My Dear Friends in Christ, Advent is the Season of New Life! How? The Church begins a new year this weekend, and does so by beginning to prepare in a direct way for the birth of the Lord of Lords, Jesus the Christ. In so many ways, despite the coming cold and wind of winter, there is new life sprouting around us. Just today (or yesterday depending on when you read this), our Second Grade students experienced the Lord s healing mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. During this season of Advent, the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be celebrated as is typical on Saturday afternoons from 3:30 4:30 pm and from 6:30-7:00 pm on Wednesday evenings. In addition, confessions will be heard from 4:00 pm 7:00 pm on Monday, December 17. At 7:00 pm, we will have a communal Penance service that will also provide opportunities for individual celebrations of the Sacrament. At the same time, our children and adult choirs continue practicing to bring the beauty and joy of song in the Spirit into our hearts. The Grade School Pageant will take place on Tuesday, December 11 at 6:30 pm and our traditional Christmas Concert will be held on Saturday, December 15 beginning at 7:30. This coming Saturday, December 8 is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation. Masses for the Immaculate Conception will be celebrated on Friday, December 7 at 5:00 pm and Saturday, December 8 at 8:30 am. Masses celebrated on Saturday evening will observe the Second Sunday of Advent and not the holy day. I would also like to draw your attention to the second collection on Saturday, December 8 and Sunday, December 9. More than any other, the National Religious Retirement Fund Collection directly benefits the needs of retired Capuchin priests and brothers who have served the church with faith and devotion for many years. If you wish to make a contribution directly to the care of elderly Capuchins, please enclose a check in a separate envelope and make it payable to the Province of Saint Mary. Family Advent Day (Sponsored by the Parish Council and the Religious Education Program) It is hard to believe that Christmas is just a month away! Unfortunately, in the hustle and bustle of getting ready for Christmas, we forget to take time to reflect on the meaning of Advent. We would like to focus our attention on the Advent preparation time and invite you and your families to the Family ADVENT Day. This Weekend! Sunday, December 2 Cafeteria Immediately following 9:45 Mass Join us for refreshments and some craft activities for the kids. Start the Advent season with a family picture in front of the Advent wreath that you can use for your Christmas cards. The High School Thanksgiving Basket Drive again delivered over 300 baskets to local parishes and needy families. The Big Kids did their jobs well, but Connor, SHHS Class of 2034, came to help Fr. Matt distribute baskets from the Parish Office. A Great Team Effort! Giving Tree Program The Giving Tree is in the Sanctuary on the St. Joseph s side of the church. This year we will once again collect TOYS for children 1-10 years of age. In order to be fair to all of the children that we serve, please follow these guidelines: Gifts should not exceed approximately $25 in value. Please do not include gift cards in the packages. If you would like to include mittens, gloves, scarf or a sweatshirt, please feel free to do so. Gifts may be returned to the Sanctuary by the tree on Saturday or Sunday. Gifts may be returned to the Parish Office Monday through Friday. All gifts should be returned by Tuesday, December 11th. Remember to attach the tag to the outside of your wrapped gift. Thank you for your continued generous support to this program
