The glory of God is not the self-glorification of a supreme monad; it is the glory of perfect love forever poured out and forever received within the being of the Triune God. Lesslie Newbigin PUBLIC WORSHIP JANUARY 28, 2018 THE WORD CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 64:10 Let the righteous one rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in him! Let all the upright in heart exult!

May Jesus Christ Be Praised Text: Common Book of Prayer Music: Benjamin Wilkinson Used by Permission Does sadness fill my mind? A solace here I find; Or fades my earthly bliss? My comfort still is this: May Jesus Christ be praised! May Jesus Christ be praised! Be this, while life is mine, my love, my song divine: May Jesus Christ be praised! May Jesus Christ be praised! My God, the Savior, reigns! May Jesus Christ be praised!

PRAYER OF INVOCATION He is risen! He is risen indeed! Let us pray CALL TO CONFESSION OF SIN 1 Timothy 1:5 The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. CONFESSION OF SIN O Father, relieve our consciences, now and in the hour of our death, from the terror of our guilt and the fear of your judgment. Let your peace come into our hearts that we may await your judgment with joy. Be not severe in your judgment of us, or no one will be found righteous. Teach us, dear Father, not to trust or find comfort in our own merits or good works. But teach us to venture and resign ourselves faithfully and firmly to your infinite mercy. In the same manner, let us not lose courage because of our guilty and sinful lives. Let us regard your mercy as higher and broader and stronger than all our being. Amen. (Silent confession) ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS 1 Timothy 1:15 Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. May the peace of Christ be with you. And also with you! OFFERING 2 Corinthians 8:7-9 As you excel in everything in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you see that you excel in this act of grace also. I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow! Praise him, all creatures here below! Praise him above, ye heavenly host! Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 49:1-3 1 Listen to me, O coastlands, and give attention, you peoples from afar. The LORD called me from the womb, from the body of my mother he named my name. 2 He made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow; in his quiver he hid me away. 3 And he said to me, You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. O Christ, begotten of the Father before all time, born in a stable at Bethlehem, may your church be a sign of hope and glory. Lord, have mercy. O Christ, truly risen from the dead, our Alpha and Omega, may the whole world live in peace and justice, according to Your will. Lord, have mercy. O Christ, truly God and truly human, born to a people in fulfillment of promise, fulfill the needs and desires of those who are sick or sorrowful. Lord, have mercy. All powerful and unseen God, the coming of your light into our world has brightened weary hearts with peace. Teach us to proclaim the good news of your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. God, teach us to pray as your Son taught His disciples, saying Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Come, Holy Ghost Text: Rhabanus Maurus (A.D. 776-856); chorus by Ray Mills (2005) Music: Bruce Benedict & Ray Mills 2006 Cardiphonia Music, 2006 Raymond G. Mills O Holy Ghost, through thee alone know we the Father and the Son; be this our firm, unchanging creed, that thou dost from them both proceed, that thou dost from them both proceed. (Chorus x2) Praise we the Lord, Father and Son, and Holy Spirit with them one; and may the Son on us bestow all gifts that from the Spirit flow, all gifts that from the Spirit flow. (Chorus x2)

Holy God, We Praise Your Name Text and Music: based on the Te Deum, ca. 4 th c. arr. Chip Ueltschey

GOSPEL READING John 13:31-38 When he had gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, Where I am going you cannot come. 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. 36 Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus answered him, Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward. 37 Peter said to him, Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you. 38 Jesus answered, Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times. The Gospel of Jesus Christ. Praise be to you, O Christ! SERMON A New Commandment (Rev. Eric Costa)

THE UPPER ROOM CONFESSION OF FAITH The Apostles Creed What do you believe? I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. * The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. (Greet one another with the words, The peace of Christ be with you. ) INVITATION TO THE LORD S TABLE AND PRAYER WORDS OF INSTITUTION 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 THE MYSTERIUM FIDEI 1 Corinthians 11:26; 5:7-8 Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. The gifts of God for the people of God. GIVING OF THE BREAD AND CUP (All who confess faith in Jesus Christ may partake of this Sacrament: baptized members of a congregation that proclaims the Gospel, who are at peace with God and with their brothers and sisters in Christ, and who seek God s grace to live more faithfully for him in this world. Please come forward after the musicians. The glasses on your right contain grape juice for those who do not want wine. There are gluten-free crackers on the table. An Elder is available for prayer upon request [James 5:13-16].) * When the Creed states that Jesus descended into hell, we understand it to mean that he suffered the holy wrath of God for the sins of his people. Or, universal.

Of The Father s Love Begotten Text: Aurelius Clemens Prudentius, 348-413 Music: Divinum Mysterium, 11 th c.

The Lamb Has Overcome Music and Lyrics: Luke Morton 2011 Cardiphonia Music The table now is spread, the table now is spread; the wine and bread, broken body and blood shed, the table now is spread. The day is drawing near, the day is drawing near; he shall appear and wipe away each tear, the day is drawing near! Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, glory be unto his name! Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, glory be unto his name! (Repeat Chorus)

BENEDICTION 2 John 3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father s Son, in truth and love. ~ Remember: every gathering is an opportunity to invite a friend, to introduce people to the Christcentered community and life of the church! For information about our regular meetings like home groups, bible studies for men and women, and more, please visit ascensionpc.org/calendar. After Worship Please stay a while and join us for coffee and conversation. Around 11:45am we start Sunday School kids will meet in the sanctuary before going to their classes, and adults will meet in the fellowship hall for Sermon Discussion (young children are welcome to accompany their parents). Monthly Men s Breakfast 7:30am Sat., Feb. 3 at the Costa home (1890 SE Maple Street). We will continue a series of discussions based on the Lord s Prayer. (Check applyingthegospel.com this week for the blog post we ll discuss together.) RSVP and let Eric know what part of the meal you ll bring, and if you ll have a friend with you (rev.eric.costa@gmail.com). Mercy Sunday On the first Sunday of each month (Feb. 4) we participate together in a couple different ministries of mercy and compassion. It s good for us to cultivate regular habits like these so that generosity and helping others become second-nature to us and to our children Alms These gifts go toward a fund the deacons use to meet urgent needs among congregants and in the community as we are made aware of them. Food pantry The elementary school in the church s neighborhood, W. L. Henry, has many families who rely on help like this. To sign up, contact Jerilee Costa: jerilee.costa@gmail.com.
