Dear Parishioners, Name something that you have that you have not received, so St. Paul wrote to his beloved new Christians in Corinth. We are able to receive things only because we are alive; life itself is something we have received from our parents and, ultimately, from God, who created each of us uniquely in his own image and likeness. Since there is nothing good that we have (or could have) that we have not received, the only realistic and virtuous way to live and enjoy the gifts we have been given (including life) is with thanksgiving--not, mind you, an occasional perfunctory expression of thanks or thank you, but a deep-seated habitual way of appreciating life all life--and the gifts we have received and continue to receive from God. When President Abraham Lincoln issued his proclamation establishing Thanksgiving Day as a day of national observance, he did so in the midst of the Civil War, one of the darkest chapters in American history which he called in that same proclamation a war of unequalled magnitude and severity. Nevertheless, he wrote: The year that is drawing to its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. We can be thankful even in the midst of trials and difficulties. No greater blessing can come to our nation than a grateful citizenry aware that the gifts of life, liberty and happiness which are bestowed on us by God are gifts that are meant to be gratefully shared with others. Why not set aside a special time to give thanks to God by gathering with us for the celebration of the Eucharist (which, after all, means thanksgiving ) on Thanksgiving morning? Bring something from your table to be blessed perhaps something to leave for our food pantry as well and participate in the special Sacred Heart tradition of receiving and sharing an apple too. Happy Thanksgiving! Fr. John 2019 Mass Book The Mass Book for January 1 through June 30, 2019 is now open!
