Page 2 JOSEPHRAJ RYMOND (INDIA) ORDENAINED DEACON IN ROME O n May 2nd Josephraj Rymond, SM, of India, was ordained deacon. Bishop Matteo Zuppi, auxiliary bishop of Central Rome, and member of the San Egidio Community, presided at the celebration. Bishop Matteo Zuppi, with the new deacon, Josephraj Rymond, and the Rector of the Intl. Seminary, Fr. Pachi Canseco. INSTITUTION OF THE MINISTRIES OF LECTOR AND ACOLYTE In his homily, Bishop Zuppi highlighted the invitation theme that Josephraj had chosen for his ordination. For the invitation he selected an image of the Good Samaritan and the wounded man with Jesus words: Go and do likewise. He was glad that Joseph had chosen this phrase for his ordination, and invited him to use that phrase as an inspiration for the rest of his life. In this way, it may be an expression of his own merciful heart, like that of the Good Samaritan and like that of Jesus! It can a reminder of his call in service to others, including those who are strangers, foreigners; a call to service without boundaries! The bishop also related this text with that of Martha and Mary. The attitude of the Good Samaritan is related to that of Mary, who in choosing the better part, gives an example of one who listens to the Lord and to one another. Congratulations to Josephraj! O n Monday, May 25th, at the Eucharist which our two communities here at Via Latina 22 celebrated together, eight seminarians were instituted in the ministries of lector or acolyte. Fr. Manuel Cortés, SM, presided at the Eucharist. In his homily he responded to the question about the significance of the ministries of lector and acolyte. As he explained, the two are important steps in the process of formation for priestly ordination. In this process the seminarians must come to a deeper awareness of and live as sacraments of the presence of God. Lectors: Armando Añeses, SM (Puerto Rico-USA), Sebestian Bara, SM (India-USA), Rajmohan Chinnappan, SM (India-USA), Savio Bongkyu Choi, SM (KO) & Simplice Moluanton,SM (Congo-FR).

Page 3 The lector doesn t limit himself just to read well, but, in the person of Christ to proclaim the Word of God and incarnate it in his life, in order to transmit it to others. He is invited to a personal and profound relationship with the Word of God. The acolyte serves at the altar, and helps distribute Communion. He is invited, in the person of Christ, to live his ministry, not just in the liturgy, but in his whole life, being a person of communion. We give thanks to the Father for these, our brothers and we will accompany them in their journey of preparation to be Marianist priests. Acolytes: Mariandu Anthonysamy, SM (India- USA), Sean Downing, SM (USA) & Bernard Ombima Lugutu, SM (Eastern Africa). RECENT APPOINTMENTS FROM THE GENERAL COUNCIL egional Superior of the Region of Canada: Fr. Gérard Blais, SM, has been R appointed to a second term of three years as the Regional Superior in Canada. Fr. Gérard currently lives at the Résidence Marianiste community in Québec, and in addition to his work as Regional Superior, he is also the Director of the Centre Biblique Har'el. We are very grateful to him for accepting the call to extend this fraternal service and commend his leadership, and the welfare of all our brothers in Canada, to our prayers. e-appointment of the Vice-Rector of the Chaminade International Seminary: Bro. Lester Kaehler, SM, who coming to the end of his first term as R Vice-Rector at our International Seminary, has graciously accepted reappointment for another three-year term. Together with the Rector, Fr. Francisco Canseco, SM, Bro. Lester accompanies candidates for Marianist priesthood during their sacerdotal formation in Rome. His presence in this ministry is much appreciated by the seminarians because he brings a wealth of experience and a gentle, fraternal manner to their community. We ask God s continued blessing on his important ministry! r. David Fleming to assist at the General Administration: The General F Council and the Province of the USA are pleased to announce that, having recently completed his term as Novice Director in India, Fr. David Fleming, SM, has agreed to take up residence at the GA in Rome and assist in a number of areas, including helping the development of resources for the deepening of formation in the Marianist Charism, and providing support to the various offices of the General Administration. We are very happy to welcome Fr. David back to Rome, and are grateful for his generous response to our request for his collaboration. The General Council is also grateful to the Province of the USA for their support of both the Seminary and the GA through the mission of Bro. Les and Fr. Dave.

Page 4 MEMORIAL OF THE MADRID MARTYRES he Archdiocese of Madrid recently dedicated the church of the T Calatravas, close to the Plaza Cibeles, as a memorial church for the Archdiocesan martyrs during the religious persecution in Spain in the 1930 s. The dedication ceremony took place on the Second Sunday of Easter, or Sunday of Divine Mercy, April 12, 2015. Auxiliary Bishop Juan Antonio Martìnez Camino presided and was accompanied by Fr. Enrique Torres, S.M., former postulator general of the Society of Mary. During his homily, Bishop Martìnez Camino offered high praises for our Marianist martyrs, Fr. Miguel Léibar and the young religious Sabino Ayastuy, Joaquin Ochoa and Florencio Arnaiz. The Bishop blessed an icon representing 52 martyrs which now brings the Archdiocesan total to 402. Among the martyrs represented in this icon is Fr. Miguel Léibar. 150 TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CANONICAL APPROBATION OF THE SOCIETY OF MARY uring a papal audience on May 12, 1865, the Superior General, Fr. George Caillet, SM, accompanied D by Fr. Louis de Lagarde, SM and Brother Hipòlito Alibert, SM, received the oral approval of the Society of Mary from Blessed Pope Pius IX. The approbation was made public by a Decree of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops and Regulars on the following June 17, and the Papal Brief from Castelgandolfo dated August 11, 1865. The Brief recognized that the members of this pious Institute, besides their own sanctification, seek above all, that the Catholic Faith grows and prospers. And in order that this objective results in the solid formation of youth, they propose to dedicate themselves to teaching adolescents the precepts of Christian piety, as well as provide a civil education. Also, they profess the three simple vows of poverty, obedience and chastity, adding also a fourth vow which obliges them to persevere in the pious Institute and be submissive to the guidance of the Superior General. This year we celebrate the 150 th anniversary of this important act of Papal authority by which the young Society was recognized as true religious life in the canonical and spiritual tradition of the Church, and approved our spiritual identity in communion with the Pope, as Blessed Chaminade so greatly desired.

Page 5 NEW ARRANGMENT OF THE MARIANIST CEMETERY OF ST. HIPPOLYTE - TRANSFER OF THE REMAINS OF FATHERS CAILLET AND CHEVAUX he rearrangement of the Marianist cemetery of St. Hippolyte T was necessary due to its age, and because there was no religious of the community who could ensure the proper maintenance of the approximately 100 burial plots. At the same time it was necessary to transfer the remains of various Marianists from the cemetery of Rouvroy-les-Merles, located 120 kilometers north of Paris, in the Department of Oise, because the isolation of these places made proper maintenance very difficult. Buried In this cemetery were two of our Superior Generals, Fathers Caillet, SM, and Chevaux, SM, as well as Fathers Charles Rothéa, SM, and Louis de Lagarde, SM, second Marianist director of Collége Stanislas of Paris. In agreement with the General Administration, it was decided to transfer their graves to St. Hippolyte where three other Superior Generals were already buried. To do this work, the Marianist authorities of the Province of France made contact with a company in Colmar. The job entailed dismantling the graves, constructing the vaults, erecting a granite memorial with the names of the 300 religious who are buried in this cemetery, rearranging the central crypt that would hold the remains of the Superior Generals.these are some of the steps of this project entrusted to the leadership of the St. Hippolyte community. Buried in the central crypt are now five Superiors General, as well as Fathers Charles Rothéa, Louis de Lagarde and Joseph Schellhorn, novice master for many years. Superiors General Buried here: P. Georges CAILLET, 1790 1874, 2 nd Superior General P. Jean CHEVAUX. 1796 1875, 3 rd Superior General P. Joseph SIMLER, 1833 1905, 4th Superior General P. Joseph HISS, 1846 1922, 5 th Superior General P. Paul HOFFER, 1906 1976, 9 th Superior General Buried In the same crypt are: P. Charles ROTHEA, 1791 1868 Fr. Eddie during the blessing of the new Marianist cemetery. P. Louis de LAGARDE, 1833 1884, P. Joseph SCHELLHORN, 1869 1935. On May 12-14, 2015, during a meeting of the Provincial Council in St. Hippolyte, Fr. Eddie Alexandre, surrounded by his counselors and members of the St. Hippolyte community, blessed the renovated cemetery and the memorial stone with the names of the 300 Marianists who rest in God s peace. The name of each religious buried there was read, hymns sung, prayers offered, and to end the celebration they sang First Vespers of the Ascension in the Chapel of the Holy Cross that is alongside the cemetery.
