OUR LADY OF CANVEY & ENGLISH MARTYRS 224 Long Road, Canvey Island, Essex SS8 0JS www.ourladyofcanvey.org Parish Priest: Fr Eamonn Power Email: ourladyofcanvey@gmail.com Tel.: 01268 682599 Presbytery Tel.: 01268 680265 Office Hours: Monday-Friday 9.30-2.00pm Charity No 234092 Rejoice! Lord is nigh! Dear friends in Christ #this weekend we reach the 4 th and final Sunday of Advent, a very short Advent this year, with Christmas Day falling on Tuesday! Today we hear the episode of the Visitation, where Our Lady sets out to visit her elderly cousin Elizabeth and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, proclaims, Blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled. So an encounter with Our Lady leads directly to an encounter with the Holy Spirit. So, with Christmas being so close let us ask her to pray for us; Our Lady, Spouse of the Holy Spirit, pray for us A happy and Blessed Christmas to all By the time most of you read this my friends we will only be a couple of days away from the great celebration of the Birth of Jesus, an event that was to change the whole course of human history. We remember the words of the gospel of Saint John in the Prologue, The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Can we imagine the immensity of this Divine love? Let us all take time to go to the crib and meditate, even very briefly, on the incredible love of God revealed in Jesus. In the meantime I wish you all a very blessed celebration of the Lord s birth. Unto us a child is born; unto us a son us given. And the government will be upon his shoulder. And his name will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God Everlasting Father Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9, 6-7) Extra opportunities for Confession I will be available after both Masses this weekend and also after Mass on Monday morning for anyone who might want Confession. Diocesan Vision and Parish meeting AS we know my friends, the Diocese recently issued its document regarding provision for the future. We will have a parish meeting about the implications of this very soon. But my friends, please do not become anxious about any of this. A good starting point might be to have a public screening of the Bishop s video, even though this is freely available online, have a discussion afterwards. I think the best time for this to happen would be straight after the Sunday morning Mass and, God willing, we can have a public viewing of the Bishop s video. The date set is the 13 th of January. In the meantime, we once again pay heed to the advice of Saint Pio, pray, hope and don t worry. God Bless you all, Fr Eamonn

Questions of the Catholic Faith My friends, the days around Christmas, both immediately before and after, are especially grace-filled and present a wonderful opportunity to get closer to Jesus in prayer, especially through the intercession of his Mother, Mary. Let us all make an extra effort to thank Mary for what she has done in agreeing to conceive and give birth to the Son of God and let us all make some extra time for prayer. So:- How is Abraham a model or prayer? Abraham is a model of prayer because he walked in the presence of God, heard and obeyed him. His prayer was a battle of faith because he continued to believe in the fidelity of God even in times of trial. Besides, after having received in his own tent the visit of the Lord who confided his plan to him, Abraham dared to intercede for sinners with bold confidence. How does Moses pray? The prayer of Moses was typical of contemplative prayer. God, who called to Moses from the burning bush, lingered in conversations with him often and at length, "face to face, like a man with his friend" (Exodus 33:11). In this intimacy with God, Moses attained the strength to intercede tenaciously for this people: his prayer thus prefigured the intercession of the one mediator, Christ Jesus. What is the plan of God for man? God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life. In the fullness of time, God the Father sent his Son as the Redeemer and Saviour of mankind, fallen into sin, thus calling all into his Church and, through the work of the Holy Spirit, making them adopted children and heirs of his eternal happiness. You are great, O Lord, and greatly to be praised [...] You have made us for yourself and our heart is restless until it rests in you. (Saint Augustine) Very happy Hammers! My friends, I m getting spells of dizziness and confusion 4 wins on the spin! Watford at home this weekend, will they make it 5?
