N e w s l e t t e r o f t h e : Saint Alphonsa Fraternity Q u e e n o f P e a c e R e g i o n S e c u l a r F r a n c i s c a n O r d e r December 2018 Volum e 13, Issue 12 Minister s Message: Come Lord Jesus, Come Who can forget that first Nativity scene at Greccio? The people gather around and at once are transported to Bethlehem. A baby is quietly lying in a manger. Joseph and Mary ponder the miracle God has divinely wrought through them. The promise of God is fulfilled through this wondrous babe. It would not remain peaceful for long as Herod would be looking for him and, in the process, kill many innocent children. Mary and Joseph flee to Egypt with him to avoid this tragedy. They spend 3 years there before returning to Nazareth. Joseph would return to his work as a carpenter in order to provide for them. I invite you into the workshop to see this godly man at work. Perhaps Jesus stood at his feet watching him. We do not know much about Joseph. The bible tells us that he was of the lineage of David and a just man. In fact, that does say a lot about him. (Mt. 1:19-20) I was curious about Saint Joseph so I did a little research about him and found some useful information about Joseph the man. He is a direct descendant of David. He was obedient and entrusted with the lives of Jesus and Mary. He would have been responsible for the spiritual training of Jesus as he faithfully kept the laws of Judaism. The angel addressed him as Joseph, Son of David indicating the role he is to play in God s plan. The words that follow that salutation are: Do not be afraid, which is used many times in the bible. This is an affirmation used to show that this was of God and divinely inspired. Joseph needed to know that he was chosen by God for this mission. He would need courage and grace to carry it out. Some scholars believe he was a young man about the same age of Mary. There is much speculation about the time of his death. I looked inward and thought about my life and invite you to do the same. I recall a time when I was in second grade. We had a classroom play about the birth of Jesus. I so wanted to be chosen to be Mary or the angel. But no, I was told to be the Inn keeper who would tell them that There is no room for you here. I was so sad. After all, who wants to tell them that? I have thought about that many times and have made sure that now I always have room for Jesus, Mary and Joseph in my heart. I invite each of you to do the same. Come Lord Jesus, Come. Wishing all of you a Blessed Advent and Christmas, Teresa
