Chapter 1 : Possessing the Secret of Joy - Wikipedia The theme of the book is the grounding, yet liberating, truth that joy can be chosen. It need not be elusive, though while we believe that our present unhappiness is the fault of someone or something else, it will certainly remain so. But it can be a dilemma when we try to understand the need for suffering, sickness, loneliness, or grief. Here are a few thoughts from people just like you and me, people who were deeply aware of their own deficiencies and inabilities. They discovered profound truths because they turned to God in times of trouble and He walked by their side through it all. Also included in this quotation compilation are some encouraging words from Jesus. Quotations of faith and hope in the midst of suffering Thankfulness is the secret of joy. If each drop of rain or flash of lightning makes you lose faith and doubt My love, how will you stand? Most often suffering speeds us in the direction we are already headingâ whether toward or away from God. Instead, take time to seriously consider how you will remain joyful within your own particular, unique, individual situation. Accept your circumstances as a gift from His hand. Dare to thank Him for them. You got through the worst day of your life. Remember the bad things â then look to see where you are. When we remember how difficult life used to be and how far we have come, we set up an explicit contrast in our mind, and this contrast is fertile ground for gratefulness. When life deals us the opposite, we [suppose that we] have a right not only to blame somebody or some system and to feel sorry for ourselves, but also to devote most of our time to coping, so that we have no time or energy left for serving others. Pray for a stronger back. Well, not when we feel great and confident, when it looks like wonderful things are happening, when the ministry is going well. And I speak to all of us, because we are all in the ministry. We all have an area of responsibility given to us by God. The devil is being defeated when we are feeling attacked and under the gun, when we feel weak and helpless and do not know what to do, when we are not sure how to respond, when in our perplexities and sense of weakness we come before the Lord and plead with him for strength to go on one more day, and for grace to help us stand. He brought me here; it is by His will I am in this strait place: In that I will rest. He will keep me here in His love, and give me grace in this trial to behave as His child. He will make the trial a blessing, teaching me the lessons He intends me to learn, and working in me the grace He means to bestow. In His good time He can bring me out againâ how and when He knows. The things we are going through are either making us sweeter, better, and nobler men and women, or they are making us more critical and fault-finding and more insistent on our own way. The things that happen either make us evil or they make us more saintly, depending entirely on our relationship with God and its level of intimacy. If you find yourself having a hard time finding that special place, take some time to practice going there. Get familiar with the route that takes you there, and the more you go there, the easier it becomes, and it can be a blessed way to escape when things get too intense or your spirit needs respite. Chapter 2 : SparkNotes Search Results: possessing the secret of joy Possessing the Secret of Joy is a novel by Alice Walker. Plot summary [ edit ] It tells the story of Tashi, an African woman and a minor character in Walker's earlier novel The Color Purple. In the year a survey asked, "What must you have to be happy? The same survey was taken among the same size sampling in Results showed answers. I wonder how many results there would be today? Our world is in a mad pursuit of happiness. Just go to the bookstore and look at all the books on fulfillment and finding the good life. We need to get back to the Bible, and learn how to find real joy. Most seek their fulfillment in people, places, and things. People - If only I could have a certain relationship, or be accepted by the right crowd, then I could be happy. Your life can be significant and full of joy and meaning even if you have no one apart from Christ. This is because we are complete in Christ! People change, people leave, and people die. Buying things makes me happy. Things lose their luster, and you lose the joy. The Bible says that all this material world will one day go up in flame! If I could live in that area or that house or have that job, then I could be happy. These people never find happiness in places. Do you know why? Because everywhere they go they take themselves with them! He was in a dungeon. His back was bleeding and covered in scars from 5 times being beaten with 39 lashes. He had been stoned, shipwrecked, robbed, betrayed, and was mocked and maligned by most of his world. This guy says he is rejoicing in the Lord, and I can listen to a guy like this. He has earned credibility! What characteristic does he have, that may reveal the secret to joy? Unselfishness A lack of joy and selfishness seem to go hand in hand. Self-centered people, even if they are saved, are joyless. J esus Y ou Live for Christ, serve others, and walk in joy! He said, "If one of us would get off, there would be more room for me. Just thinking of certain people evokes feelings from you. Page 2

Chapter 4 : Possessing the Secret of Joy by Alice Walker The secret of joy in the hardest of times in this book is the supremacy of the sovereignty of Christ and the supremacy of the sweetness of Christ. This video is the third of a six-part series on the theme of joy in the book of Philippians. Fishing Tourney Coming Up Saturday 1. What do you get when you cross a banker with a fish? What do monsters eat? Why do fish always know how much they weigh? Because they have their own scales. Who cleans the bottom of the ocean? Did you hear about the crab that went to the seafood disco? He pulled a muscle! Why are fish such intelligent creatures? Because they swim in schools. Men are like fish; neither would get in trouble if they kept their mouths shut. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength. How long do you believe you could smile and keep on smiling without stopping? How long could you hold a smile on your face? Do you know what the Guinness World Book of Records is? Lisa Lester, a little girl, smiled for 10 hours and 5 minutes without breaking that smile. The previous record was 7 hours and 32 minutes. And then she had to stop smiling. A smile is outward. A smile at its best can last a few hours. Do you know what the shortest verse in the Bible is? Jesus wept is the shortest verse in English, but not in Greek. Happiness depends upon what happens. But you see, God never changes. The Bible says, Rejoice in the Lord. And therefore, since he never changes, the Bible says, Rejoice evermore. Happiness is like cosmetics; Joy is like character. Happiness comes from outside circumstances; Joy comes from within. Happiness meets surface needs. Joy meets your deepest needs. Happiness is like a thermometer; It registers conditions. Joy is like a thermostat. Happiness may evaporate in times of suffering; but joy frequently intensifies in times of suffering. Joy is not dependent on happiness and may function better without when happiness is taken away. The Bible says of the Lord Jesus Isa. This is a life of tragedy and sorrow and heartache and pain and woe. Yet in sorrow, and heartache and trouble, you still can have joy. Nothing is more attractive to lost people than the joy of the Lord! A cold, dry faith has no appeal. David, a man who wrote many of the Psalms, got out of fellowship with God. When he did, he lost his joy and stopped being a soul-winner. He repented and wrote Psalm Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall be converted to You. Joy is the proof that what we have is real and is satisfying. Joy is necessary to bringing unsaved people to Jesus. Page 4

Chapter 5 : Are You A #CuriousCat? The Secrets Of Curious Cats Revealed Create With Joy The Secret of Joy did this for me. It could have been Melissa Senate's writing style, which I found as pleasing and likable as could be. It could have been the subject matter, which has a strong personal connection to me as well - - I also found out I had a sister as an adult. Places to visit in Pune 1. The temple is popular in Maharashtra and is visited by thousands of pilgrims every year. Devotees of the temple include celebrities and Chief Ministers of Maharashtra who visit during the annual ten-day Ganeshotsav festival. People are celebrating years of celebration for this Ganapati in the year The temple is a beautiful construction and boasts a rich history of over years. Jay and Vijay, the two sentinels made of marble catch the eye of all at the outset. The construction is so simple that all the proceedings in the temple along with the beautiful Ganesh idol can be seen even from outside. The Ganesh idol is 2. It is adorned with nearly 40 kilos of gold. Following the rise of the Maratha Empire, the palace became the center of Indian politics in the 18th century. The fort itself was largely destroyed in by an unexplained fire, but the surviving structures are now maintained as a tourist site. The complex had an impressive lotus-shaped fountain: It was constructed for the pleasure of the infant Peshwa Sawai Madhavrao. It was designed as a sixteen petal lotus; each petal had sixteen jets with an eighty-foot arch. It was the most complicated and intricate fountain of its time. Built in, it is one of important landmarks in Indian history. The palace was an act of charity by the Sultan who wanted to help the poor in the neighbouring areas of Pune, who were drastically hit by famine. Aga Khan Palace is a majestic building. The palace is closely linked to the Indian freedom movement as it served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, his secretary Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu. It is also the place where Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai died. This palace is also the headquarters of the Gandhi National Memorial Society. It also hosts a shop that deals in khaadi and other hand mades. Sinhagad Fort If you are in Pune and looking for a one day trip, Sinhagad fort is the best option. In this trip you may stop for a chill time at khadakwasla dam. Putting your feet in the water and letting the wind blow your stress away is a good indolence. More about sinhagad fort, it is located 25 km south-west of city of Pune. The caves and carving at Kaundinyeshwar temple suggest the fort to be more than years of age. The fort is situated on a hill of meters above sea level. This fort had been the site for many wars, they vary from the Maratha-Mughal wars to the Maratha-Anglo wars. The most famous war was that of, it was fought by Tanaji Malusare, a general of Chhatrapati Shivaji of the Maratha Empire in order to recapture the fort from the Mughals. The fort gives natural protection due to its steep slopes. The walls and gates were built only at key places. There are two gates the Pune Darwaza and the Kalyan Darwaza. Sinhagad Fort is a popular weekend destination for the residents of Pune, including trekking enthusiasts. The trek is 2. Before going to the fort or after your trek you may want to stop by the Khadakwasla dam and relax. The dam created a reservoir known as Khadakwasla Lake which is the main source of water for Pune and its suburbs. Pataleshwar Caves The Pataleshwar Cave Temple also called Panchaleshvara or Bamburde is a rock-cut cave temple, carved out in the 8th century in the Rashtrakuta period. It is located in what is now Pune, in the state of Maharashtra, India. It was originally situated outside the town, but the city limits have expanded so that it is now located on the downtown Jangli Maharaj Road. It has been declared as a protected monument by the government. The temple, made of basalt rock, is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The sanctum - a cube-shaped room about 3â 4 metres on each side - houses a linga - the symbol of Shiva and there are two smaller cells on each side. In front of the cave is a circular Nandi mandapa, its umbrella shaped canopy supported by massive square pillars. This mandapa is one of the peculiar structures of Pataleshwar. The cave is located at a lower level than the present level of the road and the cave complex. There is an exquisitely carved circular Nandi shrine in the huge courtyard of the cave. The main cave is rectangular on plan and has a pillared porch. There are three sanctums in the cave temple and the central one houses the Shivalinga. There is a circumambulation path provided in the cave where one can see the unfinished part of the cave temple. It appears that after finishing the front and the sanctum the cave was left incomplete due to some reasons, one of which could be the faults in the rock. However the walls in the main cave have some outlines drawn suggesting the sculptures depicting Page 5

stories from Indian mythology, especially involving Shiva. The huge complex of the cave has been converted into a garden and there are a few architectural members stored in it probably belonging to some old temple nearby. As this is the oldest monument in Pune, which is over years old, the Pune office of the Archaeological Survey of India is located in the adjacent property. The temple was left incomplete, possibly because of a fault line found at the back of the sanctum sanctorum, which made the further sculpting unsafe, or political upheaval resulting in loss of patronage. Still in use, the linga is anointed with ghee and yogurt. A brass temple bell hangs outside the basalt entryway. Page 6

Chapter 6 : The Seven Secrets of Joy â blog.quintoapp.com Joy is internal and abiding, and rooted deeply. Most seek their fulfillment in people, places, and things. People - If only I could have a certain relationship, or be accepted by the right crowd, then I could be happy. To check it out, click here. Physically, getting old sucks. Lessons from a Year Among the Oldest Old: Youth is all smiles and hope; old age is aches and pains while you count down the days to the end, right? They did a study at Stanford University tracking the emotions of a group of people ages Older people are happier. Older people consistently reported just as many positive emotions as the younger participants, but had fewer negative ones. In this, older brains resemble the brains of people who meditate. Elderly people are happier than younger people?!? But their bodies are falling apart! Their best years are behind them! How is this possible? A lot of what we think we know about aging is wrong. We have a lot to learn about getting older. And, more importantly, a lot to learn from older people. Author John Leland looked at the research on aging and spent a year shadowing a group of older folks to see what he could learn. His lessons are in the wonderful new book: Happiness Is a Choice You Make: Lessons from a Year Among the Oldest Old. We think of older people as set in their ways. Trying to get them to do anything new seems impossible. Old people know what makes them happy. And they do it. We have plenty of things we enjoyâ and we never seem to get around to them. Older folks definitely miss out on some new stuff. And that might seem boring. And if your goal is to be happy, then why not do what you know will work? Carstensen, founding director of the Stanford Center on Longevity. And instead of simply doing those things that make us happy, we whippersnappers spend a lot of time on defense rather than offense. There will always be pain in life. In the end, wisdom lies in finding it in the imperfect now. Spend a little less time with all that is new and shiny and a little more time with what has always made you happy. To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my bestselling book here. Express Gratitude When noted neurologist and author Oliver Sacks learned he had terminal cancer at age 82 his despair drove him to go on a three week cocaine-fueled bender that would make rockstars blush. He was filled with gratitude for the incredible life he had been lucky enough to live. I have loved and been loved; I have been given much and I have given something in return; I have read and traveled and thought and writtenâ Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and adventure. When we step back from taking things for granted and the endless parade of wants and needs we crave, appreciating what we have fills us with joy. In each study, the subjects who wrote down something they were grateful for reported greater levels of well-being and more optimism about the coming weeks or days. The more often they wrote, the stronger the effect. Depending on how the study was constructed, they reported other positive effects: All it takes is a change in perspective. You can feel it right now if you want. To learn the 4 rituals that will increase how much gratitude you feel, click here. Old age is sounding pretty good. Not necessarilyâ Find Purpose As the old saying goes: Well, let me throw in some added incentive: Patricia Boyle, a neuropsychologist at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, did an eight-year study looking at memory and purpose in life. And the stronger their purpose in life, the more protective it was. The good news, she said, is that people at any age can learn to form a purpose in life, either on their own or through simple interventions. Yours might be weak or strong, but you will benefit either way. Feed that now and reap the benefits later. To learn the seven-step morning ritual that will make you happy all day, click here. In his year following older folks, Leland never heard any of them talk about their youthful workplace accomplishments. So what is important to them that you should be focusing on now? What the older people did find joy and pride in was their families and their relationships. Make those friends now. It will also extend your life. There are a number of reasons why women live longer than men. Widowed men, on the other hand, tended to go quickly. One of the reasons old folks are happier is because they prune their social circles and get rid of the bad apples. When he started interviewing them about their lives, they described changes in their values as they got older. Those things that make you happy? Spend time with the people who have always made you happy. I just gave you valuable advice. Double down on good relationships: Build your friendship K. Invest in good relationships now. The compound interest that comes Page 7

from pals is incalculable. Turns out that how you feel about living to a ripe old age has a big effect on whether or not you actually do. Do what makes you happy. And invest in your relationships. Realize how surmountable most of the challenges you struggle with are and, like John Leland, realize just how amazing â really amazing â life is. This may be the one-sentence essence of what I learned in my year among the oldest old: Those days I am kinder, more patient, more productive, less anxious, possibly closer to being the person I always should have been. Who wants to extend misery? Do I want to live long or die long? Living long is much better. Join over, readers.
