitaker now at the age of 93 plus the late Pat Summerall, Chris Schenkel, Dick Enberg, Keith Jackson who died this past January 12, and Jim McKay he had this tribute of recollection about how he learned from these vocal masters of the past: Hopefully it s a more confident presentation, but hopefully it s still rooted in what I have circulating around in my head, these voices of my youth, that were my heroes, they still are. I hope I m a composite of some of these men we talked about... I feel them peering over my shoulder figuratively. I feel them watching. And hoping that I m framing a moment the way they would have. It s really important to me that I do them justice because I am a product of their world. They shaped me. Ed White played in the National Football League from 1969-1977 for the Minnesota Vikings at the old Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington (now the site of the Mall of America), and the San Diego Chargers from 1978-1985. A Southern Baptist of deep faith, with mostly Catholic teammates on the Vikings including legendary coach Bud Grant, White weathered not just the physical limitations post -career and the breast cancer diagnosis of his wife Joanne, but the death of his young daughter Amy after a head injury. He wrote me recently: I love spiritual connections. They are some of the priceless blessings. I was raised in a spiritual environment. I was so blessed... I am honored and know the power of prayer... I have had a very blessed spiritual journey with Christ being in the center. My mother was raised by an Irish Catholic mom from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Her father a Hungarian Jew from Richmond, Virginia... I was a lucky boy and the principles that God has set forth to live by have served me so well. Like Jim Nantz, Sister Jean, and Ed White we pay tribute to the wise voices of our past be it our families or other rational forces such as teacher mentors or classic books including the Word of God in the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible. Next week a 1956 letter from Senator John F. Kennedy about the wise beginnings of America. God wisen us up. Father Bill

TODAY EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15 The Israelites complain that Moses led them to the desert and there is no food for them there. Then the Lord told Moses he would rain down bread from heaven so the people might know that AI, the Lord, am your God.@ God did as he had promised and in the morning the people found the bread that he had given them. Second Reading: Ephesians 4:17, 20-24 Paul tells the Ephesians that they must give up their old way of life and live in accordance with the truth that spiritual way of thinking, and to remember that they are made in God s image and act accordingly. Gospel: John 6:24-35 The people Jesus had fed on five loaves of bread follow him, and Jesus tells them they should not be looking for perishable food, but for spiritual food. The people want a sign that they should believe in him. He explains that he is the bread of life, and anyone who believes will not experience hunger or thirst. The people did not fully understand that he was speaking in the spiritual sense, and not of actual food.
