- First FEPPD Symposium (06-07.05.2011) The first FEPPD Symposium was held in the afternoon of the 6 th and 7 th of May 2011. During this Symposium, speakers from all over Europe came to present different issues concerning the Dental Technicians in Europe. On the first day, Mirjana Zagoricnik, Secretary General of FEPPD, presented the results of the questionnaire concerning Education for Dental Technicians. From this presentation, we can result that the level of Education in Europe is very different as well as the number of schools, bachelor degrees and master degrees. To stress the differences in the different European countries, we invited Dean France Sevsek from Slovenia and Prof. Libusa Radkova, PHD, from Slovakia to present the system of Education for Dental Technicians in their country. On Friday the 6 th of May 2011, Ludger Fischer was also a key-note speaker who presented the future of European SME s in a Global Economy. Ludger Fischer is responsible for UEAPME s Meditech Forum. On the second day of the Symposium, our Vice President, Hana Dohalova presented the evolution of the dental technician by standardization. She discussed the importance of standards for dental technicians. After the break, Mr. Rudolf Müller, former dental laboratory owner, opened the second part with a presentation on How to deal with low prices. To explain this matter, he used the comparison between Austria and Hungary. Mr. Patrick Wille from the VAT-House closed the meeting with a presentation on VAT in Europe for Dental technicians. He explained the current situation of taxation and the difference in VAT within Europe. This difference is a big issue because it can lead to distortion of competition. The Symposium was sponsored by BREDENT, VITA, DENTAURUM AND DIGITAL VITAMIN. FEPPD thanks all sponsors for making this unique and successful event possible. Ron Gilman from Digital Vitamin offered us a series of pictures and a movie of this event. The pictures and the movie will soon be available on the FEPPD Website. IV COLUMN BY TORSTEIN WREMER, TREASURER OF FEPPD Dear all, I would like to thank you all for voting for me to be the treasurer of FEPPD for the next two years. It was nice seeing everyone again. There were also some new people present and I hope there will be more countries present in the coming years. Like every year, there were many fine representatives of our profession from the different countries. I think that there was a positive atmosphere during the meeting in Venice and I believe we must continue like this. Now that we are home and have evaluated what happened, we discover that dentist and dental technicians are the same across Europe. It seems that dental technicians pretty much have the same problems, which threatens our profession. We must work hard to achieve political goals that will ensure our future. This is also in the patient s best interests. As the elected treasurer, it is my responsibility to ensure that the money paid by member countries is used in accordance with the statutes and in everyone s best interests. We may need to consider the possibility of changing our rules in the statutes so that we can agree on using one language. This will save FEPPD a lot of work and a lot of money that can be used for political work. I look forward to working with the new Board and the Office and I am sure that FEPPD will grow and become stronger in the future. I also look forward to seeing you all in Nice, France, next year. Do the best you can in the meantime. Best regards Torstein Wremer An expert is a man who tells you a simple thing in a confused way, in such a fashion as to make you think the confusion is your own fault -TW- 6
