Parish notes WELCOME TO ALL VISITORS! Trinity is a place where you will find open minds, open hearts and open doors. We believe that as people of God, we can all share in God's love; a love that is inclusive, ever abundant and meant to be expressed through our action in the world. We are delighted to have you with us and hope you will come back often. If you would like to learn more about life here at Trinity please: Fill out a Welcome Card Join us for coffee on the Labyrinth Plaza The Worship Bulletin you received along with this handout will be your basic guide through this morning s liturgy. Parish Notes: In the column to the right you will find the scripture readings, hymns and other music for this service. The following pages contain further information about today s worship and our upcoming meetings and events. Gluten-Free wafers are available for those who need them, just ask for them when the bread is presented to you. Prayer Ministers are available during communion at the 10am service. Proceed to the back of the church to receive prayer and laying on of hands. Open Communion: From whatever tradition you come and wherever you are in your journey of faith, you are welcome at our table. You will find simple directions on how to participate in the worship bulletin. Children & Youth: Trinity offers religious formation for ages 3½ -12 through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program. Children gather on Sundays starting at 9am in the church school behind the sanctuary. Trinity Youth Group includes all 7th- 12th graders, and meets approximately twice each month, usually on Sunday afternoons. See Parish Notes for upcoming activities. Children at Communion: Children are brought into the church during the Offertory Hymn to join us for Holy Communion. At this point, you are welcome to gather your children from the nursery to be with you. Nursery & Toddler care is available 9:15-11am. (Ask an usher for directions). Participate with us in InLight, a project that began in towns and villages of the Negev desert in Israel. This project is now spreading to communities here in the US. A group of us gathered for the first time last year and we felt the comfort of our interfaith community. SIGN UP TO DONATE ALTAR FLOWERS: Give in remembrance, celebration, in honor of or just in gratitude. Altar flowers are a wonderful way to mark an occasion. Each Sunday sign up is $60.00. The chart is on the Labyrinth Plaza after the services. The flower donations cover the cost of the flowers and if we do not have a donor, we will use an artificial arrangement. Thank you for your patience as we continue to investigate the crack in the tower on the corner of State and Micheltorena. We will continue to update you on the status of its repair during the announcements at the 8am and 10am services. our mission take note DIOCESE CONVENTION NEWS December 2-3 A delegation from Trinity returned late Saturday evening from the 121st Annual Meeting of Convention in the Diocese of Los Angeles held Friday and Saturday, December 2-3 in Ontario, CA. On the 8th ballot, the Rev. Canon John Taylor was elected 7th bishop of Los Angeles. For information on John Taylor, please click/see here: http://episcopalnews. ladiocese.org/dfc/newsdetail_2/3181451 Over the two days, convention elected candidates to diocesan offices and deputies to General Convention. We voted for complete transparency on Corp Sole, and the actions proposed by the special Committee on which Colleen Sterne served were recommended. We also voted overwhelmingly to be a sanctuary diocese. We are having conversations about what it means to be a sanctuary parish here at Trinity and will continue those conversations in partnership with other congregations and religious and civic groups. Those connected to Trinity who went to the Convention included: Christine McSpadden, Rector; Trinity delegates: Anne Porter, Elizabeth Schmid, Bill Thomas, Diana Thomas, Dick Ellison. Also attending were Colleen Sterne, James Sprague, Jerry Kahler, Michael Corrigan, (at the retired clergy table) Mark Asman, Sarah Thomas, Jane Ellison and Tom Schmid. Delegates Bill and Diana Thomas, Elizabeth Schmid, Dick Ellison and Rector, Christine McSpadden. Not pictured, because she was taking the photo, Anne Porter. As God s people, we will share the love of God in a way that nurtures body, mind and spirit. Demonstrating God s love for the world, we will serve a diverse population and accept one another without reservations. By including all people as one family in worship and service to God, we are all empowered and inspired by the Spirit to continue the work of Jesus Christ.

Since each Level of the program covers a range of ages, often several lessons are offered each Sunday, with most children taking part in only one. Today Level I will reflect on the prophet Isaiah s words about the many amazing names given to a most remarkable child, work with materials that tell the story of Mary s visit to her cousin Elizabeth following Gabriel s amazing appearance, and return to the materials that depict the birth of Jesus. Level II will work with materials for a variety of the stories around Jesus birth, comparing them and finding common themes, will work with the Good Shepherd materials to reflect on the great and beautiful diversity amongst God s people, and read and discuss the account of the angel s announcements to Joseph and Zechariah. Level III will discuss the call experiences of several Old Testament prophets. TRINITY YOUTH GROUP (7TH 12TH GRADES) Upcoming: Dec 18, Christmas Party! Oh come all ye faithful! advent & christmas ADVENT BOOKLETS BY THE REV. CHRISTINE MCSPADDEN AVAILABLE AT THE WELCOME TABLE After many months of searching for our new rector we are so pleased that our wait is over, just in time for the Advent season. As it turns out, Christine McSpadden, Trinity s new rector, has just published a brand new Advent daily reflection booklet that she titled, What AreYou Waiting For? We hope you will embark on this seasonal journey by reflecting on these daily meditations to bring a richer quality and depth to your understanding and perception of waiting as a lively and life-giving facet of faith. What AreYou Waiting For? booklets at Trinity are sold out, but can be purchased at www.forwardmovement.org. The second book recommendation is Richard Rohr s The Divine Dance: The Trinity and Your Transformation. The book will be available to purchase at the Welcome Table, and we will be drawing from the book for our Advent Series. Drawing from Scripture, theology, and the deepest insights of mystics, philosophers and sages throughout history, Fr. Rohr presents a compelling alternative to aloof and fairytale versions of God: One God, belovedly in communion, as All-Vulnerable, All-Embracing, and All-Given to you and me. The Divine Dance makes accessible and practicable the Christian tradition s most surprising gift God as Community as Friendship.. as Dance. Contact: Judith Torres, jtorres@trinitysb.org ADVENT SERIES - BIRTHING THE CHRIST WITHIN Drawing on Christine McSpadden s meditations for Advent, What AreYou Waiting For? and Richard Rohr s The Divine Dance, we will explore three themes: Connecting with our divine inheritance Experiencing God s unconditional love Accepting our mandate to be the Christ in communion with each other and all creation We will meet three Sundays immediately after church, ending by 12:30pm. Consider the possibility that We Are the Ones We ve Been Waiting For as we keep leaning into community at Trinity: December 11 - in the Parish Hall December 18 - in the church school multipurpose room Both books are available at the Welcome Table, but no reading is required! THE GIVING TREE THROUGH SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18 Christmas is the wonderful time of year when we can celebrate what God has so generously provided us, and share it with less fortunate members of our community. Every year Trinity parishioners provide colorfully wrapped Christmas gifts for residents of PATH Santa Barbara, and we know your generosity will shine again. The Trinity Giving Tree is in the Sanctuary. Simply pluck off an ornament to choose the size and gender of sweatshirt and socks you wish to give. Then, return your wrapped gift and place it under the Giving Tree. On December 18th Trinity elves will pick them up at noon and magically transport them in time to celebrate the holy birth of our Savior. MERRY CHRISTMAS! ADVENT ORGAN SERIES SUNDAYS IN ADVENT 3:30pm December 11 & 18 Explore the new liturgical year in a series of afternoon concerts illustrating the diverse tonal landscape of Trinity s 4-manual pipe organ. Trinity s Minister of Keyboard Music, Thomas Joyce will present two more distinct programs of an hour and fifteen minutes in length, each featuring a guest musician. Running the gamut of Western music history, the audience will have the chance to absorb organ literature that is very old, quite new, and composed somewhere in the middle. For the final concert, Thomas will conclude the series with the concert premiere of his own newly composed Psalm 24 for solo organ, Lift up ye heads, O ye gates. In joyful and prayerful spirits, Advent and its preparation for Christmas will be intended as a meditative journey through the sacred mysteries of the season. Suggested donation of $10 for adults/$5 for children and youth. Free chocolate Advent calendars will be available at the console following each concert for children who would like to join in listening quietly to beautiful music at Trinity! 6
