* Affirmation of Faith The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Act of Praise Safe Within Your Arms Catherine Gardner, Soprano Mark Hayes PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD Children s Moments Psalm 105:1-11 Children are invited to meet Pam on the chancel steps. K-4 and K-5 children will leave for Children s Church after Children s Moments. O give thanks to the Lord, call on God s name, make known God s deeds among the peoples! Sing to the Lord, sing praises! Tell of all God s wonderful works! Glory in God s holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice! Seek the Lord and his strength; seek the Lord s presence continually! Remember the wonderful works God has done, the miracles and judgments God has uttered, O offspring of Abraham, God s servant, children of Jacob, God s chosen ones. Pam Johnston

The Lord is our God, whose judgments are in all the earth. The Lord is mindful of his everlasting covenant, of the word commanded for a thousand generations, the covenant made with Abraham, his promise sworn to Isaac, and confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant, saying, To you I will give the land of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance. * Hymn No. 733 Marching to Zion Old Testament Reading Numbers 13 (NLT) (Selected Verses) MARCHING TO ZION Freeda Chapman The Word of God for the people of God. Mulberry Street United Methodist Church July 31, 2016 Today s Sermon Once Upon a Time: Bible Stories You Need to Know Spies Explore the Promised Land Today s Scripture Numbers 13 (NLT) (Selected Verses) 1 The LORD now said to Moses, 2 Send out men to explore the land of Canaan, the land I am giving to the Israelites. Send one leader from each of the twelve ancestral tribes. 3 So Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He sent out twelve men, all tribal leaders of Israel, from their camp in the wilderness of Paran 25 After exploring the land for forty days, the men returned 26 to Moses, Aaron, and the whole community of Israel at Kadesh in the wilderness of Paran. They reported to the whole community what they had seen and showed them the fruit they had taken from the land. 27 This was their report to Moses: We entered the land you sent us to explore, and it is indeed a bountiful country a land flowing with milk and honey. Here is the kind of fruit it produces. 28 But the people living there are powerful, and their towns are large and fortified 30 But Caleb tried to quiet the people as they stood before Moses. Let s go at once to take the land, he said. We can certainly conquer it! 31 But the other men who had explored the land with him disagreed. We can t go up against them! They are stronger than we are! 32 So they spread this bad report about the land among the Israelites: The land we traveled through and explored will devour anyone who goes to live there. All the people we saw were huge. 33 We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers, and that s what they thought, too!"
