Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church Founded 1879 The Centennial of the Appearances of Our Lady at Fatima 13 August 2017

We are pleased to welcome His Excellency the Most Reverend Salvatore J. Cordileone Archbishop of San Francisco to Saint Joseph the Worker Church The readings for this evening are from the Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time. The musical propers are taken from the Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary. -2-

Prelude To Welcome the Archbishop: Motet: Ecce Sacerdos Magnus Sir Edward Elgar (1837-1924) Ecce sacerdos magnus, qui in diebus suis placuit Deo, et inventus est justus. Behold a great priest, who in his days pleased God, and was found righteous. (Ecclesiasticus 44: 16-17) Entrance Procession -3-

Introit: Salve Sancta Parens Graduale Romanum Salve sancta Parens, enixa puerpera Regem, qui caelum terramque regit in saecula saeculorum, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. Eructavit cor meum verbum bonum: dico ego opera mea regi. Hail holy Mother, the Child-Bearer who has brought forth the King, who rules heaven and earth forever, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. My heart overflows with a goodly theme; I address my works to the Lord. (Sedulius; Psalm 44/45: 2, 11, 12) Kyrie eleison Gloria in excelsis (Sung by the Choir) Missa Dixit Maria Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) Collect Liturgy of the Word First Reading I Kings 19: 9a, 11-13a At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the LORD said to him, "Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by." A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire; but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave. -4-

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 85: 9, 10, 11-12, 13-14 I will hear what God proclaims; the LORD for he proclaims peace. Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him, glory dwelling in our land. R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. The LORD himself will give his benefits; our land shall yield its increase. Justice shall walk before him, and prepare the way of his steps. R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. Second Reading Romans 9: 1-5 Brothers and sisters: I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen. Lector: The word of the Lord. Response: Thanks be to God. -5-

Alleluia I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for his word. (Cf. Psalm 130: 5) Holy Gospel Matthew 14: 22-33 Priest: The Lord be with you. Response: And with your spirit. Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Response: Glory to you, O Lord. After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. "It is a ghost," they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid." Peter said to him in reply, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." He said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, "Truly, you are the Son of God." Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. Response: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Homily -6-

Profession of Faith The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, [bow] and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayer of the Faithful Lector: Let us pray to the Lord. Response: Lord, hear our prayer. -7-

Liturgy of the Eucharist Offertorium: Ave Maria Graduale Romanum Ave Maria gratia plena, Dominus tecum: benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui. Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. -8-

Motet: Ave Maria Jacobus Gallus (1550-1591) Sanctus Missa XVIII Mysterium Fidei Amen Our Father Pax Domini -9-

Agnus Dei (Sung by the Choir) Missa Dixit Maria Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) Communion Procession Communio: Gloriosa dicta sunt with Magnificat Graduale Romanum Gloriosa dicta sunt de te, Maria: quia fecit tibi magna qui potens est. Glorious things are said of thee, O Mary, for He who is mighty has done great things for you. (Psalm 86/87: 3 & Luke 1: 49) 1. Magnificat anima mea Dominum: et exsultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutary meo. My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. 2. Quia respexit humilitatem ancillae suae. Ecce enim ex hoc beatam me dicent omnes generationes. Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid: for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 3. Et misericordia eius a progenie in progenies timentibus eum. And his mercy is from generation to generation to them that fear him. 4. Fecit potentiam in brachio suo: dispersity superbos in mente cordis sui. He has shown might in his arm: he has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. 5. Deposuit potentes de sede et exultavit humiles. He has put down the mighty from their seat, and has exalted the humble. 6. Esurientes implevit bonis: et divites dimisit inanes. He has filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he has sent empty away. 7. Suscepit Israel puerum suum, recordatus misericordiae suae: He has received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy: 8. sicut locutus est ad patres nostros, Abraham et semini eius in saecula. as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever. (Luke 1: 44-56) Motet: Dixit Maria Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) Dixit Maria ad Angelum: Ecce ancilla Domini, fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum. Mary said to the angel, Behold the handmaid of the Lord: be it done to me according to your word. (Luke 1: 38) -10-

Anthem to the Blessed Virgin Mary Pontifical Blessing -11-

Dismissal Deacon: Ite missa est. Response: Deo gratias. Go, the mass is ended. Thanks be to God. The Saint Michael Prayer Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits, who prowl throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Priest: Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, All: Have mercy on us.
