From the Pastor.... Two hundred years ago this December a parish priest in a small village in Austria had a problem. The priest was Father Joseph Mohr and the organ in his church was not working. History doesn t tell us exactly what the problem was, some legends say that mice had eaten through the billows, others that a flood had caused rusting in the pipes. Whatever the case, there was no organ and that presented a problem for the Christmas Eve service. Father Mohr had written a Christmas poem and thought maybe it could be set to music for a guitar. So he went to his friend Franz Cruber, a school teacher and organist and enlisted him in the project. As a result of their collaboration the church in that small village heard Mohr and the choir accompanied by a guitar singing Silent Night, Holy Night. For the last two hundred years that beloved carol has been a highlight of Christmas worship services all over the world. It is heard on the radio, TV, in stores and everywhere you can imagine. I even saw a couple dancing to it in one of the Hallmark Christmas movies. I suspect though, the way this carol is dearest to us is when we sing it in the glow of candle light on Christmas Eve. I have been doing that about as long as I can remember, and it has not gotten old and I imagine it is the same for many of you. There is something about that moment gathered together in the warmth of the candle light singing those familiar words to that lovely tune that seems to bring it all home. Let us give thanks to those who came before us like Mohr and Gruber who gave us that beautiful carol for 200 years. But more than that let us give thanks to the God who entered into our lost and sinful world in stable in Bethlehem. Let us give thanks for the truth that makes Silent Night meaningful, the truth that Christ our Savior is born. May you have a blessed Christmas, Pastor Terrill Thank You! On November 4th I received a wonderful surprise during worship. The basket filled with cards and notes of appreciation was extremely touching. It was a reminder of how fortunate I am to be your pastor and what a blessing the last 16 years have been. Thank you. You made my day! May God Bless You! Pastors Terrill and Sara 2
