Transcription:

Padre s Corner September 16, 2018 Twenty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Tecumseh lived from an uncertain date in March of 1768 through October 5, 1813. He was a warrior chief with the Shawnee Indian tribe. Born in Ohio he died on Moravian of the Thames, Upper Canada. The names of his parents were Puckshinwa and Methoataske. Tecumseh means shooting Star and Blazing Comet. The Shawnee wound up on the wrong side of history, siding with the British against America during the Revolutionary War. Negotiations for peaceful settlements never materialized, eventually leading to his violent death. Allegiances aside, Tecumseh was remembered as a competent leader with the following words attributed to him. Live your life so that the fear of death can never enter your heart... Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and in the service of your people... Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none. When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself... When it comes your time to die, be not alike those whose lives are filled with the fear of death, so that when time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home. This legendary leader died exactly 100 years before the construction of the new Saint Francis of Assis Church in 1913, though the original church was built in 1909. Jerry Colangelo represented another type of spiritual leadership, 1.5 centuries after Tecumseh. When the Phoenix Suns began play in 1968 for the National Basketball Association, Jerry was their first general manager. Born in 1939, he would later even own the Suns. In 1993, the Suns went to the finals against the Chicago Bulls. Inspired by Charles Barkley, they led game six in the final seconds hoping to force a game seven. Alas, Lady Fate would determine otherwise as a last second shot by John Paxton of the Bulls cruelly ended the Suns season. Born in Chicago of Italian descent, Jerry had quite humble beginnings working at a tuxedo rental shop after high school graduation (I worked at a hardware supply store.) He would later be instrumental in bringing other major sports teams to Arizona, including the Coyotes in hockey and the Diamondbacks in baseball. Hearing about his Christian life, I wrote to him and received his autograph years ago with a spiritual fervorino. His leadership skills pointed toward religious faith, as it did for Tecumseh. About his life focus, Colangelo reflected: In basketball, people knew where I stood. They knew that I was an outspoken Christian and what I believed in. In life you have to continually focus on what really is important and what your priorities are. The first priority in life is to have that relationship with Jesus Christ. So your faith is number one... God has a plan for my life. You know, the way I ve tried to live my life is I have this platform; it was given to me by the Lord. And He s blessed me with a lot of things. And someday I m going to be held accountable with what I did with those things. Pope Francis recently wrote a document entitled: Rejoice and Be Glad: A Call to Holiness in Today s World. One specific quote from that document went like this: You cannot grow in holiness without committing yourself, body and soul, to giving your best to this endeavor. Francis was raised in Argentina and became a Jesuit priest, witnessing many socio-economic injustices alongside his own personal health misfortunes as a youngster. He was not typecast in the typical European mode that was the hallmark in history of most of the previous popes going back to the first one Saint Peter. While I wish he would speak more about the pro-life issue for the unborn child, as his predecessors Saint John Paul II and Pope Benedict did, he has an appeal to many today who are disconnected from the world of organized religion. In the first year of his leadership as Holy Father he recalled an experience with clergy from Argentina, when he was first made a Cardinal. He was dismayed with reports that many of the priests were refusing to baptize babies of unwed mothers. He called them the modern day hypocritical Pharisees. He strongly warned those gathered that the baby must never be penalized in these scenarios, while appreciating the decisions by mothers to give life to their babies rather than the tragedy of bortion. Leadership points like this resonate deeply within me, while I become increasingly weary of those who stand in judgment of others. The irony is that those who do this often have skeletons themselves. There are ways I know this without elaborating. The power source of true leadership, including governing our own lives, is derived in the sacramental and prayerful nature of our faith. Tecumseh, Colangelo, and Francis teach us those points. Father Bill

TODAY TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Isaiah 50:5-9a Isaiah describes the willingness of the Suffering Servant to submit to the persecution of his enemies. This willingness stems from true faith in God, and the knowledge that the Lord will always be his help. Second Reading: James 2:14-18 James states that if someone is hungry and you wish them well but do not help them, you have done them no good. He compares this to stating your faith, without backing it up with your actions. He reminds us that we must show our faith through our good works. Gospel: Mark 8:27-35 Jesus taught his disciples that as the Messiah, he had to suffer much, be put to death, and rise three days later. Peter began to disagree and Jesus reprimanded him for judging by human standards rather than by God s. He told them that whoever would be willing to lose their life for the sake of Jesus and the gospel, will in fact preserve their life forever.
