Christ, the real reason of Christmas December is not only the twelfth month of the year, but a month that is magic for many people. And it is magic because Christmas and all its spirit is around. Christmas tree, cookies, and carols, the nativity scene, family gathered together on Christmas day, the kids running on Christmas morning to open the gifts that Santa brought to them, and so on make December a very special month. However, we cannot forget the most important person in Christmas: Jesus. I have been at St. Michael s school, and I asked the kids what we celebrate on Christmas. I was happy and amazed because of the answer of the kids: We celebrate Jesus birthday. Jesus is the most important person and the real reason of this celebration. If we split the word Christmas into two parts, we get Christ Mas. Therefore, Christmas is the Mass of Christ. We recognize on Christmas the presence of Jesus Christ in our lives. We not only celebrate Jesus birthday, which is a great celebration for all of us, but also, we celebrate, through the incarnation of the only begotten Son of God, we find salvation. The gospel of Luke tells us how the angels proclaimed we should rejoice because the Savior of the World is born. The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear. The angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests. (Lk. 2:9-14) Hence, December and Christmas cannot only be a magic month, but also a month of joy because the Emmanuel is born. God-with-us through the nativity of His Son. Jesus was born in a manger, in a humble place, and Jesus life was characterized by a humble service. He donated His life to save all of us on the Cross. Pope Saint John Paul said, Christmas is a mystery of love! The love of the Father, who has sent into the world his only-begotten Son, to bestow on us the gift of his own life (cf. 1 Jn 4:8-9). The love of God-with-us, Emmanuel, who came to earth in order to die on the Cross. In the cold stable, wrapped in silence, the Virgin Mother, with prophetic intuition, already tastes the violent drama of Calvary, the traumatic struggle between darkness and light, between death and life, between hatred and love. (Pope St. John Paul II s Christmas message given at midday at St. Peter s Basilica. December 25, 2002.) Therefore, let us thank God, our Father, for sending us His Son to restore our dignity as human beings and children of God. Feliz Navidad! Fr. Introduction These two short days before Christmas remind us of God s powerful promises on the brink of fulfillment. We are not the only ones waiting and wondering what is yet to come, especially in these uneasy times. We have the perspective of history on how earlier promises bore fruit, as well as our own yearnings. Do we believe that there are promises still to be fulfilled, and if so, how do we demonstrate that? We are so close to Christmas! Hopefully, we have taken time to pray and do acts of service for each other and/or those less fortunate. God gave us His best gift, His Son, our Redeemer, Jesus, born of Mary. What gift will we give Him? Will we be more humble, as He was born in a stable? Will we bring Him joy, by bringing joy to others? Will we be His light in this world?
