Welcome to the - a congregation of the Church of Scotland International Presbytery ********************** Minister: Rev. Derek G. Lawson Email: DLawson@churchofscotland.org.uk Phone: 010 412 5709 or 06 3059 9641 ******************** Thought for the Week In Flanders fields the poppies blow between the crosses, row on row, that mark our place: and in the sky the larks, still bravely singing, fly, scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, loved and were loved, and now we lie, in Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: to you from failing hands we throw the torch: be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders fields. John McCrae **************************** Order of Service for Sunday 12 November 2017 Remembrance Sunday

Call to Worship: (congregational lines in bold) Come to offer God your worship and praise, but also to remember those who have lived and died in armed conflicts or on peace-keeping duties - as they sought to serve others. We will confess with shame those occasions when nations have lightly chosen war rather than peace. We will pray for all who still suffer as a result of war and we will commit ourselves to work with all our strength to see peace and justice established throughout the world. Welcome and Prayer of Approach Praise: Make me a channel of your peace (MP 456) 1 Make me a channel of Your peace. Where there is hatred let me bring Your love; where there is injury, Your pardon, Lord; and where there s doubt, true faith in You. O Master, grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved, as to love with all my soul. 2 Make me a channel of Your peace. Where there s despair in life let me bring hope; where there is darkness, only light; and where there s sadness, ever joy. O Master... 3 Make me a channel of Your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, in giving of ourselves that we receive;

and in dying that we re born to eternal life. Children s Message Praise: I ve got peace like a river (MP 353) I ve got peace like a river, peace like a river, I ve got peace like a river in my soul; I ve got peace like a river, peace like a river, I ve got peace like a river in my soul. Prayer of Confession - ending with The Lord s Prayer Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. Sorrow for the Wrongs of the Past (this may come before or after the Act of Remembrance) When the 1 st candle is extinguished, say: Forgive us; our lamps are faint. When the 2 nd candle is extinguished, please say: Forgive us; our lamps are fading. When the 3 rd candle is extinguished, please say: Forgive us; our light is running out.

Act of Remembrance - including The Last Post (Bugler) The Lament Two minutes silence Reveille (Piper) (Bugler) Praise: Longing for light, we wait in darkness (CH4 543) Verse 1 Longing for light, we wait in darkness. Longing for truth, we turn to you. Make us your own, your holy people, light for the world to see. Refrain Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness. Christ, be our light! Shine in your church gathered today. Verse 2 Longing for peace, our world is troubled. Longing for hope, many despair. Your word alone has pow r to save us. Make us your living voice. Refrain Verse 3 Longing for food, many are hungry. Longing for water, many still thirst. Make us your bread, broken for others, shared until all are fed.

Refrain Verse 4 Longing for shelter, many are homeless. Longing for warmth, many are cold. Make us your building, sheltering others, walls made of living stone. Refrain Verse 5 Many the gifts, many the people, many the hearts that yearn to belong. Let us be servants to one another, making your kingdom come. Refrain Blessing on the Children Anthem: Lacrymosa dies illa (in those days there will be tears). (Choir) Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thou-sand winds that blow, I am the soft-ly fall-ing snow. I am the gen-tle show'rs of rain Lacrymosa dies illa, Lacrymosa dies illa, I am the fields of ripe-ning grain. I am in the morn-ing hush, I am in the grace-ful rush of far-off birds in cir-cling flight I am the star-shine of the night.

Lacrymosa dies illa, Lacrymosa dies illa, I am in ev-'ry flower that blooms I am in still and emp-ty rooms I am the child that yearns to sing: I am in each love-ly thing. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. Lacrymosa dies illa, Readings: Revelation 22: 1 5 (p. 1250) 1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. Matthew 5: 38-48 (p. 970) Eye for Eye 38 You have heard that it was said, Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.

40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. Love for Enemies 43 You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Praise: For the healing of the nations (CH4 706) (Tune: Rhuddlan) 1 For the healing of the nations, Lord, we pray with one accord, for a just and equal sharing of the things that earth affords. To a life of love in action help us rise and pledge our word. 2 Lead us forward into freedom, from despair your world release, that, redeemed from war and hatred, all may come and go in peace.

Show us how through care and goodness fear will die and hope increase. 3 All that kills abundant living, let it from the earth be banned: pride of status, race or schooling, dogmas that obscure your plan. In our common quest for justice may we hallow life's brief span. 4 You, Creator God, have written your great name on humankind; for our growing in your likeness bring the life of Christ to mind; that by our response and service earth its destiny may find. Thoughts for Today Affirmation of Faith We believe in God, who made the sun and the sky, the stars and the sea, who calls us to live responsibly. We believe in Jesus Christ, who became human, who healed the sick, who talked to children, who made friends with sinners. He burned brightly and offended many. His journey was one of life and death and resurrection. His light continues to shine in darkness.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, who inspires the scriptures and whose breath we breathe. We believe that God calls us to be a community committed to one another, offering a welcome to everyone, old and young, rich and poor, strong and weak. We believe that God calls us to be peacemakers, workers for justice, brothers and sisters, a light for our world. Amen. Offering & Prayer of Dedication Church News Prayers for Others - Elder Praise: I have a dream, a man once said (CH4 710) I have a dream, a man once said, where all is perfect peace; where men and women, black and white, stand hand in hand, and all unite in freedom and in love.

But in this world of bitter strife the dream can often fade; reality seems dark as night, we catch but glimpses of the light Christ sheds on humankind. Fierce persecution, war, and hate are raging everywhere; God calls us now to pay the price through struggles and through sacrifice of standing for the right. So dream the dreams and sing the songs, but never be content: for thoughts and words don t ease the pain: unless there s action, all is vain; faith proves itself in deeds. Lord, give us vision, make us strong, help us to do your will; don t let us rest until we see your love throughout humanity uniting us in peace.
