Providing Support and Leadership for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Volume 47 Number 1 SCRC SPIRIT Southern California Renewal Communities January / February 2019 Suffering with the Heart of Mary by Michelle Moran In my years of service at ICCRS, during visits to Rome, I was blessed to be able to visit St. Peter s Basilica on many occasions. One of my first prayer places in the Basilica is just inside the entrance on the right where there is the famous sculpture, the Pietà by Michelangelo. The sculpture is carved from a single slab of marble and depicts Mary cradling Jesus body after it had been taken down from the cross. It is difficult to imagine that when Mary, the young woman from Galilee, gave her fiat, her total yes to the Lord at the Annunciation, she had this scenario in mind. Yet as she committed herself wholeheartedly, impeded by no sin, to God s saving will, she devoted herself totally as a handmaid of the Lord, to the person and work of her son, under and with him serving the mystery of redemption, by the grace of Almighty God. Therefore the Fathers of the Church see Mary not merely as passively engaged by God, but as freely cooperating in the work of man s salvation through faith and obedience. This union of the Mother with the Son in the work of salvation is made manifest from the time of Christ s virginal conception up to his death (Lumen Gentium 56). Throughout the Gospels we see Mary advancing in her pilgrimage of faith. Simeon gave her the prophecy: You see this child: he is destined for the fall and for the rising of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected and a sword will pierce your own soul too so Heart of Mary continued on page 4

Fruitfulness for the Current World by David Bustamante It is not difficult to realize that the current world is engaged in a rather complicated situation: on one hand we have wars, on the other political instability, at the front we see religious persecution and behind, intolerance. In the book of Galatians, St. Paul clearly distinguishes the fruits of the flesh and the fruits of the Spirit. The current society, both its rulers and the governed, manifest hatred, violence, ambition, divisions, envy, etc., which clearly are fruits of the flesh and are strongly condemned by the Scriptures to the point of sentencing that those who do such things they will not inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. Faced with this reality, this culture of death, there is an urgent need to provide the world with an answer that can reverse the situation. The Catholic Charismatic Renewal, which emerged more than fifty years ago, is still a great renewing force of people, communities and societies, which are constantly being anointed by the Holy Spirit, who empowers the chosen ones with precious gifts so that they can serve humanity in search of its true freedom and sanctification. That is why all of us who have been baptized in the Holy Spirit must give to the world the fruits of Christian maturity, fruits of the Holy Spirit. It is necessary to fill the world with love, joy, peace, patience, understanding, kindness and faithfulness. Our Lord tells us clearly that in order to bear abundant fruit, we must remain in Him and He in us, because without Him we can do nothing (John 15: 5). This is the main requirement of the Charismatic Renewal to be fruitful: to remain in the Lord. Those who have been baptized in the Holy Spirit must remain in the Lord through constant prayer, participation in the sacraments and intense community life. Only in this way, can they become agents of change in society at all levels, influencing individuals, families, politicians and society as a whole. If the prayer groups and communities remain faithful to the Lord, they will be appreciated by all of society, which will turn to them in search of those spiritual fruits that they lack, and that they long to achieve, to counteract the evil that is produced within. It cannot be denied that the Lord has greatly blessed the Charismatic Renewal throughout the world, even in an unsuspected way, filling it with beautiful gifts. But it is the Charismatic Renewal that must regain strength because it has not yet been achieved enough impact on society in order to produce its transformation. We must emphasize the conversion of individuals and families. It is through them that we can reach those corners where there has not yet been a change and which are usually the most difficult to convert. At the Vigil of Pentecost 2017, Pope Francis prophetically asked us to lift our eyes to see the fields ready for the harvest, with abundant fruit, but if we are obedient, we will see greater things. That is why we must be obedient to the Lord, not only because of a desire to see greater things, but as an imperative need. Society urgently needs agents of change that can lead it back to the path that God seeks for it. We must reinforce the call of Pope Francis to share the experience of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the whole Church and to carry out Seminars of Life in the Spirit in places where they are usually not done in order to continue expanding this current of grace among those who have not yet responded to the Lord s call and who will surely be the future witnesses of God s Love and producers of spiritual fruits for today s world. Fruitful Reflection by Deacon Christof Hemberger I live in an area where a lot of fruit is grown. Everywhere in the area, there are plantations with apples, cherries and many other kinds. Over the last few weeks, these trees were in full bloom. It was wonderful to drive through the countryside and enjoy nature blossoming in all its glory. And this reminded me that there is a harvest to look forward to in summer and autumn! We should, however, bear one thing in mind a tree that is to bear fruit needs to be nurtured and maintained. It needs a caring hand to look after it, fertilize it, free it from pests and regularly prune it so Heart of Mary continued from cover page that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare (Lk 2:34-35). It is difficult to imagine that she knew the extent to which her own heart would be pierced. Yet she persevered in her union that it can bring abundant fruit. Our Christian life is quite similar. We have accumulated experiences over the years, we have learnt and lived a lot. Much has grown during this time. But not everything that has grown fosters our growth and maturity and may well need healing, adjustment or pruning. This is a process we like to ignore but which is essential for our growth as disciples of Jesus! The Christian life is the same as nature: fruit will grow where the Master Gardener is invited in: where he is permitted to put his fingers into wounds, to stabilize a crooked branch or cut with her Son unto the cross. Any other mother would be unable to endure such a horrific scene; they would be collapsed on the floor, distraught, possibly hysterical. But Mary stood at the foot of the cross in keeping with the divine plan, enduring with her son the intensity of his suffering. She associated herself with his sacrifice in her mother s heart. Mary brings us face to face with the love in the heart of Jesus crucified. Sometimes in our hardness of heart we can stand at the foot of the cross and not feel moved. Thankfully, the one who has a sinless, perfect, immaculate heart will help us. She will give us her compassionate heart; she ll even let us live in her heart if only we will give her ours. St. Mother Teresa, in her prayer of consecration to Mary, focuses on the exchange of hearts. We give Mary our hearts and she off a shoot that has grown too quickly. The reward of this type of life will be great. Those who are willing to take their place in the garden of the Lord wherever the gardener is planting them, those who are willing to align their lives to the instructions of the Lord and humbly allow the Lord to prune them in regular intervals will grow and flourish, their roots will be watered by the living water and they will bear abundant fruit into old age (see Ps. 1 and Ps. 92). Deacon Christof Hemberger, from Germany, is Vice-President of the ICCRS Council. Reprinted from the Jul-Sep 2018 ICCRS Newsletter iccrs.org gives us her Immaculate Heart. On those occasions when I have prayed before the Pietà in St. Peter s, gazing on the sorrowful mother tenderly cradling the body of her son, I have prayed for all mothers and all those in deep sorrow. I have also prayed, as Mother Teresa often did, Mary lend me your heart. This is, of course, a symbol of a deeper spiritual reality. The heart refers to the inner life, the seat of the Holy Spirit. So, my prayer is an invocation to our Blessed Mother that she may lend us her heart, that we may be filled more fully with the Holy Spirit, and that our hardened hearts would burn with love for Jesus. May Our Lady of Sorrows help set our hearts on fire with love for him. Michelle Moran is the former President of ICCRS. Reprinted from the Mar-Apr 2018 ICCRS Newsletter. iccrs.org
