P R O V I D E N C E P R E S B Y T E R I A N C H U R C H Order of Worship J A N U A R Y 2 7 T H, 2 0 1 3 WELCOME PRELUDE CALL TO WORSHIP* from Psalm 89.5-8, 14-15 Minister: The heavens praise your wonders, O LORD, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones. For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings? All: In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. O LORD God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you. Minister: Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you. All: Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD. They rejoice in your name all day long; they exult in your righteousness. For you are their glory and strength, and by your favor you exalt our horn. H YMNS* Praise, My Soul, The King of Heaven! LAUDA ANIMA Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven; to His feet your tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, evermore His praises sing: Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the everlasting King. Fatherlike, He tends and spares us; well our feeble frame He knows. In His hands He gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes. Alleluia! Alleluia! Widely as His mercy flows. Angels, help us to adore Him; you behold Him face to face; Sun and moon, bow down before Him, dwellers all in time and space. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise with us the God of grace. Our God, Our Help in Ages Past ST. ANNE Our God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home. Under the shadow of your throne your saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is your arm alone, and our defense is sure. A thousand ages in Thy sight are like an evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun. Our God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, Be Thou our guard while troubles last, and our eternal home.

PRAYER OF I NVOCATION AND ADORATION* Rev. Ronnie Rowe CONFESSION OF FAITH based on James 1.2-4 Minister: How are Christians to view trials and hardship? All: Christians are to consider it pure joy whenever we face trials of many kinds, because we know that the testing of our faith develops perseverance. And perseverance must finish its work so that we may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. SONG OF PRAISE Jesus is Our King PREBBLE AND CLARK Chorus: Alleluia! Alleluia! Opening our hearts to Him, Singing Alleluia! Alleluia! Jesus is our King! Create in us, O God, a humble heart that sets us free To proclaim the wondrous majesty of our Father in heaven. Chorus We bear the name of Christ, justified we meet with Him. His words and presence calm our fear, revealing God our Father here. Chorus Let kindred voices join, honoring the Lamb of God Who teaches us by bread and wine the myst ry of His body. Chorus Pour out your spirit on us, empowering us to live as one, To carry your redeeming love to a world enslaved by sin. Chorus PUBLIC CONFESSION OF SIN " Minister: Let us confess our sins before our righteous and holy God. All: Father, you have called us your people, and you have given us a new heart made alive by Your Spirit. You have freed us from bondage to sin, yet, we do not live as a free people. We continue to live as people who do not recognize your rule. Forgive us for the ways in which we have both willfully refused and carelessly neglected to submit our bodies to Your service. Grant us grace, through your Spirit, to live as a free people, a people who love You and who keep Your commandments. We ask you grant this for Jesus sake. Amen. PRIVATE CONFESSION OF SIN ASSURANCE OF PARDON Romans 8:1-2 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free from the law of sin and death. I NTERCESSORY AND OFFERTORY PRAYER Ruling Elder, Mr. Howard Luber two

MUSICAL OFFERING SCRIPTURE READING* Hebrews 12.1-17 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. 4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives." 7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. 12 Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. 14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no "root of bitterness" springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; 16 that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears. SERMON The Loving Hand of Discipline Rev. David Rea H YMN OF RESPONSE* Love Divine, All Loves Excelling BEECHER Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven to earth come down; Fix in us thy humble dwelling; all thy faithful mercies crown! Jesus, Thou art all compassion, pure unbounded love Thou art; Visit us with Thy salvation; enter every trembling heart. Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit, into every troubled breast! Let us all in Thee inherit; let us find that second rest. Take away our bent to sinning; Alpha and Omega be; End of faith, as its Beginning, set our hearts at liberty. Finish, then, Thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be. Let us see Thy great salvation perfectly restored in Thee; Changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before Thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise WORDS OF I NSTITUTION Rev. Rob Hamby three

T HE LORD S T ABLE All those who trust in Christ alone for their salvation, are baptized, and belong to a Bible believing church are invited to partake of the Lord s Supper together, feeding on the grace of God by faith. If you have not put your trust in Christ, please allow the elements to pass you by and take this opportunity to meditate on the meaning of the Gospel. A word to parents: Baptized children are invited to the table after they have made a profession of faith and been received as communing members by the Session of the church to which their parents belong. Please hold the bread, and we will partake together. Please drink the cup as you receive it. The outer ring is grape juice and the inner rings are wine. During the bread My Jesus, I Love Thee CARITAS My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine; For thee all the follies of sin I resign. My gracious Redeemer, my Saviour art thou; If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now. I love thee because thou hast first loved me, And purchased my pardon on Calvary's tree. I love thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow; If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now. I'll love thee in life, I will love thee in death; And praise thee as long as thou lendest me breath; And say, when the death-dew lies cold on my brow: If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now. During the cup Instrumental PRAYER OF T HANKSGIVING CLOSING H YMN* All Praise to Christ ENGELBERG All praise to Christ, our Lord and King divine, Yielding his glory in his love s design, That in our darkened hearts his grace might shine: Alleluia! Christ came to us in lowliness of thought; By him the outcast and the poor were sought, And by his death was our redemption bought: Alleluia! And so we see in God s great purpose how Christ has been raised above all creatures now, And at his name shall every nation bow: Alleluia! BENEDICTION* Minister: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all, now and forever!. four

Spring Sunday School Classes The Book of Acts: How the Power of the Gospel Rocks Our World In this sequel to Luke s Gospel, a handful of ordinary Christians in Jerusalem have come out of hiding to boldly share the gospel, newly empowered by the Spirit of Christ. These simple, uneducated believers turned the world upside down (Acts 17:6) in less than 30 years, as the gospel spread throughout the Roman Empire. Join us as we study this thrilling account of the church s beginnings, which provides insights into its nature, message and purpose, and their implications for us as its members. Taught by Dave Nelson in room 136. The Letter of Paul to the Galatians: "No Other Gospel" In the book of Galatians, Paul warns the church against deserting Christ and turning to a different Gospel than the one offered to us in Christ. Paul's warning continues to be relevant for us today. Like the Galatians, we tend to lose our way and build our lives on counterfeit gospels that promise us freedom but leave us enslaved. Taught by Rob Hamby in Room 135. six

Ladies Spring Bible Studies Nehemiah: Monday Nights, 7:30 pm ANNOUNCEMENTS We are studying Nehemiah this is a great story, loaded with excitement, intrigue and practical Biblical wisdom! All women are invited to join us as we do this 9 week study together. Taught by Trish Luber at the church building. Questions? contact Trish at htluber@tx.rr.com. Windows to the Heart: A Study of Selected Psalms: Wednesday Mornings, 9:30-11am All women are invited to join us for A Study of Selected Psalms on Wednesdays taught by Alyson Averitt at the church building. Childcare provided for ages 0-6, with a lesson for ages 2 and up. Please let Alyson know if you plan to attend so that she can get you a study folder. Men s Spring Bible Studies A Praying Life taught by Rob Hamby, Wednesdays at PPC, 7am If we are honest, we must acknowledge that we pray very little. When we do pray, we tend to turn prayer into some kind of religious performance or protocol to impress God and those around us. As a result, we miss out on the rich grace and fellowship of our Heavenly Father given to us through prayer. If you want to grow in the joy and power of a praying life, this study is for you. Identifying and Confronting the Causes of Discouragement and Decline in the Christian Lifetaught by Ronnie Rowe, Thursdays at PPC, 7pm In this series we will study select passages of Scripture that address the causes of and remedies for discouragement and decline in the Christian life. Many of these lessons will be adapted from the book, Spiritual Depression: It' s Causes and Cure by David Martyn Lloyd- Jones. The Book of Exodus taught by David Rea, Fridays at PPC, 7am The book of Exodus is about a journey: a journey out of Egypt, but more particularly a journey from a land where God's power, sovereignty and continuing interest in His people could be easily questioned, to a place where God dwelt in the midst of his people. Exodus describes God's power, His redemption of His people, His covenant requirements at Sinai, and the rules of His worship. Please join us in our study of this wonderful book.
