Christ the King Lutheran Church 111 West Magnolia Road Salina, Kansas 67401 (785) 827-7492 ctklcsecretary@sbcglobal.net www.ctksalina.org Pastor Dennis Kootz, Vacancy Pastor The King Shall Come to Bring Us Joy THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT December 16, 2018 8:00 a.m.

MISSION STATEMENT: The purpose of Christ the King is to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people and to make them disciples of Jesus. Welcome: We are pleased that you are here to join us in worship today. We pray that our time together in God s word assures you that you are loved by God and your sins are forgiven because of Jesus Christ s life, death, and resurrection. If you are visiting with us today and we can be of any assistance to you, please let us know. Record of Attendance: We ask that all who are worshipping with us today would honor us by giving us a record of your attendance. Please fill out the blue card and then hand it to the center aisle. Prayer Request: If you have any prayer requests, please place them on an attendance card. If you would like your request included in the prayers today, please inform one of the ushers and they will inform Pastor. Children are always welcome in the worship service. At Christ the King we believe that it is important for the whole family to worship together whenever possible. In order to assist you and for your comfort, we have a room just off the sanctuary that has a one-way glass, and we also have a nursery. If one of these areas would be helpful to you the usher will be happy to assist you. Altar flowers are given to the Glory of God by Hank Boyer in memory of her husband Dean. Order of Worship: Creative Worship

As We Gather: Rejoice in the Lord always! may seem like quite the daunting task in today s world. Yes, there are moments of joy, but there are also moments of tragedy and devastation. It is not possible to be always joyful. But rejoicing is not a task that we have to add to our todo list. And we are not called to rejoice in everything always. We are called to rejoice in the Lord always. The God who rejoices over us with gladness and calms us with His love brings us into a relationship with Him that is filled with rejoicing at His presence and providence. LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES WELCOME & GREETING CHIMES PREPARATION OPENING HYMN The Advent of Our King LSB 331 1 The advent of our King Our prayers must now employ, And we must hymns of welcome sing In strains of holy joy. 2 The everlasting Son Incarnate deigns to be, Himself a servant s form puts on To set His servants free. 3 O Zion s daughter, rise To meet your lowly King, Nor let your faithless heart despise The peace He comes to bring.

4 As judge, on clouds of light, He soon will come again And His true members all unite With Him in heav n to reign. 5 Before the dawning day Let sin s dark deeds be gone, The sinful self be put away, The new self now put on. 6 All glory to the Son, Who comes to set us free, With Father, Spirit, ever one Through all eternity. Public domain INVOCATION Leader: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. OPENING SENTENCES Leader: Alleluia! Christ is coming soon! People: He is coming soon indeed! Alleluia! Leader: Rejoice in the Lord always! People: For He will rejoice over us with gladness. Leader: Again, I say, rejoice! People: He will quiet us with His love.

Leader: Steadfast love and faithfulness meet. People: Righteousness and peace kiss each other. Leader: In Christ, the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, People: the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear. Leader: In Christ, the dead are raised up, People: and the poor have the good news preached to them. Leader: Alleluia! Christ is coming soon! People: He is coming soon indeed! Alleluia! LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH Leader: On the four Sundays in Advent, we light a new candle each week. We mark the four candles with these four words: hope, peace, joy, and love. Jesus Christ is the hope of the nations. People: We wait for the Lord, and in His Word do we hope. Leader: Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace. People: We wait for the Lord, and in His Word do we rest. Leader: Jesus Christ is the source of all joy. People: We wait for the Lord, and in His Word do we rejoice. HYMN The King Shall Come to Bring Us Joy The King shall come to bring us joy, To silence all our hate. He comes in power to destroy Both sin and Satan s weight. (Tune: The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns)

We light this candle and rejoice That God has sent His Son! We pray and praise and raise our voice With thanks for all He s done. Text: Andrew R. Jones. Copyright 2018 Concordia Publishing House. [Permission is granted to reproduce this text for use December 2, 2018 March 3, 2019.] CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (Psalm 85:2) Leader: In the season of Advent, we prepare for Jesus to come. While today is a celebration of joy, we know that on our own, we would be entirely devoid of joy. Without Christ s intervention and incarnation, we would be lost in torment forever. We approach God in reverence, mindful of how unworthy we are to be in God s presence. (Silence for reflection.) Leader: Heavenly Father, People: we confess that we have doubted Your Son and His power. We have been filled with anxiety and stress. Revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You. Leader: The Lord God is in Your midst, the mighty One who will save. In Christ s death and resurrection, God withdrew His wrath and put away His burning anger. He rejoices over you with singing and quiets your anxious hearts by His love. Through Jesus' death and resurrection He has forgiven us all. People: Amen. You forgave the iniquity of Your people; You covered all their sin.

WORD INTROIT (Spoken) (Psalm 146:5 8; antiphon: Philippians 4:4) People: Rejoice in the Lord always;* again I will say, Rejoice. Blessèd is he whose help is the God of Jacob,* whose hope is in the LORD his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them,* who keeps faith for- ever; who executes justice for the oppressed,* who gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets the prisoners free; the LORD opens the eyes of the blind.* The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the be- ginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. Rejoice in the Lord always;* again I will say, Rejoice. SALUTATION Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY Leader: Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, we implore You to hear our prayers and to lighten the darkness of our hearts by Your gracious visitation; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People: Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Zephaniah 3:14 20 (The Lord will rejoice over you with gladness.) 14 Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem! 15 The LORD has taken away the judgments against you; he has cleared away your enemies. The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; you shall never again fear evil. 16 On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Fear not, O Zion; let not your hands grow weak. 17 The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. 18 I will gather those of you who mourn for the festival, so that you will no longer suffer reproach. 19 Behold, at that time I will deal with all your oppressors. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. 20 At that time I will bring you in, at the time when I gather you together; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the LORD. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE Philippians 4:4 7 (Rejoice in the Lord always.) 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. VERSE (Matthew 11:10b) People: Alleluia. Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You. Alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL Luke 7:18 35 ( The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. ) Leader: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the seventh chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord. 18 The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, 19 calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another? 20 And when the men had come to him, they said, John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another? 21 In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight. 22 And he answered them, Go and tell John what you have seen

and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. 23 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me. 24 When John s messengers had gone, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings courts. 26 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you. 28 I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. 29 (When all the people heard this, and the tax collectors too, they declared God just, having been baptized with the baptism of John, 30 but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.) 31 To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep. 33 For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, He has a demon. 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners! 35 Yet wisdom is justified by all her children. Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ.

HYMN OF THE DAY Hark! A Thrilling Voice Is Sounding LSB 345 1 Hark! A thrilling voice is sounding! Christ is near, we hear it say. Cast away the works of darkness, All you children of the day! 2 Startled at the solemn warning, Let the earthbound soul arise; Christ, its sun, all sloth dispelling, Shines upon the morning skies. 3 See, the Lamb, so long expected, Comes with pardon down from heav n. Let us haste, with tears of sorrow, One and all, to be forgiv n; 4 So, when next He comes in glory And the world is wrapped in fear, He will shield us with His mercy And with words of love draw near. 5 Honor, glory, might, dominion To the Father and the Son With the ever-living Spirit While eternal ages run! Public domain MESSAGE Chris Lawrenz (Elder) Shut Down the Shame Zephaniah 3:19b

APOSTLES' CREED People: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. WE PRAISE GOD WITH OUR OFFERING OFFERTORY Let the Vineyards Be Fruitful LSB 955 1 Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord, And fill to the brim our cup of blessing. Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, That we may be fed with the bread of life. Gather the hopes and the dreams of all; Unite them with the prayers we offer now. Grace our table with Your presence, and give us A foretaste of the feast to come. 1978 Lutheran Book of Worship. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License.NET, no. 100012693.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Leader: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Dear heavenly Father, as we wait for the return of Christ, we often grow impatient. We are tempted to disdain our families, dismiss our friends, and deny our neighbors what they need. Our hearts are often far from joy, but we pray that You would teach us to rejoice in the Lord always! People: Again I will say, rejoice! Leader: Lord, in the midst of our rejoicing there is also sadness and struggle. Some among us are sick, injured, and recovering. [Today we pray for...] Provide them with healing and calm their troubled hearts. In the midst of their suffering, teach them to rejoice in the Lord always! People: Again I will say, rejoice! Leader: Lord, it is most challenging to rejoice when we are surrounded by death. Comfort those who grieve and mourn the death of loved ones. [Today we remember the families and friends of...] Place the hope of resurrection before their eyes. Remind them that in paradise we will all rejoice in the Lord always! People: Again I will say, rejoice! Leader: Lord, we thank You for the times rejoicing is common in our lives. [Today we rejoice with...] Grant that their rejoicing lead us all to rejoice in the Lord always! People: Again I will say, rejoice! Leader: Lord, many are struggling with loneliness, especially at this time of year. Inspire Your Church to reach out in friendship and love to those who need it, that together we all rejoice in the Lord always! People: Again I will say, rejoice!

Leader: Into Your hands, Lord Jesus, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your ever-present mercy. People: Amen. LORD S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9 13) People: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. BENEDICTION (Numbers 6:24 26) Leader: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. People: Amen. CLOSING HYMN Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness LSB 849 1 Praise the One who breaks the darkness With a liberating light; Praise the One who frees the pris ners, Turning blindness into sight. Praise the One who preached the Gospel, Healing ev ry dread disease, Calming storms, and feeding thousands With the very Bread of peace.

2 Praise the One who blessed the children With a strong, yet gentle, word; Praise the One who drove out demons With the piercing, two-edged sword. Praise the One who brings cool water To the desert s burning sand; From this Well comes living water, Quenching thirst in ev ry land. 3 Let us praise the Word Incarnate, Christ, who suffered in our place. Jesus died and rose victorious That we may know God by grace. Let us sing for joy and gladness, Seeing what our God has done; Let us praise the true Redeemer, Praise the One who makes us one. 1987 Hope Publishing Co.
