January 2017 1320 Arbor Drive Email: decaturfbc@comcast.net 217-875-8034 Website: www.decaturfbc.com Volume 13 Who doesn t like new stuff? No one. It seems we all like the smell of a new car, the feeling of new hair cut and looking good, freshly baked bread, crisp new sheets on the bed, the first paragraph of a brand spanking new novel filled with potential, going to a newly released big budget movie, the first bite of good hot soup on a cold day, a gift that was just unwrapped and seen for the first time, and the new year. Yes, it is time for each of us to get used to writing 2017 now. I feel like I just got used to writing 2016. For some with new comes possibility, hope for something better, fresh potential, new opportunities, and the idea of leaving some baggage behind once and for all. For others, with new comes worry, tension, stress, doubt, and a fear of the unknown. Where do you fit when it comes to anticipating the new year? Jesus came to make things new. In 2 Corinthians 5:17 we read these words: If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! God didn t like the status quo so he sent His son to change the world, make it new. In fact, this newness brought to us when Jesus came the first time, will be completed when Jesus comes the second time. Revelation 21:5 reads: He who was seated on the throne said, I am making everything new! New doesn t mean we throw out all the old; it means we learn from the old, grow from the old, but don t live in the old. 2017 will have in it much we are familiar with as well as much we might experience for the first time. In the spring the same trees will be there, but the leaves are all new. In the summer the hot sun will shine like it always has but the day will be new. Some new won t be so much fun. New health problems. New challenges. Etc. We will experience the new whether we like it or not. So let me suggest the following. As you prepare for whatever new is coming your way please prayerfully consider your response to the new. Be a person filled with thankfulness and gratitude. Smile more. Gripe less. Don t gossip at all. Be fierce in your determination to let your light shine so that others might see more than just you --- that they might see your faith in Jesus Christ. Love other people by serving them before you serve yourself. Laugh often. Choose to let go of those around you who are negative. Find times of good, solid rest. Encourage others with a kind word. Remove some busyness that has no eternal value and replace it with joyful activities that refresh and renew your faith and/or the faith of another. 2017 can be a better year maybe even your best year ever. Together let s work on what that means by working on our love for Jesus Christ and others. And in the process may the many who are forgotten and broken experience the love of Christ. 1
Bench Notes A New Year has begun! Once again, in the afterglow of Christmas celebration, we reflect upon the year that has gone and ponder about the one which has just started. Many of us make the dreaded New Year s resolutions: we re going to eat healthier, reduce our personal debt, spend more time with our families, etc. and those are all good things. It s always good to have a goal or vision to work toward. Without a vision, a plan or resolution, it s likely that we would sense any direction or accomplishment in our lives. But what are the areas in our lives that need attention? If we were having a conversation with God, what would He say to us? Maybe some of the following: Spend some time with Me every day. I miss being with you. I love all the people that aggravate you just as much as I love you. Show My love to them. Always honor My Name in your speech. Use your time in ways that nurture and refresh your soul. Look around and above you and take in the glory of everything I have made for you. In all your ways, acknowledge Me. As we get a clean slate, a new beginning, a fresh start whatever you want to call it ask the Lord to show you the things He wants you to do for Him. He will guide you, give encouragement and show you the path that He already has prepared for you. It s a New Year new opportunities to serve God and to grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ. God be with us all in our personal journeys and as we journey together as the family at First Baptist Church. May 2017 be full of our obedience to the Lord and the blessings He has for us! On other notes Many thanks to our volunteers who served nearly 1000 people at the four concerts in December. We received many words of thanks from those who attended both the noontime as well as our evening concerts. Several sent notes to the congregation as well. They loved the music and the food and fellowship equally. We hope the worship services and special music during Advent and Christmas was a blessing to you. The Sanctuary Choir worked hard preparing Invitation to a Miracle and they gave us a wonderfully worshipful performance of it. Thanks to the Carillon Bell Choir as well for their ministry to us and to the Decatur community. Looking forward to 2017, we have places for singers and ringers in both choirs. Please speak to me if you are interested in joining the Sanctuary Choir (singing) or would like to ring handbells/chimes with Carillon Bell Choir. January 1 marks the beginning of my 29 th year as your Minister of Music. (Happy birthday, Lindsey and Zach Gray I remember going to your 2 nd birthday party!) Arriving in Decatur right after Christmas and during the WORST snow storm of the year, Dr. Jim McIntosh insisted that I begin on Sunday, January 1, 1989 even before I had much time to unpack or settle in. Reflecting upon our shared history, I m grateful for each of you for your faithfulness to our Lord and for the kindnesses you have given. But it s not about looking back it s about embracing what God has in store for us in the future. And I am grateful to be on that journey with you! Gracious God, our Heavenly Father, for the year that has been, we give You our thanks. You have held us in Your hands and led us in the way You had designed. As we begin a new season, help us to follow You even more closely so that Your perfect will would be accomplished both in our lives and in Your Church. We ask this in Jesus name, amen. Blessings and Happy New Year, Michael Waltenberger 2

NEW VOLUNTEER BOARD The greatest among us are those who serve others. Matthew 23:11. We hope to make it as convenient as possible for you to know what areas of service you could consider. Therefore, we now have a volunteer board up near the cloak room. While not all volunteer opportunities will be on the board, we will do our best to keep it up to date. Please check it out regularly and see if there is something you might be interested in. Your church, your community, and you will be blessed when you choose to serve the Lord by volunteering your time. 4
