Page 3 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish May 6, 2018 Why We Honor Mary and our mothers Bishop Michael Francis Burbridge, Diocese of Arlington Perhaps you are often asked by our brothers and sisters in other faith traditions: Why do Catholics worship Mary? Of course, we explain that we only worship God. Yet, we honor Mary as the perfect model of holiness and as the first of the disciples. What a perfect month to reflect on the questions: Why do we honor Mary? Why is Mary at the heart of our spiritual lives? Our Catechism answers those questions by stressing the role of Mary in salvation history: In God s divine and mysterious plan, she was conceived without sin; was chosen to be the Mother of God and was assumed into heaven body and soul and is our Mother and the Mother of the Church. Here is a beautiful summary: This motherhood of Mary in the order of grace continues uninterruptedly from the consent which she loyally gave at the Annunciation, and which she sustained without wavering beneath the cross, until the eternal fulfillment of all the elect. Taken up to heaven, she did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation... Therefore the Blessed Virgin is invoked in the Church under the titles of Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and Mediatrix (# 969). This month dedicated to Mary is also a time we give thanks to God for our own mothers, living and deceased. We thank them for the many ways their sacrificial love and faithful witness have inspired us. Our Holy Father Pope Francis offered a beautiful reflection on the vocation of motherhood here on earth and how that precious gift leads us to a deeper understanding of Mary, our heavenly Mother. Pope Francis says that A mother helps her children grow up and wants them to be strong, capable of accepting responsibilities, of engaging in life and of striving for great ideals. In the family of Nazareth, Jesus grew and became strong, filled with wisdom, and the favor of God was upon Him (Luke 2:40). Our Blessed Mother helps us to be strong in faith. Consistent physical exercise helps us to build strong muscles. Spiritually, we exercise by repeating daily Mary s yes to God s holy will, not our own. The more and more we do so, especially in the midst of temptations to seek a life without discipline and obedience, the stronger we become in faith and, thus, experience the favor of God. In addition, Pope Francis says: A mother teaches her children to face the difficulties of life and to confront them with courage. Mary saw many difficult moments in life, from the very beginning when there was no room in the inn for the Holy Family, up until the very end where she wept at the foot of the cross. Through it all, Mary was not overcome by fear or despair. She persevered and remained courageous. Mary knows our struggles and difficulties, and from the Cross Jesus assures us that His Mother will be our mother, who will accompany us through our sufferings and show us the path leading to His glory. Be sure to carry the rosary as a constant reminder of this powerful truth! We thank our dear mothers, whom we celebrate in a special way this month, for the many ways, in imitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, they help us to be strong in faith and courageous in the midst of the trials of life. Throughout this month and always, we turn to Mary the Mother of God, the Mother of the Church and our Mother, for her protection, guidance and help, so that we too may always say yes to the Lord and His will and find favor with God.

Page 4 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish May 6, 2018 From the Our Lady of Lourdes Department of Religious Education Registration for the 2018-19 school year is now open. Registration forms have been mailed home. Please return ASAP. Early bird discounted tuition is in effect until May 31. ****** Our program couldn t exist without the help of many dedicated volunteers. For the 201819 school year, we need: Catechists (religion teachers) in the Wednesday 5:45pm and 7:15pm sessions. On-call substitute teachers, special education teachers, and clerical office helpers. Guest speakers to share their faith experience, or to present any relevant topic, to groups of parents and/or groups of students. If any of our parishioners have suggestions for special activities or projects to enhance the faith journey of the children and/or the families in our program, please let us know! ****** On April 21, our First Communion Candidates participated in a 3-hour retreat to prepare for receiving the Sacrament. The retreat began with a Brother Francis video entitled The Bread of Life in which the candidates learned that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist and it is truly His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. This was followed by a re-enactment of The Last Supper, with the students playing the roles of Jesus and His Apostles. The proper procedure for receiving the Eucharist both in the hand and on the tongue was practiced with unconsecrated hosts. The retreat concluded with the students praying The Living Rosary. Some of our Level 2 students brought in Lenten Offerings totaling $96, which will be donated to our parish outreach.

You are asked to spiritually adopt one unknown baby and pray that this child be carried to term and experience the fullness of life as God intended. Daily prayer: "Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion. (Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen) HOPE AND HEALING AFTER ABORTION: The Sisters of Life host monthly Days of Prayer & Healing, Gatherings, and Hope & Healing Weekend Retreats. They include witnesses of mercy, Scripture sharing, personal prayer, opportunity for Sacramental Confession, and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Call 866-575-0075 or email: hopeandhealing@sistersoflife.org VISIBILITY MATTERS: Weekly prayerful presence at Planned Parenthood, Massapequa - Saturdays 10:30am-12pm, 35 Carmans Rd, Massapequa (across from the mall parking lot). For info: 516-541-8056. ALFIE EVANS, the British toddler whose parents were fighting to have him transferred to a hospital in Italy, died less than a week after having life support withdrawn. The Italian government granted Alfie citizenship in the hope that he could be transferred. The British Court of Appeal UK told the staff at Alder Hey Hospital to move the child to palliative care and withdraw life support. Shortly before the boy passed away, his father, Tom Evans thanked all their supporters who have dedicated their time and support to our incredible flight We would now ask you to return back to your everyday lives and allow myself, Kate and Alder Hey to form a relationship, build a bridge and walk across it. Tara Isabella Burton at Vox News wrote, Ultimately, however, the Evans case is about who gets to decide what the best interest of a child really is. When the view of the state and the view of a child s parents are at odds, who gets to have the final say? The answer ties into wider questions about medical ethics and what it means for a life to be not worth living, and about popular trust, or lack thereof, in the UK s National Health Service, a paradigmatic example of both the pros and cons of socialized medicine. WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION STATISTICS: The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that between 40 to 56 million abortions are performed every year. That s 153,425 per day, 6, 393 per hour, or 107 per minute. These children are not statistics - they are human beings, like you and me, only smaller! DEFUND PLANNED PARENTHOOD: US Representatives Chris Smith (NJ), Diane Black (TN), Ron Estes (KS), and Vicky Hartzler (MO), and 149 of their colleagues recently sent a letter to Alex Azar, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, requesting that the department move swiftly to issue new regulations for the Title X Family Planning Program. Noting the ways that existing Title X regulations have blurred the lines between abortion and family planning, the letter calls for revised regulations that will require federally-funded Title X service sites to be physically and financially separate from facilities that provide abortion, and to eliminate the federal mandate requiring Title X providers to refer for abortions. Planned Parenthood receives an average of almost $60 million per year from the Title X program. Planned Parenthood is the nation s largest abortion provider and performed over 320,000 abortions in the US in 2016. Planned Parenthood is responsible for over 7 million abortions in the US since 1973. Abortion is not family planning. A companion letter was signed by 41 US Senators.
