Dirt was hauled in by Barney Weirsma for the berm, pavers and edging bricks have been laid, plants, bushes and trees have been planted, and mulch has been scattered. Dedicated members have accomplished these tasks, but this work could not come to fruition without monetary contributions. We have been blessed with numerous donations this month. Ice Cream Social planned for Sunday, July 13 The Readlyn Historical Society is sponsoring its 12th annual ice cream social at the museum on Sunday, July 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Ice cream sundaes will be just 25 cents! Everyone is welcome to come for an evening of visiting and a chance to tour the museum. Any newcomers in Readlyn are especially invited for an opportunity to get acquainted. Lavern Thurm donated a red maple in memory of his wife, Lavonne; this tree has been planted at the ball park. Lois Ganske also provided a sizable monetary donation. The Peters family has given a substantial amount of money to complete the memorial for Joyce Peters at the Welcome Garden. Also, Herb and Jackie have given a generous amount of money to further make our city beautiful. They wanted to Garden Club members Pat Wehr, Nancy Kohagen, Gene Thurm, thank the community they "adopted" for supporting their efforts while Herb was mayor as well as during their major remodeling of the Center Inn. This support continued through family tragedies and losses and during Herb's last months. Without the support of the community, they felt they would not have been successful in any endeavor. Page 2 Readlyn Chronicle Wednesday, June 25, 2014 Wapsie Valley FFA is number one in the state By Alana Platte, Reporter The Wapsie Valley FFA chapter was named the number one chapter in the state of Iowa out of a total of 219 other chapters at the State FFA Convention in Ames. This is the first time in Wapsie Valley FFA history that they have received this award. Along with this honor, the local chapter received awards for Community Development, Public Relations, Community Involvement, and their overall rating as a chapter. The Wapsie Valley FFA chapter will be advancing to Nationals to determine their position as a chapter among the nation. Along with receiving numerous awards they also had one of their very own receive an exciting title. Abrah Meyer, a 2013 graduate of Wapsie, went from being the 2013-2014 FFA State Secretary to the Iowa FFA State President. On April 28 and 29, she was responsible for organizing and running the convention with the help of the other officers. The Wapsie Valley FFA Chapter embarked on its adventure of a lifetime to Ames on Sunday, April 27, for the State FFA Convention. Forty-five members and four chaperones attended this event. The members participated in several different activities throughout the course of two days. Wednesday, June 25, 2014 Readlyn Chronicle Page 3 Miss Readlyn Comments By Madison Matthias Grump s Grumblings By Garylee Thurm Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9) Throughout all of the crazy, amazing, sad, bittersweet, exciting, and scary changes that have happened this past year, and are going to happen, I look to Joshua chapter 1 verse 9 for comfort. It is a great reminder for me that I need not to be scared or fearful because God will always be with me. What a heart-warming thought to keep in the back of my head, especially as I go off to college come August. If I had to choose one word to sum up this past month, it would be BUSY! I love being busy because it does not give me much time to be bored; however, time just goes so fast when you are always on the go. I have been working a lot of hours at the pool in Fairbank, as well as Bagge s Strawberry Patch in Independence. I have also been doing my college volleyball workouts which include a lot of running and lifting weights, which is right up my alley. Aside from all the working and exercising, I still find time to do fun stuff with my family and friends! It is crazy to think that a year has already come and gone, and my time as Miss Readlyn has ended (even though I will always have my sash and crown ;)). It has truly been a great honor to serve my community this past year. I am so thankful for all of the opportunities that were placed before me. This experience has done so much for me, and I will be forever thankful! Even though it was hard to give up my reign, I am so happy for Miss Ally Klein to be taking over Congrats, girl! There is not a doubt in my mind that she will fill my shoes, and make them even bigger to fill for the next year. I hope you enjoy it. I hope everyone had as great a year as I had. I know it s been a strange year as far as the weather goes. I don't expect this to be long, but I've said that before. The jig business has been good. I'm down to 40 dozen on order and feel I'm pretty much caught up, but from now on it will slow down. I'm not able to get much saw dust made. If I get special orders, I push them ahead if I have a date to meet. Yes, Mary Lou, yours is coming up. I did get a special order for a wedding cross that will be going to Denmark in August. Yesterday at the celebration, I got a call from a lady that needs a birth cross converted to a baptism cross. That one I will need to get at. Today (Sunday) I got a call from the Welcome Center at Nashua wondering when I would be getting more product to them. That will be taken care of later next week. Bonnie is trying to downsize her flower garden as she hauled several batches to the Waverly plant sale. Since then a neighbor wanted to get rid of a couple of hostas. So much for downsizing. I was able to make a trip to Cabela s and got lucky. What I wanted had to be taken out of the warehouse and they were on markdown. That made them less money than a Wal-Mart product and better quality. Bonnie has gotten started on a new furniture project which is a new bed and yes, it s oak. All I need to do is assist when needed and answer questions. I've also been able to work in some chainsawing. Someone in town wanted four trees down. It was easier than one would think as they took care of the brush and also helped me load. Everything was done in two days. That's fast work for an old grump. I was lucky as I only hit one nail, you never know what you'll hit with those yard trees. I received an email from someone in Ohio asking me to duplicate a jig that he can no longer buy. He says by email the he sent it June 4, but I haven't received it. I may try to work him up something. He did email me a picture, but you can't really tell colors from a picture...much better in hand. I don't know if any of you gardeners have experienced this or not, but Bonnie wanted to get rid of one of her well-established ornamental grasses which was about 18" across. That's about like trying to dig an oak with a spoon. I started with a shovel and the handle started creaking, so I knew that wasn't going to work. I've got the equipment, so we grabbed the sawzall. It s just a matter of sticking the blade in the dirt and start cutting chunks. The shovel could then handle the job. I had a busy grump weekend. It started Friday morning with the grump candidate interview. It was held at Inspired with 99.3 KWAY FM and sponsored by KAPLAN University. It was a live interview. When I was on, I used my better judgement to watch what I said. I was telling my daughter about it and she said she wouldn't want to put me on live interview because of what I might say. My daughter also has a new name for her mother. It is queen grump. I like it. Friday night it was fireworks and I believe it s the best we've had as it seemed to be more colorful. Saturday was the parade and when you're in it, you don't get to see the floats. Congratulations to the Zion St. Matthew s float on first place. It looked like the turtle races were well attended and they ended up with plenty of turtles. I saw in the crowd that someone had one of those two wheel stand-up scooters or whatever the proper name for them is. I asked him how long it takes to learn to drive one. He told me to try it and I did. He told me where to place my feet and off I went. I was able to run it on the grass. I could see fun written all over it. Something else to add to the list. I've done that. You turn it with the vertical post, side to side to turn. It operates like a joystick. I passed on the Saturday night band as it was not my type and way too loud. I had a nice visit with one of the guys at the gate and our conversation turned to hunting and he told me not to forget to call as he would take me pheasant hunting and that he had plenty of places to hunt. Thanks. The Sunday morning worship was well-attended. A bigger crowd than Barefoot Becky had expected and they ran out of song sheets. This is the first polka worship service I've attended and I won't hesitate to go again if I have the chance. A big thank you to everyone helping to carry the planks. We started after worship and everything was pretty much torn down and put back by 12:30 PM. That must almost be a record. A lot can be done in a short time with lots of help. Tomorrow back to physical work as I have a little chainsaw work. It doesn't matter how old you are, hard work won't hurt. Just work smart. Congratulations to Ally Klein, our new Miss Readlyn. Of course, I must also congratulate my Grump successor, Jean Buenzow, too. I made sure to pass her the official envelope with a list of grump duties, so there won t be any slack time. I'm sorry to see my term end as I think I enjoyed my term more than any of the previous grumps could have. Page 4 Readlyn Chronicle Wednesday, June 25, 2014 Mary Lou and Don Billhorn Don Billhorns note 50th anniversary Don and Mary Lou Billhorn will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, June 29, with an open house at Zion Lutheran Church in Readlyn from 2-5 PM. Don Billhorn and Mary Lou Arneson were married at the United Methodist Church in Caledonia, MN on June 27, 1964. Mr. Billhorn is a retired livestock buyer and Mrs. Billhorn is a retired Wapsie Valley teacher. They have two daughters, Carolyn Lewis and husband, Allen, from Eldridge and Jennifer Kastli and husband, Sean, from West Des Moines. They have six grandchildren. No gifts are required. Auxiliary meets The Ladies Auxiliary to the Wayne Teisinger V.F.W. Post #5661 met June 10, 2014, at the library meeting room with six members present. The meeting opened with prayer and the pledge of allegiance. The secretary and treasurer s reports were read and accepted. Bills were approved. General orders and chairman reports were read. There was a report on Memorial Day. All enjoyed seeing the names and flags on the wall of 58 veterans who died. A very good potluck was enjoyed. There was a report on the float that the men are making for Grump Days. The Auxiliary received the District year-end report booklet. Delegate for National Convention is Darlene Peters and alternate is Marrillee Tiedt. Auxiliary dues are due. Motion to adjourn was made by Darlene Peters and seconded by Luann Happel. Luther senior Brianna Niebuhr of Fairbank, daughter of Kristi and Bruce Niebuhr, graduated with the class of 2014. She majored in psychology. Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin gave the commencement address, and was granted an honorary degree at the ceremony. Upper Iowa University Spring Dean s List FAYETTE, IA -- Upper Iowa University has named its 2013-14 Dean s List. Kleitsch graduates from Allen College Spencer Kleitsch of Readlyn received a Master of Science in Nursing degree from Allen College. The College awarded 141 degrees at its commencement ceremony on Friday, May 9 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Allen College conferred 17 Associate of Science in Radiography degrees, eight Bachelor of Health Sciences degrees, 67 Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees and 49 Master of Science of Nursing degrees. The speaker for Allen College s spring commencement was Acacia Bamberg Salatti. Acacia is the acting director the Center for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Allen College offers degrees in radiography, health sciences, and nursing. Just over 600 students enrolled at the College this spring. Information on Allen College is available at www.allencollege.edu. 5th graders tour Readlyn Historical Museum On May 28, Mr. Anderson and his fifth grade students from Readlyn Elementary toured the Readlyn Historical Museum. They were interested in seeing and hearing about the many items of Readlyn s history. Some of the students had fun looking through the pictures of the Readlyn High School graduates to see if they could find their great-grandparents. We hope they enjoyed their visit as much as we enjoyed having them. College News Wartburg Winter/May Term Dean's List WAVERLY, IA (readmedia)-- Wartburg College has recognized 505 students who made the 2014 Winter/May Term Dean's List. Danielle Gordon of Fairbank was on the Dean s List. The list cites students who earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above in at least five course credits during the two terms. Four of the five course credits must be graded with a traditional letter grade. Wartburg students take four courses during Winter Term, which runs from January to April, and one course during the one-month May Term. May Term courses often involve travel and study abroad. HCC Spring Dean s List WATERLOO--Hawkeye Community College announces the Dean s List for their Spring Semester. Memorial Day services held The Wayne Teisinger V.F.W. Post #5661 conduced a service at 9 AM at St. Matthew s Cemetery on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26. At 10:30 AM, 13 Post and 10 Auxiliary members marched form Main St. to Readlyn Elementary School along with Boy and Girl Scouts and the Wapsie Valley School Band. During the program, the names and flags flashed on the wall of the 58 veterans who have died, which are on the Avenue of Flags in the Readlyn City Park. The program included the National Anthem by the band, Pledge of Allegiance, welcome by Commander Charles Albrecht, prayer by Rev. Matthew Moss, reading Deck of Cards, by Verdeen Pavalec, Memorial Day address by Rev. Moss, Armed Forces Medley by the band, and veterans stood up during their song. Mock grave services were held outside with readings and placing a wreath of red, white and blue carnations and a flag on the grave. The members marched back to Main St. with a potluck following at the library, with about 45 people attending. During the week of June 9th-13th, Immanuel and St. Paul s churches hosted Vacation Bible School. Sixty-five children enjoyed a fun filled week of singing songs, playing games, eating snacks, storytelling and meeting new friends! It was a splashing good time! We are so grateful that we got to share His amazing grace with this great group of kids through VBS! We couldn t have done it without a great group of volunteers and donations. We got to share the message that God gives us amazing grace; He saves us from sin through His Son Jesus, our Savior, and gives us eternal life! We encourage you to share that good news with everyone! (Mark 10:17) It s the age-old question. Our natural response is by doing a lot of good deeds; By being kind to other people, etc. The man who ran up to Jesus was thinking along these lines. But, Jesus knew that this man loved his possessions more than He loved God. And so, Jesus tells him to sell all his possessions precisely because He knew that he would refuse. Jesus wants to show the man that he is incapable of earning eternal life. If he were capable, he would have gladly given up all his possessions right then and there and followed the Christ. But, his sinful pride and rotten heart won t allow him to. The man was far too in love with his own works. He looked to himself to determine his standing before God. Because of this, the man went away sorrowful because he finally saw that he could not earn his salvation. It hurts us to know that we are incapable of doing something. Our pride wants us to believe that we are powerful, competent, and well equipped to carry out any task. But God s Word is very clear: All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). After the man went away sorrowful, the disciples were astonished and asked, then who can be saved? Jesus answered, With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God" (Mark 10:26-27). Therefore, rather than asking, How do I get into heaven, we ought to ask, How does God get me into heaven since I cannot get there myself? Jesus doesn t say that He died only for His disciples, or only for the church, or only for those who repent and believe in Him. He died for all. All includes you. No matter how unforgivable you may perceive your sins to be, Jesus paid for them all in full. All means all. And yet, not all people will enter eternal life. Why? Because they were worse sinners than you? Hardly. Because they trusted in their own works instead of in the work of Christ their savior. That is the only unforgivable sin (Mark 3:29). The truth is, the only reason that God favors you at all is because His Son Jesus lived the perfect life that you failed to live and paid for your sins with His own blood. He only sees the righteousness of His Son. Therefore, Jesus eternal life is made your eternal life. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ (Romans 10:17). Page 10 Readlyn Chronicle Wednesday, June 25, 2014 Wapsie Valley FFA participates in horse judging event By Kassidy Kuhlmann, Chapter Reporter Members of the Wapsie Valley FFA Chapter brought their knowledge and used it to judge horses in Iowa Falls, on May 22 at the district horse judging event. Juniors Marina Hilbert and Jacob Watts, and freshman Dayten Wittenburg departed from the school after the final bell and spent the night showcasing their abilities. The trio judged halter as well as performance classes. They took a quiz on horse feeding and health, and also went before judges and explained their reasoning for classifying them in such a way. They competed against 16 other teams from surrounding chapters. The team placed 8th overall and were happy with the outcome. Marina said, I love the experience I get when I go to this event. I felt more prepared for the competition this year than last year. I can t wait for next year already! The members who took part in this late night had experience working with horses. COLT as a one-stopshop for Wapsie FFA By Kassidy Kuhlmann, Chapter Reporter Excitement, sharing, and laughter. This was the theme on June 4 as the Wapsie Valley FFA Officers attended Chapter Officer Leadership Training, or COLT for short, at Hawkeye Community College! Alana Platte, Jarod Bodensteiner, Taylor Waldstein, Ally Klein, Kassidy Kuhlmann, Emily Martins, and top merit winner, Baylee Kleitsch all attended and had a great time as they learned about their duties and met other officers from across the Northeast District. The District and State Officers conducted the day without a glitch. President, Alana Platte, was a workshop leader due to her Southwest Sub-District Vice President position as was State President and Wapsie Valley member, Abrah Meyer. The officers attended workshops that catered to the duties of their perspective teams as they gained insight into the roles that fellow officers play in their position at the different chapters. In order to accomplish this, they played games and did activities. They also got the opportunity to attend workshops for different ways to make their chapters better in some way. Workshops focused on how to stay connected to the members through social media, time management, and being involved in their chapter. The day was filled with laughs, memories, friendships, and a growing passion for being a leader! Treasurer Ally Klein stated, COLT taught me that we are all different individuals with diverse personalities. While most FFA members were at home, all snug in their bed, the members of the Wapsie Valley chapter were running around, playing games, laughing, and finding the ghosts that are alleged to be lurking in the halls. The night started off at 8 PM in the ag room where they engaged in constant chatter, pizza, and getting hyped up on sugary drinks! From there they moved to the gym and tried to get their energy levels down, which did not ultimately happen. The members camped out on the gym floor around 4 AM and tried to fight off the night creatures. Soon to be junior, Jarod Bodensteiner says, It was really fun aside from the fact that I slept on the floor with no blanket and shared a pillow with a fellow member, but everything else was a lot of fun! There is never dull moment with this group! Some braved the floor while others slept on the tables or bleachers, hoping to be out of harm s way. Wednesday, June 25, 2014 Readlyn Chronicle Page 11 Wapsie Valley FFA assists in Farm Safety Day By Kassidy Kuhlman, Chapter Reporter On May 8 and 21, members from the Wapsie Valley FFA went to Heartland Acres in Independence to assist in the Farm Safety Day program. The Buchanan County Extension invited Wapsie Valley, East Buchanan, Jesup, and Independence chapters to come and assist in any way needed. Throughout the two days, more than 200 2nd graders from surrounding public schools as well as the 3rd-8th grade Amish children from the Jesup and Wapsie Valley schools attended. The kids came with teachers, parents, and helpers to be exposed to danger not only on farms, but in a number of different situations! The program offered safety concerns in: electrical, hazards found around the farm, feed and grain safety, sun safety, and equipment safety, just to name a few. The kids got to escape the classroom for a day, but not entirely! They got the privilege to sit in on a one-room school house and experience what school was like decades ago. Sophomore Annette Kleitsch says, It was really cool to see all the 2nd graders there getting excited about safety and wanting to learn more about how to be safe on farms. All in all, the two days were both rewarding and educational for all involved. Farm Safety Day 1- The 2nd graders were exposed to potential hazards around the farm by Wapsie Valley FFA members. During the course of the presentation the kids tried to identify all the hazards they could spot on the farm. The Independence ambulance staff gave kids some safety tips along with giving them a tour of the vehicle they handle tough situations in. The East Buchanan FFA chapter gave a presentation about sun safety and made color changing bracelets with the students.
