MARCH 2004 C E L E B R A T I N G I M A G I N A T I V E J U D A I S M www.neveshalom.org UPCOMING EVENTS AT NEVE Wednesdays, March 3 thru April 21 -- St. Louis Writers Workshop The St. Louis Writers Workshop meets at Neve Shalom from 7 to 9 P.M. every Wednesday from March 3 through April 21. Check out www.stlww.com for more details. Saturday, March 20 -- Archaeology and the Bible On Saturday morning, March 20, at 9:30 A.M., the Religious School will have a special session on archaeology and the Bible. This enjoyable and informative session will be led by Seattlebased writer Marian Broida. Mr. Broida has published two award-winning books (Ancient Israelites and their Neighbors, selected as a 2003 Sydney Taylor Honor Book by the Association of Jewish Libraries, and Ancient Egyptians and their Neighbors, selected in 1999 by The Smithsonian Magazine as a "Notable Book for Children" ) that combine the archaeology of ancient Israel and its neighbors with hands-on crafts that elders and youngsters alike can enjoy. The whole congregation and interested friends are also invited to attend. Come and hear how the study of how these peoples' lives enriches our understanding of the Bible, and be the first one on your block to have made a Philistine headdress. Message from the Co-Presidents St. Louis has had a long, cold, difficult winter, and we know that all of you are happily looking forward to spring. And, as we all know, in spring a young man's/woman's fancy turns to fundraising. Well, maybe not so many of you, but unfortunately, as co-presidents of Neve, we seem to spend a great amount of time thinking about fundraising. And this month, we have a new and exciting idea for you! We are going to be selling things on ebay! We can't claim this as an original concept since The Jewish Light reported how successful this has been for another St. Louis congregation, but we're not above stealing great ideas. We all have some small item or items around our house that we no longer need but that someone else may collect or want (that old "one person's trash is another person's treasure" syndrome). So find that vase, that statuette from Kenya, your old baseball card collection, an old music box, your aunt's antique pill box, old kitchen clock or whatever and have it do some good. 100% of what the item is auctioned for will go to Neve, and the donor can take it as a tax deduction. We are reserving a storeroom at Neve to hold the stuff until sold. If you can't easily drop your item or items off, please call Harriet Ross at (314) 994-9399 and she will pick it up or make arrangements to do so. Since we will need to mail out these items to their new owners, please take size into consideration when choosing your donations. We will also need any background information on your items which could enhance their value or interest to potential buyers (such as its age and origin, the material that it is made out of, etc.) which will be used in the description we post on ebay. In addition to items to be auctioned, we need computer-literate people who would be interested in facilitating the auctions. We have some experienced folks who can teach the rest of us how to set up an auction, so you do not need to actually have experience in auctioning items on ebay; you just need to be willing to spend some time at your computer to help us. In order to remain a healthy congregation, we need funds, and this can be an exciting and fun way to raise them. We are trying hard to raise sufficient funds so there will be no need for a dues increase just to make ends meet. If we can collect enough via our programs, we will be fine, but we need everyone to help by contributing something of value to the ebay effort. In another bit of exciting news, the Neve cookbooks have arrived. This is another way to help raise funds for Neve, so find out how to get lots of copies for yourself, your family and your friends check for all the details elsewhere in this newsletter. Thanking you all in advance, Monte and Elaine - 2 - EDITOR'S COLUMN UPDATE I am pleased to announce that I have finally narrowed down the field of potential topics for a column to two candidates... either (A) my observations on transliteration, or (B) Jewish leap years. (I'm serious.) As we go to press for this issue of the newsletter, I haven't committed anything to paper yet...but I have some good ideas floating around in my head. (To those of you who may think I am just procrastinating, we can discuss that later.) Norm

Yes, it s the moment we all have been waiting for, the Neve Food Fest Cookbook has arrived from the printer, just in time for Passover. It's full of delicious recipes to spice up the holiday or at least to make dining over the eight days a lot more interesting. As for the rest of the year, there are over 300 recipes to tempt your palate. Hors d'oeuvres, salads, soups, main dishes and desserts - they're all there. And not only will you get the secrets of wonderful meals, you get to help with the dreaded chore of fundraising for Neve.
