September 2015 Volume 40 Issue 7 FROM THE PASTOR 3 Dear Friends and Family of Good Samaritan, I once read of a missionary working in Brazil. One day he met a street urchin as he was walking into a place to get his coffee. The lad could not have been over six years old. Dirty face, barefoot, torn T-shirt, matted hair. He wasn t too different from the other hundred thousand or so street orphans that roamed the streets of Rio de Janeiro. The missionaries thoughts were elsewhere so he barely felt the slight tug on his shirt. When he finally did look down, there the boy stood. His eyes very white because of his grubby cheeks and coalblack hair. Pao, senhor? ( Bread sir ) Living in Brazil the missionary was used to the opportunities to buy or give a bit of food to these children. So walking into the coffee shop and told the man at the counter, a coffee for me and something tasty for my little friend here. The boy ran to the pastry counter and made his choice. Normally, these children take the food and scamper back out into the street without a word. But this little fellow surprised the missionary. As the missionary went to the other side of café bar to finish his coffee, he noticed the boy standing in the entrance to the café, on tiptoe, bread in hand, looking in at the people. What s he doing? the missionary thought. Then the boy saw him and scurried in his direction. He came and stood in front of the man. The little Brazilian orphan looked at the big American missionary and smiled a smile that stole his heart. Obrigado. (Thank you) Then, nervously scratching the back of his ankle with his big toe, he added, Muito obrigado. (Thank you very much). All of a sudden, the missionary had a craving to buy the boy the whole restaurant. But before he could do anything the boy turned away and scampered out the door. If a simple man could be so moved by a street orphan who says thank you for a piece of bread, how much more is God moved when we pause to thank him really thank him for all that we have been given. For sending his only Son to save our souls. My friends, may you enter this fall season with hearts full of gratitude for all that God has given you and continues to give you. May you be thankful for health, enough to eat, a roof over your head, and a God who loves and forgives you, each and every day. I know I am grateful for those things as well as for the opportunity to help lead such an amazing community, here at Good Samaritan. We are a healthy church, filled with giving, sharing, and loving people. We are a growing church, that is realizing its opportunity to truly make an impact in this neighborhood for God s kingdom. May we continue to be a church and a people of God who say thank you for all we have been given and who always strive to, Love God, Love People, and Make a Difference. Your Fellow Servant in Christ, Pastor Don Lorfing.

September 2015 Vo l u m e 4 0 I s s u e 7 Continue to join us as we wrap up our BACK to BASICS Sermon Series As our students return to school, they begin reviews to ensure they have a solid foundation to build on for the year. We are reminded that as Christians we need to get back to basics too. Much like students over summer vacation, we can find ourselves distracted and in need of a simple reminder of the foundations of our faith. It is when we remember those things that we are able to develop and live out that faith on a daily basis.
