Vince Zaprzal Director of Parish Ministries, Religious Education & Facilities 630-953-4415 vzaprzal@ascensionofourlord.net Religious Education Program Updates This past Tuesday, our second graders went to the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time! What a wonderful way for these children and their families to prepare for the birth of Jesus with a clean slate. Children in grades 3-8 also went to Reconciliation. Confirmation Our eighth graders along with those from Christ the King Parish of Lombard will be Confirmed on Friday, February 22nd, here at Ascension of Our Lord. Bishop Robert Kurtz, CR, will celebrate the Mass. All Saints Day Prayer Service and Advent Gathering Look for pictures next week of our All Saints Day Prayer Service where our third and fourth graders took time to learn, dress, and speak about their Saint. Our Advent Gathering took place last week during our regular class. We started with a student led prayer service followed by our younger students learning about the birth of Jesus by watching a wonderful video together. Our 4th through 8th graders (and parents) participated in an Advent Trivia game and bible scripture contest! Classes will NOT meet on Tuesday, December 25th and January 1st. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 8th. Part 9 (Final) A Walk-through of the Mass CONCLUDING RITES Blessing and Sending Once we have received Holy Communion, there is very little for us to do before we are sent out to take the Eucharist in so many different ways out into the world. Remember, the Mass is one great Prayer. Just as we began it by marking ourselves with the cross of Christ, so now, at the conclusion of the Mass, we do the same. This time, we mark ourselves as we receive the final blessing. The final part of the Mass, the Concluding Rite, is actually the shortest part! It consists of a blessing and a dismissal a sending out. We have what we need: The Eucharist. Now we are charged to be Eucharist in every other part of our lives in our family life, in our work life, in our neighborhood life. We are sent to be the Body of Christ in the Word. You can t miss the mission that we are given! Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. Around the Diocese and Parish Neighborhood WHAT IS THIS POVERTY IN OUR MIDST? Christ taught us that poverty will always be with us. What does that mean? We know that all of us have lapses into spiritual poverty from time to time as we move through life. But Christ seems to be referring to that poverty which is a material lack of basic needs. Our religious or spiritual poverty is a battle we must every day wage to keep God in the midst of all we do. But material poverty we might not so easily experience although the latest economic research shows that over 90% of Americans will experience at least one year in their lives at or below poverty and in serious debt. We need to realize that in DuPage County today there are over 11,000 homeless individuals and families. One-third of the children in this County are already living in poverty. Adequate housing, food, basic utilities, health care, education, gainful employment, and reliable transportation are the basic materials for living and many in our own community seriously lack at least one of these. Our clergy and spiritual ministers together serve to meet our spiritual needs while our social ministries like our Society Members work to meet the material necessities of many. Above all, we cannot do this without your generosity of goods and funds. All working together and praying together will allow us to always serve this poverty in our midst. As people in this season shop for holiday gifts for family, friends or ourselves, let us keep in mind those who are in need of gifts that might change both their spiritual and material lives. Let us prepare ourselves to better serve others in this Advent preparation for both a spiritual and material rebirth. Thank You! For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me. Mt. 25:35-36,40. This Advent our parish community was given the opportunity to help those in need in the inner-city. Your response was overwhelming. Over 200 gifts were donated along with a great number of gift cards. Our 2018 response eclipsed the overwhelming response from last year! On behalf of Brother Jim, Fr. Jose and I would like to thank all of you who gave so generously. May our Father in Heaven bless you all and your families during this holy season. Deacon Peter
